Adding a project from GitHub used to replace useful lookup guidance with a generic repository-operation error. The web palette now shows the safe message inline; mobile uses the same formatter in its existing error banner. Editing the repository input clears the error, and late lookup results cannot replace a newer query or flow.

The server forwards only five exact GitHub guidance strings and maps a typed signed-out GitHub CLI error to fixed sign-in guidance. It keeps the existing typed Bitbucket locator guidance. Other provider details stay masked in the displayed message. The shared formatter prefers the typed repository detail, with ordinary error-message and default fallbacks. No lookup, contract, or configuration behavior changes.

Maintainer takeover of #18453, with credit to @spadaval for the original fix and reproduction. Contributor commits are retained; current main was merged into the original branch. The rebuild removes an unused formatter export and redundant invalidation calls, using the palette’s current navigation patterns. Pending lookup progress is announced politely to screen readers.

Validation:

  • Two existing regression suites: 38 → 37 tests (service 19 → 18, shared project logic 19 → 19). Coverage combines safe guidance, exact-match masking, provider isolation, signed-out CLI guidance without host/account details, preserved causes, and formatter fallbacks. Temporarily reverting the original fixes produced two expected failures; the signed-out regression also failed before its five-line fix.
  • 104 tests pass across six focused files, including existing web palette, source-control client, and mobile project logic suites.
  • Server, client-runtime, web, and mobile workspace typechecks pass. Targeted lint and formatting pass; one unchanged lint warning. Export checking found no unused exports in changed files (untouched mobile exports are outside the CI export scope).
  • Independent Opus and Sol whole-PR reviews: three rounds, both clean on the final revision. Round one identified the signed-out CLI guidance gap; the existing regression case was extended before the five-line server fix. A later CodeRabbit finding added a polite status announcement for pending lookups; real-client DOM verification confirms pending status, error alerts, and silent ordinary prompts.
  • Actual Linux web client against both current main and the rebuilt head, same 1280×800 viewport and missing repository: generic toast before, actionable inline alert after. Real GitHub lookup failed, editing cleared the alert, and retrying octocat/Hello-World reached destination selection without cloning anything. Editing during a pending successful lookup and submitting a missing repository kept the newer input/error in place.

Before — current main:

Before: generic repository lookup toast

After — rebuilt head:

After: actionable inline repository lookup error

Failed lookup, edit, and successful retry

Current review gate: CI jobs pass and all review threads are resolved. Macroscope’s Approvability check is NEUTRAL, requiring human approval for the authentication and sensitive-data handling. This gate remains open; the PR is unmerged.

Verification limits: macOS, Windows, Electron desktop, iOS, Android, and a second remote device were not run here. Mobile behavior was checked through its focused logic suite, typecheck, and code review; the original author’s native recordings predate this rebuild. Authentication and rate-limit guidance are covered by the fixed-string policy and existing provider tests, not by changing real credentials or exhausting GitHub quota.

Models and harness: Codex gpt-6-astra for tests, Codex gpt-6.1-sol for implementation, and Claude claude-opus-5-5 plus Codex gpt-6-sol for independent review, through T3 Code.

Add Project GitHub lookup still requires an exact owner/repo match and
replaces provider failures with a generic toast. Keep lookup exact, but
surface allowlisted GitHub details and show them in the palette (and
mobile banner) instead of a top-right toast.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This change updates production web, mobile, and server behavior and adds explicit handling for authentication failures and potentially credential-bearing repository diagnostics. The scope is focused and tested, but the authentication and sensitive-data implications require human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Repository lookup errors now expose approved provider details. A shared client helper selects an error message. The mobile screen and web command palette display lookup errors and invalidate stale lookups.

Changes: Repository lookup errors

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select safe provider error details
apps/server/src/sourceControl/SourceControlRepositoryService.ts, apps/server/src/sourceControl/SourceControlRepositoryService.test.ts
The service retains approved Bitbucket and GitHub details, including GitHub sign-in guidance. Other provider details use a generic message. Tests cover provider causes, metadata, redaction, and expected details.
Format repository error messages
packages/client-runtime/src/operations/projects.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/operations/projects.test.ts
The shared helper returns a non-empty repository error detail, an ordinary error message, or a fallback. Tests cover these cases.
Display errors and invalidate stale lookups
apps/mobile/src/features/projects/AddProjectScreen.tsx, apps/web/src/components/CommandPalette.tsx, apps/web/src/components/CommandPaletteResults.tsx
The mobile screen and web command palette use the shared formatter and ignore or invalidate stale lookups. The palette displays lookup failures in an error empty state.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 4faf4

Changing environments cannot replace the new flow with an earlier lookup result through the inspected UI path. The change is ready for normal merge checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c1d6b

The inspected changes restrict displayed provider guidance and reject obsolete lookup results without changing repository permissions or lookup contracts. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Close-and-reopen behavior remains incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed exposure is provider-guidance presentation to existing repository-service callers and local add-project lookup state. No new endpoint, credential source, tenant scope, or clone authority is introduced by the inspected diff. The shared server mapper gives the guidance policy broader operation coverage than the two changed lookup displays.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The new GitHub guidance branches return only exact approved strings or fixed signed-out text, not interpolated provider detail, host, or account values. Regression assertions cover appended credential-like text, another provider using the same guidance, and signed-out causes containing private host/account values. Web renders the resulting message as React text rather than HTML.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Lookup success does not itself perform cloning. Subsequent clone submission retains the selected environment and remote URL and rechecks source-control-write and orchestration-operate scopes. The PR does not remove these checks or change the clone inputs.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The ordinary Error.message fallback is retained from the previous client helpers, not introduced as a new raw-provider-detail channel. Its transport-origin contents were not fully traced, so the shared formatter should not be described as a general-purpose error sanitizer.

The lookup-error fix has focused tests, but the PR explicitly lacks before/after screenshots for its web and mobile UI changes. Please add those images and a short recording showing a failed lookup, editing the input, and retrying, as required by the verification guide. The browser failure explains the gap; it doesn't demonstrate the changed UI.

Typing or leaving the GitHub lookup step kept the in-flight generation
valid, so a miss could still paint after the user had moved on.
Invalidate that generation and reset pending state when the query or
flow changes, on web and mobile.

The web and mobile recordings now demonstrate the requested fail → edit → retry interactions. To clarify the before/after screenshot requirement, “before” means the UI before this code change. Please add a pre-fix screenshot of the generic lookup error on web and mobile alongside the post-fix images already supplied. No further recording is needed.

Invalidate the pending lookup when handling an add-project open intent.

OpenAddProject can update an already-open palette. The multi-environment branch then changes the view without invalidating the lookup. If the lookup resolves afterward, its unchanged generation allows it to set the flow to the old repository confirmation step.

@juliusmarminge thanks for clarifying. The PR description now has before and after shots for both web and mobile, where "before" is main @ d45d1a1 from before the code change, and all of them use the same lookup, octocat/this-repo-does-not-exist-t3-lookup. They're under "Screenshots and recordings" in the description.

Taking over this one as maintainer for batch misc-01. I’ll preserve the safe lookup messages and inline error behavior, adapt it to current main, reduce tests to the useful cases, and run independent reviews plus current web proof before pushing here. Thanks @spadaval for the fix and the original evidence.
