Problem

T3 Code can't run Vercel's fx coding agent. fx ships an Agent Client Protocol server, fx acp, but Settings > Providers > Add provider has no fx entry.

This rebuilds #16962, which was closed because an older model (grok 4.6) wrote it. The design is unchanged. Newer models wrote the code fresh on current main, and a second model reviewed it before this PR opened.

Change

Adds packages/provider-fx, a thin flavor on the shared ACP adapter shaped like provider-grok, following adding a provider. The shared ACP runtime and packages/effect-acp don't change.

  • Registration: the driver lists, BUILT_IN_DRIVER_ORDER, a model-manifest.json compatibility entry with updatedAt bumped, the default model in contracts, the web and mobile client registries, settings search terms, and the knip:check workspace list.
  • fx is off by default. The health check runs fx --version, fx status --json, and fx models --json, and opens no ACP session.
  • Runtime modes are Supervised (fx ask) and Auto (fx code on 0.0.13, auto after Match ACP session modes to the CLI's permission modes vercel-labs/fx#1189). Full access and Auto-accept edits aren't offered, because fx enforces neither. The flavor writes the mode on every session start and load, because fx 0.0.13 reports ask on a new session while it enforces its saved default until a client writes the mode. An unknown mode id fails before anything is sent.
  • fx lists its backend option provider before model, so the flavor writes config id model only. "Default" resolves to fx's reported model. Effort writes Medium when a thread has none.
  • The $ and / menus list skills from fx's documented skill folders.
  • Steering is interrupt-and-restart, plan mode is hidden, and text generation is unsupported, because every fx acp session is saved under ~/.fx and ACP can't delete one. Rollback uses the shared ACP path, which starts a fresh fx session.
  • Tests: a recorder modeled on the Grok recorder, and fixtures recorded from fx 0.0.13 for simple, multi_turn, queued_turn, turn_interrupt, message_steering, the Supervised approve and decline cases, and an early Stop. The shared harness gains three general options: a fixture-level runtimeMode, the flavor's cancelBehavior in the ACP replay runtime, and an optional release label on the interrupt step.
  • User docs (providers-fx.md, the install table, permission modes, and the docs index) and the marketing harness tile.

Tradeoffs:

  • All fx instances on a machine share its fx login, because fx keeps credentials under HOME.
  • fx after fix: use system claude binary in packaged Electron app #1189 saves a mode written over ACP as its default permission mode, so a thread's mode also becomes fx's terminal default. The guide says so. A session-only mode belongs in fx.

Scope and approval

Direction and scope were approved in #16556. @juliusmarminge reviewed #16962 against the provider checklist (review). This rebuild covers each change he requested:

  1. Auto-accept edits is gone.
  2. A recorder and the shared fixtures fx supports. provider_thread_resume is still missing. The ACP replay harness drives one agent process and the recorder refuses a second, the same limit Grok and the ACP Registry have.
  3. A gated early-Stop replay that runs fx's own cancelBehavior: "wait-for-prompt". It fails if the cancel is dropped.
  4. fx is in BUILT_IN_DRIVER_ORDER, and the manifest updatedAt is bumped.

Out of scope: usage-limit classification, active mid-turn steering, plan mode, choosing the fx backend, commit and title generation, and the usage page.

Verification

  • On this head, based on main at 18656a3402, which merges cleanly with main at 2625327090:
    • packages/provider-fx tests: 44 passed.
    • From apps/server: FxAdapterV2.test.ts, ProviderRegistry, providerCompatibility, ModelManifest, providerStatusCache, and both OrchestratorReplayFixtures files: 244 passed.
    • packages/contracts settings.test.ts: 160 passed.
    • Typecheck passes for t3, @t3tools/provider-fx, contracts, web, mobile, and marketing. vp fmt --check, vp lint, vp run knip:check, and vp i --frozen-lockfile pass.
  • The recorded fixtures contain no home paths, usernames, emails, tokens, or host names.
  • Desktop app built from this branch, fresh state, fx 0.0.13 signed in:
    • Add provider shows the fx tile, and the card reads "Authenticated · fx login".
    • The mode menu offers Supervised and Auto. Effort defaults to Medium. "Default" resolves to fx's default model. $ listed all 57 skills on disk.
    • A Supervised file write showed fx's approval. After Decline, the file didn't exist.
    • After "Edit from here" rolled the thread back, fx ran in a new session, and a file write there still asked first.
    • Stop ended a long turn within a second, and a follow-up ran on the same fx session.
  • Before, Add provider has no fx entry. After:

Add provider with the fx tile

fx instance signed in

fx composer with Supervised and Auto

fx Supervised file approval

  • Not checked: the mobile UI (typecheck only), and fx main in the desktop app, because its mode writes would change the tester's fx defaults. Mode resolution for fx main is unit-tested.

Built with the fx coding agent. Implementation by spacexai/grok-4.7 (xhigh effort). Review by anthropic/claude-opus-5.5 (xhigh effort), in two rounds.

fx (https://fx.sh) ships an ACP server, `fx acp`. This adds `packages/provider-fx`, a thin flavor on the shared ACP adapter shaped like provider-grok, and registers it on the server, contracts, web, and mobile.

fx is off by default and offers Supervised and Auto. The flavor writes the mode on every session start and load, because fx 0.0.13 reports `ask` on a new session while it enforces its saved default until a client writes the mode.
Covers install, sign-in, the two modes, Effort, `$` skills, the machine-wide fx login, and that fx after vercel-labs/fx#1189 saves a mode written over ACP as its default.
Adds a recorder modeled on the Grok recorder and fixtures recorded from fx 0.0.13: simple, multi_turn, queued_turn, turn_interrupt, message_steering, the Supervised approve and decline cases, and an early Stop recorded as one live session.

The shared harness gains three general options: a fixture-level runtimeMode, the flavor cancelBehavior in the ACP replay runtime, and an optional release label on the interrupt step.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f6b31

The fx provider is off by default and reported as tested. The only visible defect is the marketing page grid, which places the fx card alone on a second row. This can be merged after a small cosmetic follow-up.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f6b31

FX adds another coding agent operating with the server account’s environment and credentials. It is disabled by default, and approval controls are explicitly configured. No introduced security bypass was established, but enforcement across policy changes and recovery, and deployment-level credential isolation, remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The executable and agent boundary is the server process account and resources available through its environment and credentials, not merely one provider-instance record. Cross-user, tenant or environment exposure cannot be bounded further without deployment and credential-isolation evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Provider-instance settings mutations require providers:manage. Configured executable selection remains privileged administration rather than a demonstrated unauthenticated execution path.
  • observed — FX permission requests are mediated by the shared consumer: allow selects an approval option, deny selects a decline option or cancellation, and ask creates a pending approval. These controls govern requests received from FX; they do not independently prove that FX requests permission before every sensitive operation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The FX wrapper captures native session identity on start, load, resume and fork. Mode application rejects unsupported identifiers before writing and explicitly writes matching reported modes to address the documented saved-default mismatch.
  • observed — The unchanged direct ACP turn path does not include the full runtime policy in its configuration-refresh predicate. However, production thread-loading identity includes that policy, and normal turn startup passes it into resumeThread. This counterevidence prevents treating the direct-path observation alone as an established FX authorization bypass.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate effective FX permissions when tightening Auto to Supervised in a reused session, including interruption and recovery. An explicit native-policy refresh invariant before execution would reduce dependence on higher-level loading behavior.
  • proposed — Use isolated recording credentials and inspect normalized transcripts before committing them. The recorder retains the operator’s real login and performs targeted substitutions; those substitutions are not a general guarantee that arbitrary captured secrets are removed.

Build the error message from bounded attributes only.

FxUnknownModeError.message puts requested into the message without changes. requested comes from runtime policy or plan-restore input. The guideline requires a message that is fixed or built from bounded attributes. Use a fixed message and keep requested as a structured field. Do the same for the errorMessage that acpModeError builds at Line 256.

As per coding guidelines: "Attributes and log annotations stay bounded… The message is fixed or built from those attributes."

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the harness grid layout for the seventh card.

.harness-grid uses grid-template-columns: repeat(6, 1fr). The new fx card makes seven cards, so the desktop layout wraps fx alone onto a second row. The .harness:last-child { border-right: 0 } rule and the outer border then leave five empty cells. Change the column count to 7, or use an auto-fit layout.
