The server's connection ran with SQLite's default 2 MiB page cache, so on a large statev2.sqlite every query re-read its b-tree pages from the OS with a pread per 4 KiB page. Bound the cache at 64 MiB instead. SQLite fills it only as pages are read, so a small database uses no more memory than before. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR changes the default SQLite page-cache budget used by server and CLI persistence, potentially increasing memory usage for large databases. Although the implementation is small and tested, the product-default change warrants human review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Note This comment is posted by Julius' dot The measurements establish fewer repeated reads, but this also changes every server and CLI process from a 2 MiB cache budget to 64 MiB. The linked triage does not decide that memory tradeoff. Can a maintainer confirm the new default under the scope policy? Leaving this open for that decision. |
The setup test now asserts -65536, as the busy_timeout test asserts 5000, so it fails on main with "expected -2000 to equal -65536" and the constant no longer needs to be exported. SQLite fills the cache only as pages are read, so a process holds at most the pages it has read, up to the database's size or 64 MiB. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Confirm the cache budget and measure representative peak memory.
PRAGMA cache_size = -65536 increases the suggested cache budget for each SQLite connection. The cache fills as pages are read, so concurrent server and CLI processes can each grow toward 64 MiB. Confirm maintainer approval for this product-default change under the scope policy, and include peak-memory measurements for representative server and CLI workloads, including concurrent use.

The server and the
t3CLI openstatev2.sqlitewith SQLite's default page cache of 2,000 KiB (PRAGMA cache_sizereads -2000). On a large database, pages that don't fit in 2 MiB get read from the OS again, onepreadper 4 KiB page, on the server's main thread (#14701).Change
Sqlite.tssetsPRAGMA cache_size = -65536(64 MiB) with the other connection pragmas, before migrations.Scope and approval
Triage: #14701 (comment). @Dropje97 ran the same value on a 10.4 GB database, with two other changes: #14701 (comment)
Open decision: @juliusmarminge left this open for a maintainer to confirm the new default under the scope policy. Memory facts:
shrink_memory, no heap limit).cache_sizeis a suggested budget, not an RSS limit.t3CLI or as the desktop app's Node child process (a second backend process when the WSL backend is on in Windows); and eacht3 auth,t3 connect,t3 pairort3 projectcommand, which is short-lived.cache_size(https://www.sqlite.org/pragma.html#pragma_cache_spill), so a large write transaction can hold up to 64 MiB of dirty pages where it held about 2 MiB.Why 64 MiB: the full shell list's first pass on a synthetic 4,000-thread database (before #17842) read 11,846 pages, about 46 MiB. On a live 21.8 GB database a 20% list sample read 55.7 MiB, and the per-thread statement over the 200 most recent threads needs at least 1,169 pages, about 4.6 MiB. So 64 MiB holds the full list on the synthetic database but not the largest live one, and the per-thread working set with room to spare.
Out of scope: the shell SQL, and #14703's reader worker, whose connection doesn't run this setup. No
mmap_size: an I/O error on a mapped page ends the process with a signal instead of returningSQLITE_IOERR, and the CLI opens the same file (https://www.sqlite.org/mmap.html).What it buys on current main
Main's shell statement after #17842 and #17843. Linux x64, live 21.8 GB database, 4,492 threads, separate read-only connection, one read transaction, warm medians; reads are read syscalls:

getThreadShell(the per-thread statement) for thread updates, after coalescing events per thread. The gain is read syscalls and kernel CPU. Wall time moves only on the per-thread read, 8.2 to 6.4 ms for 200 calls. The list sample doesn't get faster, nor does the full snapshot (synthetic, before #17842: 13,962 reads to 2, 147.0 to 151.9 ms). A commit from another connection, such as a CLI command, drops the server's cached pages at either size; it refills up to the same budget.Verification
