Problem

The composer's slash menu opens only when / starts a line. Typing Use /review mid-sentence gives no completion, while Use $review does (discussion #6962).

Change

A / at the start of any word now opens the existing slash menu on web, desktop, and mobile. The fix is in the two trigger parsers: web's detectComposerTrigger and the shared one used by both mobile composers. The menus already decide what each position offers, so only their message-start check changes:

  • Provider commands appear only when nothing but whitespace comes before the /. Sends are trimmed and the server already treats trimStart().startsWith("/") as a command, so /review-pr runs. The check used to be offset 0, which never mattered because leading whitespace previously blocked the menu entirely.
  • T3 commands (/model, /plan, /default) and skills appear everywhere. Choosing a skill inserts $name as it already does, and Show skills in slash menu still controls whether skills are listed.
  • A word with a second slash stays plain text. That covers Use /tmp/build.sh, /etc/hosts at the start of a line, and a caret placed before the second slash, as in /et|c/hosts. Line-leading paths used to open an empty menu, so this also changes them.

Mobile's line-leading /model <query> picker is unchanged. The user guide's composer section now describes the word-start rule.

Selecting a slash completion from the middle of its name replaces the entire token; the menu still filters by the text before the caret.

Enter and Tab keep their existing menu behavior: while the menu shows matches, they pick the highlighted or first one, as with $, @, and line-leading /. Mid-line / never opened the menu before, so this exposure is new. Pressing Enter right after a mid-sentence /word that matches a description now selects instead of sending. Escape dismisses the menu for that word.

Scope and approval

This follows discussion #6962 and the maintainer-account direction on #8069, which was disclosed as agent-written on Theo's behalf. That direction keeps bare inline skill names and requires the /tmp/build.sh and /etc/hosts exclusions, provider commands only before prior prompt content, and mobile leading-whitespace coverage.

Verification

  • The new parser cases for web and shared (Use /rev, Use\n /rev, /rev, and the line-leading /etc/hosts) failed on origin/main 393ff4c and pass with this change. The mobile composer test also failed on main and passes. In it, /rev and /rev offer the provider command and the skill, while Use /rev and Use\n/rev offer only the skill. Path, URL, mid-path caret, and /model <query> cases pass.
  • vp test run passed 5 files with 159 tests: the shared and web trigger tests, slash search, trigger dismissal state, and the mobile command menu. Shared, web, and mobile typechecks passed, and targeted lint and git diff --check were clean.
  • Browser pass in the T3 Browser panel (shared web UI, isolated dev state, dark theme, 1100x760): Use /t3-contribution offers only that skill, Tab inserts the skill chip and typing continues, Use /tmp/build.sh opens no menu, / offers provider commands, and Use / offers T3 commands and skills only. On origin/main 393ff4c the same prompt opens no menu.
  • Nine caret-inside-token regressions fail at 338a262768 and pass with the follow-up fix. Web cursor conversion and mobile-menu tests cover opening completion for a second skill on the same line, as reported in [Bug]: Composer: can't insert a second slash-command skill on the same line (needs Shift+Return) #17655. The separate native mobile pill-rendering comment remains unverified. The browser evidence below predates this follow-up; no new browser pass was run.
  • Not run: a native mobile run or an Electron shell pass.

Before: on main, Use /t3-contribution opens no menu. After: the same prompt offers the matching skill.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds automatically active inline /skill completion across the shared parser, web composer, and both mobile composers, changing how previously ordinary prompt text is handled. Focused tests cover the new behavior, but the cross-client user-facing capability is broader than a self-contained mechanical or bug-fix change.

Walkthrough

Web and mobile composers recognize slash commands at the start of a word, including after preceding text. Path-like tokens remain literal. The web composer also applies command-position checks to the active editor text.

Changes

Inline Slash Command Recognition

Layer / File(s) Summary
Slash trigger recognition
packages/shared/src/composerTrigger.ts, packages/shared/src/composerTrigger.test.ts, apps/web/src/composer-logic.ts, apps/web/src/composer-logic.test.ts, docs/user/composer.md
Shared and web detection now recognizes slash commands at the current token and excludes path-like tokens containing another slash. Tests cover word-start commands, paths, URLs, and /model queries. The documentation describes the word-start rule.
Web composer command eligibility
apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx
The web composer uses the active editor text to determine command position. /compact also requires whitespace-only trailing text and existing availability and context checks.
Mobile command positioning
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/use-composer-command-menu.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/use-composer-command-menu.test.ts
The mobile menu treats preceding whitespace as an empty prompt prefix when filtering provider commands. Tests cover command placement, skills, path literals, and shared test-root setup.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 73d57

The change lets slash commands and skills open at the start of any word while paths stay literal. No remaining merge-blocking risk was found. Native mobile and Electron checks were not run, which is normal residual uncertainty.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/mobile/src/features/threads/use-composer-command-menu.ts: Adds triggerAtMessageStart, true when a slash-command trigger exists and the preceding draft text trims to an empty string. Leading whitespace therefore no longer prevents provider slash commands from being offered.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/mobile/src/features/threads/use-composer-command-menu.ts: buildComposerSlashCommandItems now receives the whitespace-aware triggerAtMessageStart value instead of checking whether the trigger starts at index zero.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/mobile/src/features/threads/use-composer-command-menu.ts: Adds triggerAtMessageStart to the items memo dependencies so command items are recalculated when this value changes.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx: The slash-command checks now use the pending question’s custom answer when present, rather than always using the thread prompt. A slash command is considered at the prompt start when preceding text trims to empty; /compact also requires following text to trim to empty and the existing availability and context checks to pass.

🤖 gpt-6.1-sol responding on behalf of NikitaMGrimm

This contribution uses the prior-approval route in CONTRIBUTING.md. The maintainer-account scope comment on #8069 explicitly retains bare inline skill names and requires path exclusions, provider commands only before prior prompt content, and mobile leading-whitespace coverage. That comment is disclosed as an automated response on Theo’s behalf.

The implementation follows that direction, credits the original author, and supplies the actual failing-baseline images and selection video that were missing when #8069 was closed. The automatic approvability verdict can remain separate from this scope evidence; a maintainer’s review and merge decision are still needed.

Hi! We are cleaning up open PRs, and this one does not say which model or harness was used to create it. If this change is really important, we recommend rebuilding the PR with a newer model and noting the model and harness in the PR description.

🤖 Claude Opus 5.5 writing on behalf of NikitaMGrimm

Resubmitted as #18311. This PR was closed for not naming a model or harness, but its description ends with that disclosure (Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code in T3 Code; gpt-6-astra via Codex in T3 Code), and I can't reopen it from my side. #18311 is the same change rebased onto current main, with the focused checks rerun and the disclosure repeated at the top of the description.
