Fixes #14990

Problem

Removing a worktree on Windows can delete the contents of any NTFS junction inside it. Junctions are the usual way to share a folder such as the main checkout's node_modules without admin rights. Git for Windows before 2.54 follows junctions in git worktree remove and deletes what they point to, with or without --force. Every removal in T3 Code goes through removeWorktree: the delete-thread dialog, cancelled worktree setup, the MCP rollback, and automatic storage cleanup. Any of them could empty the main checkout's node_modules.

Git 2.54 and later no longer follow junctions, but removal is then incomplete. Git exits 0 and leaves the worktree folder on disk with the junction still inside.

Change

This follows the approach proposed in the #14990 triage. On Windows, removeWorktree first walks the worktree and unlinks every link that points to a directory, without following it, then runs git worktree remove as before.

  • Only linked worktrees are walked. The walk runs only when the path has a .git file, so the main checkout (which has a .git directory) is never touched.
  • Never follows links. It goes down into real directories only, using typed readdir entries, so a large real node_modules doesn't cost an extra stat per file. It skips .git.
  • Only directory links are removed. Links to files are left for Git, so a tracked file symlink doesn't make a clean worktree look modified to a non-forced removal.
  • Fails safe. If a link can't be unlinked, removeWorktree fails with a GitCommandError before Git runs, rather than falling back to the path that can delete data.
  • Other platforms are unchanged. Git there already only unlinks symlinks.

Open PR #15833 also touches this area, but it cleans up leftover junctions only after git worktree remove succeeds. That fixes the leftover-folder symptom on Git 2.54+, but not the data loss on older Git, because the deletion happens inside git worktree remove. Unlinking first covers both.

Scope and approval

#14990 is a triaged bug (data loss), and this is the fix shape the maintainer proposed in that thread. It is contained in removeWorktree plus one test.

Verification

  • Added removes a worktree without deleting what its junctions point to to apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts. It creates a linked worktree with junctions to the main checkout's ignored node_modules, at the root and at packages/app/node_modules. It then removes the worktree with the default force: false (the storage-cleanup case) and asserts the worktree folder is gone and the shared file still reads keep.
  • On Windows 11 with Git 2.54.0.windows.1, without the fix the test fails because the worktree folder is left behind (the 2.54+ symptom). With the fix it passes.
  • vp test run src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts -t "worktree": 21 passed.
  • vp lint and vp fmt --check are clean on both files, and the server typecheck passes.
  • Not checked:
    • The data-loss variant on Git below 2.54, because only 2.54 is installed here. The junctions are unlinked before Git runs, so older Git never sees them.
    • macOS and Linux, where the walk does not run.
    • Windows with core.symlinks=true and a tracked symlink to a directory. That link would be unlinked first, so a non-forced removal would then refuse.

… point to

Git for Windows before 2.54 follows NTFS junctions inside a worktree when
`git worktree remove` runs, and deletes what they point to. Sharing the
main checkout's node_modules through a junction is a common setup, so
deleting a thread, cancelling worktree setup, an MCP rollback, or storage
cleanup could wipe it. Git 2.54 and later leave the target alone but stop
short: the worktree directory stays behind with the junction inside, and
git still exits 0.

All of those paths go through removeWorktree, so on Windows it now walks
a linked worktree first. It unlinks every link to a directory without
following it, then runs `git worktree remove`. It only descends into
real directories and skips `.git`. File links are left to git, so a
tracked symlink doesn't make a clean worktree look modified to a
non-forced removal. The walk only runs when the path has a `.git` file,
so the main checkout is never touched. If a link can't be unlinked, the
removal fails before git runs.

On Windows, a non-forced removal that Git rejects still deletes directory links from the worktree, leaving a checkout that should be preserved without those links. unlinkDirectoryLinks runs before Git checks whether removal is allowed, so an ignored node_modules junction is removed before an untracked file makes Git refuse removal; validate eligibility first or restore the links if Git refuses.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR changes production worktree deletion on Windows by recursively unlinking directory links before Git runs, affecting multiple cleanup and rollback paths. An unresolved correctness concern covers links that may be removed when Git later rejects the operation, and the new static-analysis suppression requires human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Windows linked worktree removal now removes directory links before calling Git. The cleanup skips .git directories, removes links to directories or missing targets, and preserves links to files.

Changes

Windows Worktree Cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Directory link cleanup
apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.ts
Adds a recursive scan that removes links to directories or missing targets. The scan skips .git directories and leaves links to files intact.
Worktree removal integration and validation
apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts
On Windows, linked worktrees are cleaned before Git removes them. Cleanup errors are wrapped as GitCommandError. The integration test checks that the worktree is removed and its dependency target remains intact.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 8ff73

On Windows repositories that track directory symlinks, deleting a thread or worktree can fail and leave the worktree behind. Resolve this, or explicitly accept it, before merging. The main junction-target protection works as intended.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 8ff73

The change protects shared directory contents during normal Windows cleanup. However, it can remove links before a removal request is accepted, and concurrent directory replacement can redirect cleanup outside the intended worktree. These risks require a privileged removal request or filesystem mutation access; unauthenticated access was not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Directory links are deleted before Git checks worktree registration and non-forced removal eligibility. A caller-selected directory with a .git file can therefore be mutated even if Git subsequently rejects removal. Cleanup failure, interruption, or Git refusal can also leave an otherwise retained worktree with links already removed; no restoration step exists. The base had no equivalent pre-Git mutation. Source-control-write authorization limits RPC reachability, but does not validate ownership of the selected path.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The walker recurses by pathname after classifying an entry as a real directory. A process able to replace that directory with a junction between enumeration and recursion can redirect the next read into an external directory, where directory links may then be removed with server filesystem authority. Typed entries protect against stable links, not this replacement race. This added traversal is absent at the base; its inferred impact is out-of-worktree link deletion, not demonstrated recursive deletion of target contents.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Exposure is confined to Windows removal execution, but is not necessarily confined to the selected worktree. Caller-selected paths with .git files, or external directories reached through concurrent replacement, can expose directory-link entries wherever server filesystem permissions allow removal. Cross-tenant access, credential disclosure, and target-content deletion by the new walker were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No verified Security finding was supplied. Inspection resolves the deferred candidate's missing walker and caller source, while supporting a conditional race path: filesystem mutation access permits replacing an enumerated directory with a junction before recursion, redirecting subsequent link removal. Practical Windows exploitability remains unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The RPC requires source-control-write scope, and server authorization rejects missing scopes before handler execution. The workflow checks the VCS type for cwd, but passes path unchanged to removal. The new cleanup gate checks only .git file type, not membership in cwd's registered worktrees.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Failure inside cleanup stops Git, but failure of the initial .git stat silently skips cleanup. The scan and Git invocation are separate, so later-added junctions are also unprotected. These cases can retain the preexisting older-Git exposure. Storage cleanup uses an in-process workspace lease; that lease does not prevent external filesystem mutation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish worktree registration, ownership, and removal eligibility before destructive pre-cleanup. Use a Windows-appropriate no-follow identity mechanism throughout traversal, distinguish uncertain precondition failures from legitimate exclusions, and define recovery for links removed before a later failure. Shared leases can coordinate cooperating callers but cannot alone enforce containment against external mutation.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Keep tracked directory symlinks until Git removes the worktree.

On Windows with core.symlinks=true, a tracked directory symlink can point to an existing directory. This branch deletes that tracked link before Git checks the worktree. A non-forced git worktree remove then sees a missing tracked entry and can refuse removal, leaving the worktree behind. Distinguish tracked directory symlinks from junctions that need pre-cleanup.
