Marking a thread unread had no way back. The only thing that cleared the unread completion was opening the thread, which navigates away from the list the action was invoked from, so the workflow the feature exists to support was unreachable. The action menu also had no unread input, so it could not render a toggle even in principle. The per-thread action menu now takes `isUnread` and offers Mark read or Mark unread, matching the pin/unpin and settle/unsettle pairs already in the same builder. Both sidebars, both multi-select menus, and the chat header menu dispatch it; the multi-select items count only the threads they would affect. Marking read stamps the turn's completion time, the same monotonic write ChatView already uses, so it clears the unread state in place without navigating. Mark unread is also disabled when a thread has no completed turn. It previously no-opped silently, since the unread marker is derived from the completion timestamp. Built with opencode/space-bunny-free in T3 Code through the OpenCode harness.
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a localized read/unread menu fix that reuses existing client-side visit state across both sidebars and the chat header, with no API, schema, infrastructure, or default changes. The new toggle and bulk-count behavior are covered by focused unit tests. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

The bulk read actions take their own counts rather than \count\, which looks redundant next to the archive and delete labels. Note what each one counts so a caller does not pass the selection total for all three and label a mixed selection with a count it would not change.

\markThreadUnread\ and \markThreadVisited\ both drop a NaN rather than write a bad timestamp, and \hasUnseenCompletion\ already treats an unparsable completion as not-unread. The new eligibility checks only tested for non-null, so a thread with an unparsable completion offered an enabled action that then changed nothing \u2014 the same silent no-op this series set out to remove. The bulk menus went further and counted such a thread as eligible, so the \(N)\ label could promise changes it skipped. Add one shared \hasParseableCompletion\ predicate and use it for every single-thread and bulk eligibility check, so the gate means the same thing the store does.

Fixed in Verified against the source before changing anything: The bulk menus were worse than the report stated: they counted a thread with an unparsable completion as eligible, so Took the suggested approach — one shared predicate rather than five inline checks: export function hasParseableCompletion(thread: ThreadStatusInput): boolean {
const completedAt = thread.latestTurn?.completedAt;
return completedAt != null && !Number.isNaN(Date.parse(completedAt));

Thanks for working on this. We merged the orchestrator V2 rewrite in #2829, and we are closing this PR as part of that transition. This PR adds mark-read behavior across sidebar and action menus using thread.latestTurn.completedAt. V2 uses latestRun and a rewritten sidebar status model, so this needs rebuilding across those entry points. Sorry for the extra work this creates. If the change is still needed on V2, please rebuild it on current main, verify it there, and open a new PR linking back here. We're closing the current implementation without assuming the underlying request is resolved. |
The problem
A thread could be marked unread, but there was no way to mark it read again.
The thread action menu had exactly one read-state item, a static
Mark unread. The only thing that cleared an unread completion was opening the thread —ChatViewstamps the visit at the turn's completion time. But opening the thread navigates away from the list the action was invoked from, so the workflow the feature exists to support was unreachable: mark a batch unread, open one to check it, and you are now inside it rather than back at your list.The menu could not have offered the reverse action even in principle —
ThreadActionMenuStatecarriedisPinned,isSettledandisSnoozed, but no unread input, sobuildThreadActionMenuItemshad nothing to branch on.A second, quieter bug:
markThreadUnreadreturns early when a thread has nolatestTurn.completedAt, because the unread marker is derived from the completion timestamp. That madeMark unreada silent no-op on a running thread — no toast, no disabled state, no error.The fix
buildThreadActionMenuItemsnow takesisUnreadand renders the item as a toggle, the same shape as thepin/unpinandsettle/unsettlepairs already in that builder:Mark read (1)/Mark unread (2)on a mixed selection.markThreadVisited, the same monotonic store writeChatViewalready uses, so it clears the unread state in place. Because the write is monotonic it can never move a visit backwards.Mark unreadis disabled when a thread has no completed turn, turning the silent no-op into an honest disabled state.Read state stays browser-local, as it is today — this PR does not attempt cross-client sync.
Why this fix
The toggle belongs in the shared builder rather than being added per surface, because there are already five call sites and they had drifted. Pin, settle, snooze and archive are each capability-gated in one place; read state was the only item with no input and no gate, which is exactly why the reverse direction had nowhere to live.
Reusing
markThreadVisitedrather than adding amarkThreadReadprimitive keeps a single monotonic write path for visit state, so the unread timestamp cannot be corrupted by a second, subtly different setter.Surfaces
buildThreadActionMenuItems; desktop renders the same items through the native context-menu bridge (icons are stripped there peripc.ts).threadLastVisitedAtById.Mark readreturns toMark unread; opening a thread still clears unread.backgroundLivenessstill takes the status slot ahead of an unread completion, and this PR does not change that precedence. See fix(web): show a thread's completion when a watch loop is still live #7655, which is already open and proposes changing it — deliberately left to that PR's author.UI changes

#12832 is open and adds a
thread.toggleUnreadkeybinding with aMark unread/Mark as readcommand-palette action. That is a different entry point — this PR does not touch keybindings or the palette, and #12832 does not touch the context menu — but the two overlap on the read affordance and a reviewer may want them combined. Flagging rather than assuming.Checklist
