The empty composer reserved 78px for the prompt and 16px around the footer. Drop the prompt minimum to two lines and use a 12px text inset with an 8px inset around the send button, so the button holds still between the resting and expanded layouts. The one-line resting row is now a pill: every composer corner reads one radius variable, 22px normally and 25px (half the row) while resting. The access-mode icon shrinks to the label's height. The timeline reserves the expanded height while resting; update that constant to the new 52px so expanding no longer shifts the list. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ween The transition pinned the footer at 3rem (48px), but the tighter expanded footer is 40px, so the centered send button sat 4px above its final spot until cleanup. Pin it at its measured destination height instead, so this change stands on its own without the transition PR. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A body resize during the tween cancelled and recreated the height animation each time. New animations stay pending on their first keyframe, so the card held its old height and then snapped. Retargets now keep the original start height and clock. At narrow widths the context strip's labels tween their width while the composer rests, so the strip controls re-measured every frame and re-rendered the composer on each layout flip. Measure against the width the labels settle at instead. Also pin the footer at its measured height (not 3rem), FLIP the actions horizontally, fade the relocated controls in right away, and pass stable send/compact callbacks so ChatView updates don't re-render the composer. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> (cherry picked from commit 9b414b6)
Reusing the original start height and clock is only correct when a mid-tween retarget lands on the same destination. When the destination changes (say, a multiline paste during expansion), applying the old progress to the new target jumped the card immediately. Retarget genuine size changes from the currently rendered height for the remaining time, started immediately so the new animation never sits pending. The timing decision moves into resolveComposerRestingTweenTiming with focused tests, including the changed-destination case. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> (cherry picked from commit b166990)
With the resting and expanded footers sharing the same end inset, the send button's horizontal offset is always zero, so the transition only needs the vertical slide it had before. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The question header rendered an empty icon slot, and the question and options were indented to clear it, so the whole panel looked shifted right. Drop the empty slot, align the header, question, and hint with the option text, give the header a top inset matching its side inset, and keep the shortcut key beside the option label on multi-line options. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> (cherry picked from commit b44c042)
The shorter prompt minimum (48px) fits one placeholder line with room to spare, but in narrow composers the placeholder wraps to two lines and ran into the action row. Below 28rem, reserve 64px so the wrapped placeholder keeps a line of space above the actions, as the taller composer did. The minimum depends on width, not on whether the prompt is empty, so typing the first character doesn't shrink the composer. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

A same-destination retarget kept the height animation's original clock but rebuilt the prompt and action slides from their current position on a fresh curve, so they could drift from the card edge until both ended. Replay each slide from its original offset on the kept clock instead. Also mirror the send and compact handlers into their refs from a layout effect rather than during render, so an abandoned render can't leave the stable composer callbacks pointing at uncommitted state. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winIncrease the resting reservation for pending-input and narrow editor layouts.
shouldUseRestingComposerLayoutcan remain true while a pending input is present becausependingUserInputsis not part ofcomposerHasExpandedChrome. The expanded footer then adds 8px ofpt-2, and a narrow non-approval editor adds 16px throughmin-h-16. These additions exceed the 52px empty-composer delta.
ChatViewlater publishes the measured expanded height, butMessagesTimelineuses the reservation as a footer spacer. The spacer therefore changes during expansion instead of keeping the timeline stable.Suggested fix

The code confirms your explanation:
Using 76 would over-reserve 24px in the normal case. The next expanded measurement would remove that excess and shift the timeline. Thanks for the clarification. ✏️ Learnings added

Note Written by Thanks for investigating composer movement. The diff reduces the prompt's minimum height, changes composer padding and corner radii, and restyles the question panel, which changes the existing layout beyond the reported movement. Product layout changes need explicit approval under Establish the problem and scope first. Please preserve the movement report in an issue and seek scope approval, or submit a focused fix preserving the current layout, for reconsideration. |
What Changed
The composer now uses the same insets whether it is expanded or resting as a one-line pill, so switching between the two no longer moves anything.
Consistent padding
min-h-12) instead of 78px. In narrow composers, below 28rem, where the placeholder wraps to two lines, it reserves 64px instead, so the placeholder keeps a line of space above the actions. The minimum depends on width, not on whether the prompt is empty, so typing doesn't shrink the composer.--chat-composer-cornervariable, 22px normally (unchanged) and 25px, half the row's height, while resting.Tightening the padding to one consistent inset is what made the composer more compact: the empty composer goes from 144px to 102px. The height it saves goes back to the conversation.
Keeping the transition smooth with the new layout
The rest/expand animation assumed the old dimensions, and a few of those assumptions broke once the padding changed. Upstream doesn't have these problems; they only appear with the new layout:
3rem, which only matched the old 48px footer.COMPOSER_RESTING_EXPANSION_MIN_PXgoes from 94 to 52 to match the new height difference. Otherwise the message list jumps 42px on every expand.resolveComposerRestingTweenTiming, with tests.ChatViewpasses stableonSend/onCompactContextcallbacks, so scrolling the timeline (which triggers the rest) doesn't re-render the memoized composer.Question panel
The pending-question panel sits in the composer, and it had the same problem: an empty icon slot pushed the header, question and options about 28px right. That slot is gone. Now the header, question and option text share one left edge, the header gets a top inset matching its side inset, and each shortcut number stays next to its option label.
Why
We rest the composer every time you scroll the timeline and expand it every time you come back to type, so any movement in it is seen constantly. With different insets in the two layouts, the send button and prompt shifted on every switch. You feel that as the UI being unsettled even if you never consciously notice it. One inset for both layouts means the composer changes height and nothing else moves.
UI Changes
The layout shift, frame by frame. Frames from real app recordings at 60fps, with a dashed line at the send button's resting position. Before, the button sits 8px higher when expanded and drifts on every transition. After, it stays on the line in every frame.
New thread, before (T3 Code Nightly) and after (this branch):
Narrow column, resting and expanding. Nightly on the left, this branch on the right, same window size and 200ms animation duration:
Resting row, before and after:
Question panel, before (T3 Code Nightly) and after (this branch). Before, the header and question sit about 21px in from the card edge and the options about 28px in, clearing an empty icon slot. After, all of them share one 13px edge. The two apps were asking through different providers: the Nightly one put each option's description into its label, so those render as single lines. Compare the left edges, not the option layout.
