Description

Fix the PyTorch Python lint job after ubuntu-latest moved to Ubuntu 26.04 with Python 3.14. The pinned pylint 3.3.1 / astroid 3.3.11 crashes with TreeRebuilder.visit_templatestr while analyzing dependencies, causing unrelated PRs to fail.

Type of change

  • Infra/Build change

Changes

  • Select Python 3.12 explicitly for the PyTorch Python lint job.
  • Install wheel, which is needed to analyze the wheel.bdist_wheel import in transformer_engine/pytorch/setup.py in the fresh Python environment.

Validation

The exact resulting workflow passed all four lint jobs in upstream PR #3494 CI. The isolated workflow file is byte-identical to that passing version; git diff --check passes. The broader audit found the same astroid crash in all 16 completed non-docs PR runs examined on October 23.

Baseline failure: PyTorch Python job.

This is a fork-only draft for author review. Its base branch snapshots upstream main dd02f3f7; the fork's main is older. The PR changes only .github/workflows/lint.yml.

Checklist

  • I have read and followed the contributing guidelines.
  • The functionality is complete.
  • Existing GitHub lint checks pass with the exact workflow change.
