dispatcher: improve error messages for blocked clusters and drain TTL validation - #5442
redhat-chai-bot wants to merge 3 commits into
Conversation
1. Status() now returns "cluster X is blocked in static configuration" when queried for a blocked cluster, instead of "unknown or inactive cluster". 2. Plan() returns a blocked-specific message when AffectedJobs==0 and the cluster is in the blocked list. 3. validatePlanRequest() checks the drain TTL limit before the general TTL limit for drain requests, so users see the correct maximum immediately instead of being misled by the higher general limit. to compare it with c.options.MaxDrainTTL divided by time.Second before
converting to time.Duration. Preserve the nonpositive-duration rejection and
only convert after the seconds-based bounds check passes, preventing overflow
from bypassing the maximum.
- Around line 395-400: Align drain TTL validation in the request path keyed by
request.Kind with validateStoredOverride so both apply the same configured
limit; ensure a drain accepted at request time is not later rejected when
stored.

…ains Change the default values for --max-runtime-override-ttl (24h → 48h) and --max-runtime-drain-ttl (2h → 48h) so operators have a uniform two-day window for both capacity overrides and drain operations. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Fix two CodeRabbit review findings: 1. validatePlanRequest: use seconds-based comparison for drain TTL (int64(MaxDrainTTL/time.Second)) instead of converting DurationSeconds to time.Duration first. A sufficiently large DurationSeconds could overflow time.Duration (int64 nanoseconds), producing a negative value that would pass the upper-bound check. 2. validateStoredOverride: reorder drain-specific TTL check before the general TTL check so drain overrides get the more specific error message. Add a comment documenting the MaxDrainTTL <= MaxTTL invariant enforced by ControlOptions.Validate. Add unit tests for: - Drain request above MaxDrainTTL gets drain-specific error - Plan for statically blocked cluster gets blocked-specific error - Status for statically blocked cluster gets blocked-specific error Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Summary
Improves three misleading error messages in the prow-job-dispatcher control plane when users try to manage blocked clusters via tp-dispatch.
Problem
When a cluster has
blocked: truein_clusters.yaml, users hitting tp-dispatch get confusing errors that don't distinguish "cluster is blocked" from "cluster doesn't exist":tp-dispatch status build04→ "unknown or inactive cluster" (doesn't say it's blocked)tp-dispatch plan capacity build04 1 --for 24h→ "override has no affected workloads" (doesn't say WHY)tp-dispatch plan drain build04 --for 48h→ "override TTL must be no more than 24h" (misleading — the actual drain limit is 2h, but the general limit is checked first)Changes (all in
pkg/dispatcher/control.go)snapshot.Blockedbefore returning "unknown or inactive cluster" — returns "cluster X is blocked in static configuration" insteadAffectedJobs == 0, check if the target cluster is blocked — returns "cluster X is blocked in static configuration — override would have no effect" instead of the generic messageAI-generated. The
prow-job-dispatchercontrol plane gives CI operators clearer feedback when they manage blocked clusters throughtp-dispatch.Status()identifies clusters blocked in static configuration instead of reporting them as unknown or inactive.Plan()reports when an override for a blocked cluster would affect no workloads.MaxDrainTTLlimit before general override TTL validation. The configuration requiresMaxDrainTTLto be no greater thanMaxTTL.
