📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win
Repoint a present record so the test checks the column grant.
The test erases id on Line 418 before it tries the passport_id UPDATE. The trigger in 0043 rejects every UPDATE of an erased row. If someone widens the grant to the whole table, repoint still fails because of the trigger, and this test still passes. The assertion message says "UPDATE is granted on the two erasure columns only", but the test cannot detect a regression of that grant.
To test the grant alone, run the repoint against a present record. Then assert the PostgreSQL insufficient_privilege SQLSTATE (42501), not only is_err(). The trigger message ODAL_PERSONAL_DATA would then show that the trigger refused the write and the grant did not.

Record which admin performed the erasure.
The handler discards the caller identity (RequireAdmin(_auth)). The tombstone stores the record, passport, field and instant, but not the actor. The route doc cites Art. 5(2) accountability as the basis for keeping the tombstone. Without the actor, the operator cannot show who erased the record. Other admin removal routes in this node keep a provenance trail. For example, the facilities and operator-identifier routes have append-only audit routes.
The smallest fix is a structured tracing::info! with auth.user_id and the record identifier after a successful first erasure. Do not log passport_id, because the module doc treats it as personal data. The durable fix is an actor column on the tombstone or an audit entry, in a later migration.

Expand description
The canonical Digital Product Passport record as defined by EU ESPR.
Set at publish time; `None` for drafts.
§`created_at: DateTime<Utc>`§`updated_at: DateTime<Utc>`§`published_at: Option<DateTime<Utc>>`§`schema_version: String`
Semantic version of the sector schema used to validate this record.
§`retention_locked: bool`
Set to `true` permanently on first publish; never unset thereafter.
Retention-locked passports must remain publicly accessible for the period defined in the applicable EU ESPR delegated act (typically 10–15 years after the product’s end of life).
§`version: u32`
Monotonically increasing version counter. `1` on first publish; increments each time a new passport version supersedes this one (set on the successor).
§`supersedes_id: Option<PassportId>`

### impl Passport

#### pub fn validate(&self) -> Result<(), DppError>
Validate passport fields for structural correctness and sector-data integrity.
Checks:
* `product_name` is non-empty
* `manufacturer.name` is non-empty
* `manufacturer.address` is non-empty
* `schema_version` follows semver pattern (x.y.z)
* `co2e_per_unit` is non-negative if present
* `repairability_score` is in range [0.0, 10.0] if present
* `sector_data.sector()` matches `self.sector` if present
* `sector_data` passes JSON Schema + cross-field rules via `crate::domain::validation::validate_sector_data` (non-wasm32 only)
Source
#### pub fn transition_to(&mut self, next: PassportStatus) -> Result<(), DppError>
Transition the passport to a new status, enforcing the state machine.
Valid transitions:
`Draft → Published | Archived
Published → Suspended | Archived
Suspended → Published | Archived`
On the first `Draft → Published` transition this method also:
* Sets `retention_locked = true` (ESPR retention obligation).
* Sets `published_at` to the current timestamp.
* Updates `updated_at`.
Source
#### pub fn redact( &self, viewer_tier: AccessTier, catalog: &SectorCatalog, ) -> PassportView
Return a tier-filtered JSON view of this passport.
NOTE: this is a self-contained domain convenience, not the authoritative public view. The payload that is signed (`publicJwsSignature`) and served on the public route is produced by the `dpp-crypto` policy engine (vault `public_view`), which fails closed on unknown sectors. Do not wire this into the public-serving path expecting byte-parity with the signed view.
Fields removed per tier:
* Below `Professional`: `batchId`
* Below `Confidential`: `jwsSignature`, `retentionLocked`
`sectorData`, when present, is independently redacted via `crate::domain::sector::redact_sector_data` against the sector descriptor from `catalog`. If the sector is not in the catalog, sector data is left unfiltered (fail-open at the domain layer; the vault layer applies `filter_by_access_tier` as defence-in-depth).

The canonical Digital Product Passport record as defined by EU ESPR.
## Fields§
§`id: PassportId`§`batch_id: Option<String>`
Optional batch or lot identifier.
§`product_name: String`§`sector: Sector`
EU ESPR sector — the delegated-act bucket that selects the applicable schema and plugin. (Replaces the former misnamed `product_category` field, which actually held a sector.)
§`product_category: Option<ProductCategory>`
Optional typed product category — a sub-type within `sector` (e.g. `Smartphone`, `EvBattery`). Never a dispatch key. See DATA-MODEL §3.5.
§`manufacturer: ManufacturerInfo`§`materials: Vec<MaterialEntry>`§`co2e_per_unit: Option<CarbonFootprint>`
CO₂ equivalent per unit — manufacturer-supplied or engine-calculated.
§`repairability_score: Option<RepairabilityScore>`
Repairability score (non-regulatory heuristic — not EN 45554 / EU 2023/1669).
§`compliance_result: Option<ComplianceResult>`
The computed compliance determination — status, metrics, binding `violations` + …[truncated]</excerpt>

pub enum ComplianceStatus {
PassthroughNoValidation,
Compliant,
NonCompliant,

Overall compliance determination for a passport.
## Variants (Non-exhaustive)§
This enum is marked as non-exhaustive
Non-exhaustive enums could have additional variants added in future. Therefore, when matching against variants of non-exhaustive enums, an extra wildcard arm must be added to account for any future variants.
§
### PassthroughNoValidation
Manufacturer-supplied values stored verbatim — no calculation performed.
§
### Compliant
Calculated and compliant with applicable EU regulation.
§
### NonCompliant
Calculated; one or more fields fall below regulatory thresholds.
§
### NotAssessed
The sector’s DPP obligation is not yet in force (provisional), so no binding determination is legally applicable — only structural validation was performed. See `gate_determination`.
§
### NotImplemented
Sector not yet implemented by this registry.

`dpp-domain` — EU Digital Product Passport domain types and port traits.
This crate is the dependency root of the DPP workspace. Every other crate depends on this one. It depends only on `dpp-rules` (pure regulatory rules).
No I/O, no async, no HTTP, no database drivers — pure domain logic only.

# Digital Product Passport — Data Model
This document defines the canonical data structures for all Digital Product Passports. It is the authoritative reference for domain types in `dpp-domain`, JSON Schema fields, and Verifiable Credential payloads.
> Last updated: 2026-08-13 (aligned to `BatteryData` v2.6.0, `TextileData` v1.2.0, `ElectronicsData` v1.2.0). Field-level detail lives in the types and schemas; this document describes shape and rules, not every column.
* * *
## 1. Design Principles
1. Regulation-anchored: Every mandatory field maps to a specific article in a delegated act or the ESPR framework. Non-regulatory fields are labelled `internal`.
2. Schema-versioned: Every passport record carries a `schema_version` field. Migrating to a new regulatory schema does not invalidate old passports.
3. Product group-extensible: A base `Passport` struct holds cross-product group fields. Product group-specific data is stored as a typed enum variant (`ProductGroupData`). Adding a new product group requires a new variant and a new JSON schema — no changes to the base type.
4. Provisional vs. Strict: Fields derived from adopted delegated acts are strict (legally mandatory). Fields from working group drafts are provisional and may change when the delegated act is finalised.
5. Append-only lifecycle: No DPP record is ever deleted. State transitions are append-only audit log entries. Archival is a state, not deletion.
* * *
## 2. Passport Lifecycle
`Draft --> Published (Active) --> Suspended --> Archived
| |
+--------------------------------------+
(can also archive directly)
`
State | Wire name | Publicly Resolvable | Meaning
--- | --- | --- | ---
`Draft` | `"draft"` | No | Under construction; not yet visible via QR
`Published` | `"active"` | Yes | Published; signed; JWS signature is set; `retention_locked = true`
`Suspended` | `"suspended"` | No | Temporarily hidden — recall, regulatory hold, or dispute; JWS is preserved
`Archived` | `"archived"` | Read-only | Product end-of-life; retained for regulatory record-keeping; immutable
Transition rules:
* `Draft -> Published`: Requires all `strict` fields for the declared product group to be present and valid.
* `Published -> Suspended`: Requires an authenticated action with a stated reason.
* `Suspended -> Published`: Requires re-validation of all `strict` fields.
* `Any -> Archived`: Irreversible.
Custom serde: domain `Published` serialises to wire `"active"` (and back). This matches the EU registry's terminology.
* * *

Run Passport::validate in the dry run.
validate_handler assembles the record but only runs guard_personal_data. Create also runs passport.validate() before persistence.
A battery body can contain different top-level and nested placedOnMarketDate values. Request validation does not compare them, but Passport::validate() rejects the mismatch. The dry run can therefore return success while create rejects the same body.

Update validate_handler after assemble_passport to call passport.validate() and
return field_validation_error for DppError::Validation errors before running
guard_personal_data, matching the create flow's validation behavior.

Refs #446. Stacked on #479, so the base is
chore/repin-core-0-22-0and the diff is only this slice. Merge after #479; retarget tomainonce it lands.Finishes what #479 left of #446: the erasable store for the records a
held: outsidestatement names, the route that erases one, and the dry run's personal-data findings.What it does
PersonalDataPorton PostgreSQL, in its own tableodal.personal_data_record(migration 0043). It is not a column ofodal.passport; the archive of past versions, the audit chain, the snapshots, the outboxes and the back-up copy never read or write it, and no route reads a record.DELETE /vault/api/v1/personal-data/{record}erases one and answers the receipt (record, passport, field,erasedAt). A retry answers the first receipt again. A record this node never held is404. It touches neither the passport nor the statement in it.POST /dpp/validatenow runs the same personal-data check create runs, so a preview cannot pass what create refuses. It reads no store.What a tombstone retains, and why it needs a retention basis
Erasure drops the content and keeps the row: the record identifier, the passport and field it belonged to, and the instant it was erased. None of the content. But a passport identifier can relate to whoever owns the item, and information that can be linked to a person is personal data (GDPR Recital 26), so the tombstone is not free of it. It is protected like the passport's individual-item data, and the operator needs a basis to keep it. Showing that it erased (Art. 5(2)) is one. Nothing in this node deletes a tombstone, and the app role has no
DELETEon the table, so the DELETE set inops/pg/README.mdis unchanged.Erasure overwrites the content in place. PostgreSQL's own write-ahead log, replicas and backups hold earlier row versions, and no application role can reach them. How long those live is the operator's retention, and the CHANGELOG says so.
Design choices worth a look
UPDATE, not aDELETE, and the database enforces that it is one-way. Column-levelUPDATE (content, erased_at)for the app role only, aCHECKthat a row is present or erased and never both, and a trigger that refuses any change to a tombstone (and any rewrite of a present record) even for a superuser. A retried erasure returns the first receipt because theUPDATE ... WHERE erased_at IS NULLmatches nothing the second time; two racing calls are handed one receipt (tested with eight).odal.passport. A record cannot be held for a passport this node has no row for;storeanswersNotFoundfor one. Passports are never deleted, so it cannot block anything. Core's in-memory holder accepts any passport id, so this is stricter than the stub.404, including a string that is not a UUID. The route does not tell "malformed" from "unknown".AppState.personal_datais required, not optional. A node that cannot erase a record it was given cannot honour a withdrawn consent, and a501that only surfaces when someone needs it is the wrong failure.assemble_passportis split out ofcreate_handlerand both call it. Consequence worth knowing: the preview now also refuses a malformedcommodityCode, which create refused and the preview passed.Not done, on purpose
storeorrecords_foryet; the issue asked for the store and the erasure path. How content enters (this API, or the operator's own system writing through the port) is a decision for the founder, and the listing route belongs with it: without one an operator has no way to learn the id of a record whose statement was never written.Passport::validate; it never did.Tests
Real PostgreSQL (
dpp-dal/tests/pg_personal_data.rs): round trip, JSONnullcontent stays present, a tombstone with no content anywhere in the row, a retried erasure returns the first receipt, concurrent erasures handed one receipt, a record whose identifier was lost is found byrecords_forand erased, listing order, unknown and non-UUID ids, the foreign key, the app role cannotDELETEor repoint a record, a superuser cannot resurrect or rewrite one, theCHECK. Parity withodal_appcan read every table.Over HTTP (

I disabled the dry run's check and watched the parity test go red.Through the assembled node (
dpp-node/tests/smoke.rs): a published passport with a record, read through the public, authenticated and credentialed views, history, versions, evidence and the list, none carrying the content; then every table in theodalandidentityschemas searched as whole rows, and the content is inodal.personal_data_recordand nowhere else; erasing changes nothing the passport serves.
