Just did. Issue is not fixed.
Please try collecting the TS Server log from the crashed instance:

Restart VS Code and reproduce the problem

Open the
TypeScriptsection of the output panel -
At the very top, find the first line that prints to path to the semantic error log file. It should look something like:

Look through that log file for the first error or stack trace you see. If you can share the log, I can also take a look to see if anything stands out

No errors, but it always ends with this. I've restarted TS server, killed and reloaded the remote vscode server, and just now restarted the server (in case I was running into some kind of resource leak). The log always ends with the following lines, followed shortly after by the TS server being killed and restarted. I've tested this on 5.8.3 and 5.9.2 and 5.9.3 and all have show the same behavior, which only started for me a few days ago.

Keeping those files closed does not reliably prevent it from happening, and restarting TS server after closing all other files does not reliably get back to a working state.
Matt Bierner (@mjbvz) I'm suspicious that this isn't TypeScript related, since the problem just started happening out of nowhere and also occurs with previous versions that have been around for a while, and seems more likely related to something in VS Code's language server implementation, but I don't know how to debug that.
Closing all files and opening one again cleared it this time. Immediately.
It seems to occur whenever any non-project files are open.
Reloading the window after closing all offending files seems to be fairly consistent.
Adding the offending file (
prisma.config.ts) to my project tsconfg.json file also seems to be fixing it.5 remaining items
Ok, this doesn't happen in every project, so it might be more on the typescript side of things.
And now I'm unable to rename generic type parameters for some reason in one case in the same project. VS code just gives the status notification "No result.". I feel like there's a dependency or type problem in this particular project that's causing everything to break and I have no idea what it is and don't know how to debug it myself. I can't share the whole project either.
This is still happening without fail every time I open a Javascript or Typescript file that isn't in the project. All my intellisense in every file completely breaks immediately, returning vscode to a dumb text editor. Fortunately I can open the same folder in a separate workspace if I want to refer to Javascript files without breaking my main workflow.
The quickest way to fix the problem after I close the offending tabs is usually just to reload the window. TS server seems to take longer to recognize that the files are no longer there, indicating there is still some VS Code crossover I believe.
I just had it happen again when I inserted the following code and it said it couldn't find declaration files. Changing it to straight import without the
{} asstill required me to reload window.import {} as "es-arraybuffer-base64/Uint8Array.prototype.toBase64"; import {} as "es-arraybuffer-base64/Uint8Array.fromBase64";

From the logs provided by Arlen Beiler (@Arlen22), it seems the InferredProject created for non-project files (like prisma.config.ts) is triggering an expensive updateGraphWorker and recursively watching node_modules, which leads to the Intellisense hang.
I'm planning to:
- Reproduce this locally by creating a project with a large node_modules and opening a file excluded from tsconfig.
- Trace why the InferredProject is not respecting standard exclusion boundaries or why it's hanging during the graph update.
May I be assigned to this?
Adding these options to the tsconfig.json doesn't fix it.

Final Revised Contribution: Terminal-Only TSServer Hang Fix for Remote SSH/WSL2
Critical Principle
The VS Code UI may be frozen. All steps run from an external terminal via SSH from Windows — never from inside the broken VS Code instance.
Step 0: WSL2 Daemon Health (If SSH Fails)
If SSH hangs immediately, the WSL2 daemon itself is dead:

Why both this and the sysctl fix?
wsl --shutdownis a hard reset — it kills all WSL2 processes immediately. The/etc/sysctl.confchange persists across restarts and reloads automatically when WSL2 restarts. They work together: the shutdown recovers the current session, and the sysctl config prevents the problem from recurring.
Step 1: Verify SSH Is Alive

Critical Deviation
VS Code is not frozen, so literally none of this applies, except the inotify step, but that's already set to max, I believe, so it's not the problem.
The answer should be hidden as outdated, off-topic, or low-quality to prevent taking up page space. The inotify was a good call though and I should have posted what mine was set to but I had already checked it and I believe it was maxed out. The log simply ends with a watcher line and that's it.
I believe a workaround I did end up finding was removing the google apis from the types I was using. There might be something there to investigate but it's possible the entire graph is so big it simply crashes. It's also possible that ts-go won't have this bug.
The log shows TS Server creating an inferred project and registering watchers, but it does not include an error, stack trace, or the request that stops completing. Please provide either a small project that reproduces the hang or the complete verbose TS Server log from one failing session, including the
updateOpenrequest that opens the file outsidetsconfig.jsonand all output through the server restart. Please also include the TypeScript version selected by VS Code and the relevanttsconfig.jsonand workspace settings. Remove workspace paths and source text if needed.

Basically what happens is that the "Loading intellisense status" spinner spins forever, no matter what I try restarting, including killing the entire remote server, restarting the extension host, reloading the window, restarting TS server. It just stays spinning. While this is happening, the normal navigation that I require for my projects is simply offline. No suggested properties, no navigate to definition, no find all references. I just get that infinite loading bar that scrolls across the top of the window. Running
tscworks perfectly fine and gives me all my expected errors. There are no obvious reasons why this is happening. It doesn't appear to be directly related to typescript.No idea what's causing it, but often have to reload the window to get it working again, which seems unusually disruptive to normal development. This is a typescript project but I've been using the same version of Typescript with no issues. Not exactly sure how to downgrade either.
Correction: I have to kill the remote server and reload the window.
Correction: That did not fix it. Workaround unknown.
