Play videos in native (non-WebView) mode - #66
mazaleyrat wants to merge 6 commits into
Conversation
Native mode only calls api/Asset/RandomImageAndInfo, which skips video assets on the server, so ShowVideos had no effect unless the WebView was used. On low-end devices like Frameo frames the WebView can't render video smoothly. Use api/Asset to decide when a video slot comes up and play it in a VideoView (MediaPlayer with hardware decode, on its own surface), sending the Authorization header. Images keep the existing RandomImageAndInfo path. Videos play muted; next/previous/pause, settings and inactive mode stop or control playback, and a video that doesn't start within 20s is skipped. - Line 800: Update previousAction() so that when a video is active, it selects
currentImage as the image to show before applying the existing image-history
behavior. Preserve the existing behavior when no video is active.
- Line 469: Update the timer-start calls in getNextImage(), onSettingsLoaded(),
and nextAction() to start the image timer only when the selected asset is not a
video; preserve the existing playVideo() flow so the timer stays stopped while a
video plays.
- Around line 414-416: Update the api/Asset request callback around
assetQueue.addAll and getNextImage to reject responses and failures from an
earlier settings session. Cancel outstanding requests or capture a
settings-generation token and verify it before handling either callback;
invalidate the token when settings reload or WebView mode is entered so stale
assets cannot repopulate the queue or be played with the new server URL.
- Around line 451-453: In the video preparation flow around videoView.start(),
do not remove videoStallRunnable before playback begins; keep the startup
timeout active until a rendering-start event confirms playback, or retain a
separate startup watchdog for that interval.

…list - startImageTimer() is a no-op while a video plays, so a video picked right after a timer restart (onVideoFinished, nextAction) isn't cut off after one image interval - keep the startup watchdog until MEDIA_INFO_VIDEO_RENDERING_START instead of clearing it on prepare - Previous during a video goes back to the image shown before it - drop api/Asset responses from an earlier settings session Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

🟡 Minor · Discard late image responses while video playback is active. · MainActivity.kt:436-455

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winDiscard late image responses while video playback is active.
A prior
getNextRandomImage()response can arrive afterplayVideo()starts. The callback updatescurrentImageand callsshowImage().VideoViewremains on top because it appears after bothImageViewelements inmain_view.xml, so the video is not covered and the callback does not start an image timer. However,
previousAction()usescurrentImageduring video playback. A late response can therefore replace the preceding image with an image that was never displayed before the video. Ignore the response before updatingcurrentImage.Suggested fix
val imageResponse = response.body() if (imageResponse != null) { + if (isPlayingVideo) return previousImage = currentImage currentImage = imageResponse showImage(imageResponse)🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Problem
With "Use WebView?" turned off,
ShowVideoshas no effect. Native mode only callsapi/Asset/RandomImageAndInfo, and the server skips video assets for that endpoint. So on low-end devices, where native mode is the only smooth option, videos never show. The WebView fallback doesn't help much on these devices. On a Frameo frame (Rockchip RK3326, Android 9, WebView 125), a 720p 60 fps clip in the web client rendered at about 20 fps and used ~196% CPU.
Change
In native mode, the app now fetches
api/Assetto decide whether the next slot is a video or an image:VideoView(MediaPlayer: hardware decode, its own surface) fromapi/Asset/{id}/Asset?assetType=Video. TheAuthorization: Bearerheader is passed throughsetVideoURI(uri, headers), so it works withAuthenticationSecretset.RandomImageAndInfo, so photo date, location, thumbhash and splitview behave as before. The queue only decides when a video slot comes up.onDestroystop playback. Pause toggles the video.api/Assetfails or returns nothing, the app falls back to the previous behaviour (RandomImageAndInfo).Videos play muted.
PlayAudioisn't wired into native mode in this PR.Testing
Tested only on the Frameo device above, with server v1.0.39.0 and
ShowVideos: true. Not tested: other devices, splitview combined with videos, the screensaver service (it isn't changed by this PR).
