Summary

specs/security-architecture-spec-summary.md describes the GitHub Agentic Workflows (gh-aw) security architecture: a 7-layer defense-in-depth model enforcing seven formal security guarantees (SG-01 through SG-07) covering input sanitization, output isolation, network access control, least-privilege permissions, sandbox isolation, auditability, and fail-secure behavior. This formalization models the architecture as a state machine with invariants drawn from the W3C-style conformance classes (Basic / Standard / Complete), the RFC 2119 requirements across Sections 4–11, and the job pipeline topology (pre_activation → activation → agent → detection → safe_outputs → conclusion). Fifteen predicates are derived and mapped to Go testify unit tests covering all guarantees and edge cases.

Specification

  • File: specs/security-architecture-spec-summary.md
  • Focus area: Multi-layer CI/CD security architecture for agentic workflows — input sanitization, output isolation, network controls, permissions, sandboxing, threat detection, runtime validation
  • Formal notation used: TLA+ (state machine, invariants), F* (pre/post contracts), Z3/SMT-LIB (arithmetic bounds)

Usage

  1. Copy the test file to pkg/workflow/security_architecture_formal_test.go.
  2. Expose the following unexported helpers by adding thin exported wrappers (or use //go:linkname sparingly):
    • IsHandlerStaged(globalStaged bool, handlerStaged *TemplatableBool) bool
    • StepsRequireIDToken(steps []any) bool
    • GetPushFallbackAsPullRequest(config *PushToPullRequestBranchConfig) bool
    • NewCompilerWithOptions(opts ...CompilerOption) *Compiler
    • NewPermissionsFromMap(m map[PermissionScope]PermissionLevel) *Permissions
  3. Replace any // stub interfaces with real implementations once exports are wired.
  4. Run: go test ./pkg/workflow/... -run Formal
