The Load Patch page of the Iridium shows the name, bank and author of the selected patch in a narrow column. It leaves out every character which does not fit completely. On an Iridium MK2, a library converted with the bank Digital Collection Vintage showed Digital Collection Vinta, and the name DW-8000 Breathy Breakup Pad showed DW-8000 Breathy Brea.

The font is proportional, so a character limit would either still cut texts off or refuse texts which fit: the bank above keeps 24 characters, the name only 20.

How the width is measured: with the character widths of DIN, the font the firmware names (DIN Regular / DIN Medium at fixed pixel sizes; the font data is not in the update file).

  • The widths come from the bold DIN which the Iridium MK2 manual PDF embeds. The few characters it does not use are estimated from DIN Alternate.
  • With those widths, the word positions in a photo of the page match with an RMS error of 0.5% of the line width (at most 1.1%).
  • The two cut texts bound the column: DW-8000 Breathy Brea is 10,413 units wide and was shown completely. Adding the k (10,972), or the g of Digital Collection Vintag (10,893), did not fit.
  • The limit is the width which was seen completely.

Behavior (new class WaldorfQpatDisplay):

  • GUI: the Author and Bank fields only take as much text as fits. Typing stops at the edge, only the part of a paste which fits is inserted, and a value saved before is cut to what the device shows. A tooltip says why.
  • CLI: a QPATAuthor/QPATBank value which is too wide is reported with the part the device would show, and nothing is converted.
  • Source metadata: values from the source are written as before. Cutting them could merge two banks which differ only at the end.

Checked:

  • The author and bank values of all 576 patches on that card: only Digital Collection Vintage and Organic Lo-Fi & Analogue Warmth are too wide. Digital Vintage Voices (22 characters), Digital Sound Factory and Legendary Synths 1 fit. On average 17 capital letters or 20 lower-case letters fit, but only 11 of the letter m.
  • A JavaFX test of the real settings class covers typing, pasting into the middle, replacing a selection, deleting, a saved value that is too wide and umlauts.
  • The CLI was tested with fitting and too-wide values.

The Load Patch page of the device shows the name, the bank and the author of
the selected preset in a narrow column and leaves out every character which
does not fit completely: a library converted with the bank 'Digital Collection
Vintage' showed 'Digital Collection Vinta' on an Iridium MK2, and the name
'DW-8000 Breathy Breakup Pad' 'DW-8000 Breathy Brea'.

The font is proportional, so a limit on the number of characters would either
still cut texts off or refuse texts which fit - of those two, the bank keeps 24
characters and the name only 20. The width is therefore measured with the
character widths of DIN, the font whose name the firmware lists ('DIN
Regular' / 'DIN Medium' at fixed pixel sizes; the fonts themselves are not in
the update file). The widths are taken from the bold DIN which the Iridium MK2
manual embeds, the few characters it does not use are estimated from DIN
Alternate. With those widths the word positions in a photo of the page are
matched with an RMS error of 0.5% of the line width (at most 1.1%), and the two
cut texts bound the width of the column: 'DW-8000 Breathy Brea' is 10413 units
wide and was shown completely, adding the 'k' (10972) or the 'g' of 'Digital
Collection Vintag' (10893) did not fit. The limit is the width which was seen
completely.

The Author and Bank options only take as much text as fits: typing stops at
the edge, of a pasted text only the part which fits is inserted, and a value
which was saved before is cut to the part the device shows. On the command
line a value which is too wide is reported together with the part the device
would show, and nothing is converted. Values which come from the source
metadata are written as before.

Checked on all author and bank values of the 576 presets on the SD card of the
Iridium: 'Digital Collection Vintage' and 'Organic Lo-Fi & Analogue Warmth' do
not fit, 'Digital Vintage Voices' (22 characters), 'Digital Sound Factory'
and 'Legendary Synths 1' do.
