This PR resolves a critical security vulnerability regarding the exposure of deployment credentials and key materials in the node-deploy repository.

Vulnerabilities & Anti-Patterns Remediated:

  • Secrets & Configuration / Tracked deployment credentials and key material: Previously, a plaintext deployment environment file (.env), plaintext keystore passwords (keys/password.txt), validator/BLS keystores, and node identity files were tracked by Git and were not excluded by the repository’s ignore rules.
    Fix:
    • The .gitignore file has been updated to explicitly ignore .env, keys/, and *.keystore.json patterns.
    • These sensitive files have been removed from the Git index (while preserving local working copies for the existing developer workflow).
    • A safe .env.example template has been introduced.
    • The README.md setup documentation now correctly instructs operators to establish an explicit copy-from-template flow (cp .env.example .env) into the ignored local file.

(Note: Previously exposed credentials and keys in historical commits must still be rotated by node operators, as removing files from the current tree does not erase Git history.)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Reformatted installation, Quick Start, transaction, and Docker guidance.
    • Updated cluster setup to create a local .env file from .env.example and configure deployment-specific values.
    • Documented editable configuration and genesis files.
    • Added guidance to rotate previously committed credentials or key material.
    • Clarified the three-phase Docker workflow, including validator registration.

This PR resolves a critical security vulnerability regarding the exposure of deployment credentials and key materials in the `node-deploy` repository.

**Vulnerabilities & Anti-Patterns Remediated:**

* **Secrets & Configuration / Tracked deployment credentials and key material:** Previously, a plaintext deployment environment file (`.env`), plaintext keystore passwords (`keys/password.txt`), validator/BLS keystores, and node identity files were tracked by Git and were not excluded by the repository’s ignore rules.
    **Fix:**
    * The `.gitignore` file has been updated to explicitly ignore `.env`, `keys/`, and `*.keystore.json` patterns.
    * These sensitive files have been removed from the Git index (while preserving local working copies for the existing developer workflow).
    * A safe `.env.example` template has been introduced.
    * The `README.md` setup documentation now correctly instructs operators to establish an explicit copy-from-template flow (`cp .env.example .env`) into the ignored local file.

*(Note: Previously exposed credentials and keys in historical commits must still be rotated by node operators, as removing files from the current tree does not erase Git history.)*
Add example environment configuration for local BSC cluster.
Add .env and keys to .gitignore for local deployment.

Review Change Stack

Warning

Review limit reached

You’ve reached a temporary PR review limit under our Fair Usage Limits Policy.

Your recent review volume is higher than typical usage, so adaptive limits are currently applied.

Next review available in: 27 minutes

Enable usage-based reviews in Billing to review now. Otherwise, wait until the next included review is available.
You're only billed for reviews past your plan's rate limits ($0.25/file).

How can I continue?

After more reviews become available, a review can be triggered using the @coderabbitai review command as a PR comment. Alternatively, push new commits to this PR.

To avoid repeated limits, reduce automatic review volume by pausing incremental auto-reviews earlier, using label-based review opt-in, excluding WIP or generated PR titles, or requesting reviews manually when the PR is ready. If your team needs uninterrupted high-volume reviews, an organization admin can enable usage-based reviews.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

Please refer docs for additional details.

Walkthrough

The README now instructs users to copy .env.example to .env and place deployment values in the ignored local file. It lists editable configuration and genesis files and instructs users to rotate previously committed credentials or key material. Docker documentation describes initialization, cluster startup, and validator registration as three phases. Other installation, node, and transaction documentation was reformatted without command changes.

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~3 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6d485

The README’s copy-paste clone command passes Markdown link syntax to Git, so operators cannot run the documented setup flow as written; this should be corrected before merging. A minor Markdown formatting issue also remains.

Check name Status Explanation Resolution
Title check ⚠️ Warning The title describes the changes but does not follow the required type(domain/pkg): short imperative summary format. Use a title such as "docs(deployment): stop tracking credentials and add safe env template" without trailing punctuation.
Behavior Safety ⚠️ Warning New .env.example is consumed after the README copy step, but its all-zero GENESIS_COMMIT breaks reset and its 127.0.0.1 RPC_URL breaks Docker validator registration. Use valid, documented defaults or separate native/Docker templates. Validate GENESIS_COMMIT, CHAIN_ID, and RPC_URL before setup, and add focused template-consumer tests.
Security ⚠️ Warning The PR adds ignore rules but leaves plaintext credentials and key material tracked: HEAD still contains .env, keys/password.txt, and validator keystores; .env includes KEYPASS. Remove sensitive paths from the index, rotate all exposed credentials and keys, and rewrite repository history if the files must no longer be retrievable.

Inline comments:
In `@README.md`:
- Line 100: Update the README sentence describing the Makefile orchestration to
say “3-phase” instead of “2-phase,” matching the preparation, Docker Compose
startup, and validator registration workflow documented elsewhere.
- Line 43: Add an explicit setup instruction before the deployment configuration
steps in the README to rotate any previously exposed deployment credentials and
key material. Keep the existing guidance about using the ignored .env file, but
make clear that copying .env.example does not replace credential rotation.

to use the configured 1. list prefix instead of 4., and insert a blank line

- Line 21: Replace the Markdown link syntax in the git clone command with the
