Lighten the public pages and clean their sitemap and meta tags - #486

The layouts inlined the whole JavaScript translation table in every page: about 600 KB of HTML per request, and on an Italian install every one of its 8,000+ entries mapped a string to itself. The table is now a script of its own, /i18n/<locale>.js, versioned by the locale file, cached for a year, sessionless and allowed in private mode. It carries only the strings that differ from their key, so an Italian page loads 10 entries and the other locales download theirs once. - The sitemap lists the address a CMS page is served at. An Italian install seeded with about-us and privacy-policy used to list both, and both answer with a 301. - The sitemap leaves out author, publisher and genre names containing a slash. Apache refuses an encoded slash before PHP, so those pages always answer 404. - The home title no longer repeats the site name when the hero title is the site name. - The meta and Open Graph descriptions collapse line breaks. A page with no description, including a CMS page with an empty one, falls back to the site description instead of a generic sentence. - A book without a cover shares the site's social image instead of the placeholder. - llms.txt names the site language only, not every interface translation.

Important
The new /i18n/<locale>.js route is unreachable on nginx installs that follow .nginx.conf.example. On those installs every JS translation silently falls back to the Italian key.
Reviewed changes
I reviewed the whole PR: the externalised JS translation table, the sitemap path fixes, and the meta/OG cleanup on the public pages.
- Translation script —
TranslationScriptserves only the non-identity entries at/i18n/{locale}.js. The URL is versioned by the file and cached for a year. The route is sessionless and allowed in private mode, and both layouts now load it instead of inlining the JSON. - Sitemap — CMS pages seeded with another locale's slug are listed at their route instead of the 301 alias. Author, publisher and genre names containing a slash are skipped.
- Meta tags — the home title no longer repeats the site name. Descriptions have their line breaks collapsed and fall back to the site description.
- Book OG image — a book without a cover now uses the site's social image, and its
Bookschema no longer carries the placeholder. llms.txt— it lists only the site's content locale (I18n::getContentLocales()).
I checked that CSP allows the new same-origin script: both the nonce header and the LiteSpeed cached-HTML header include 'self'. LiteSpeed only rewrites Cache-Control on marked HTML pages, and Apache's !-f rewrite sends the request to PHP. php tests/seo-public-pages.unit.php passes 24/24 here.

nginx configs written from .nginx.conf.example send every path ending in .js to the static-file location, which answers try_files $uri =404 and never reaches PHP: there /i18n/<locale>.js was a 404 cached for a year, and every JavaScript string fell back to Italian. Server configs are not updated with the code, so the route moves to /i18n/<locale> (same Content-Type, nosniff and cache headers). SessionPolicy and PrivateModeMiddleware already match the /i18n/ prefix. tests/seo-public-pages.unit.php checks the new URL and that its path carries none of the extensions the static location catches. ✅ No new issues found. The nginx concern from the prior review is fixed cleanly.
Reviewed changes
I reviewed f9c16c7, which drops the .js extension from the translation-script route so nginx no longer serves it as a static file.
- Extensionless route —
GET /i18n/{locale:[a-z]{2}_[A-Z]{2}}andTranslationScript::url()now build/i18n/<locale>?v=…. On nginx the request skips the~* \.(css|js|…)$static location and reacheslocation /, which hands it toindex.php. There is nopublic/i18n/directory, so thetry_files $uri $uri/step can't pick up a file or folder by mistake. TheContent-Type,nosniffand cache headers are unchanged, and the/i18n/prefixes inSessionPolicyandPrivateModeMiddlewarestill match. - Test —
tests/seo-public-pages.unit.phpchecks the new URL shape and that the path ends in none of the extensions the static location catches. It passes 25/25 here.

At the end of the admin body the blocking <script src="/i18n/<locale>"> held back the deferred bundles (vendor.bundle.js with SweetAlert, main.bundle.js) while the page above it was already rendered and clickable. The inline table it replaced cost no request, so the gap is new: in the deep-regression shards the NCIP "delete partner" click reached window.confirm() instead of the SweetAlert popup, and the genre edit button of workspace-controls-2026 did not toggle yet. Both fail on this branch and pass on main. The script now sits in the head, before the fallback __() helper, as in the frontend layout: it is cached for a year, and once loaded the body parses with the same timing as before. Locally the NCIP spec passes 3/3 and workspace-controls-2026 "action styling" passes, and both fail without this change. Reviewed changes
I reviewed 619880c, which moves the admin layout's translation script from the end of <body> into <head>.
- Script moved to the head —
app/Views/layout.php:53now loadsTranslationScript::url(I18n::getLocale())before the__/__nfallback block, the same as the frontend layout. The deferred bundles (vendor.bundle.js,swal-config.js, …) no longer queue behind a blocking request at the end of the body.I18nis already imported at the top of the file, so the call works in the head. - Body override kept — the end-of-body block keeps
window.i18nTranslations = window.i18nTranslations || {}and still replaceswindow.__with the lookup that reads the table. It now finds the table already filled, and if the request fails it falls back to returning the key.
php -l app/Views/layout.php is clean, and tests/seo-public-pages.unit.php passes 25/25 here.

…tion script by content Author, publisher and genre names containing a slash or a backslash were dropped after the query, so once a section reached its cap (5,000 authors) those names still took places that valid ones could have had. The same test now runs in SQL, before LIMIT (INSTR on '/' and CHAR(92), since LIKE reads a backslash as its escape). The PHP check stays for the trimmed empty name. The translation script's ?v= hashed the file's mtime and size. A deploy that keeps timestamps can change a translation at the same size, and the immutable URL would then serve the old table for a year. The version now hashes the content with xxh3, about 0.1 ms for a 650 KB locale file, and the md5 and @ operators are gone. tests/seo-public-pages.unit.php checks that two contents with the same size and mtime get different versions; it fails on the previous code. Checked against a local database that with a cap of 1 the sitemap lists the valid author instead of nothing. Reviewed changes
I reviewed d08ed46, which moves the sitemap's name filter into SQL and makes the translation script's version follow the file's content.
- Filter before
LIMIT—routableNameSql()addsINSTR(col, '/') = 0 AND INSTR(col, CHAR(92)) = 0as aWHEREbeforeGROUP BYin the author, publisher and genre queries. Names that can't be routed no longer take places under the cap. None of the three queries had aWHEREbefore (the publisher match is in theJOIN … ON), so it slots in cleanly. UsingCHAR(92)avoids theLIKEescape problem with the backslash, and the PHPisRoutableName()check is still there aftertrim. - Content-hashed version —
TranslationScript::url()now uses the first 12 characters ofhash_file('xxh3', …), and still returns'0'when there's no file.xxh3ships with PHP 8.1+, andcomposer.jsonrequires^8.2. A new test writeslocale/zz_ZZ.jsontwice with the same size and mtime but different content, checks that the version changes, and removes the file infinally.
php tests/seo-public-pages.unit.php passes 26/26 here.

✅ No new issues found. This commit only adds tests, and they check behaviour the PR already has.
Reviewed changes
I reviewed 7c9f2d7. It adds five checks to tests/seo-public-pages.unit.php and changes no production code.
- Script safety — a probe locale whose key and translation contain
</script><script>…&produces no literal<script>or</script>in the body. The check works becauseTranslationScript::body()encodes withJSON_HEX_TAG | JSON_HEX_AMP | JSON_HEX_QUOT | JSON_HEX_APOS. The original text still decodes intact. - Unicode round-trip — CJK text, an emoji with a combining sequence, and a newline all come back unchanged.
- Timestamp-only deploy — calling
touch()on the locale file keeps the same?v=URL, which is the other side of the content-hash test added in d08ed46. - CMS paths on
fr_FR—cookie-policyis listed at/politique-cookies, and a Unicode slug of its own is percent-encoded as/caf%C3%A9%20%26%20letture.
The new probe block removes locale/zz_ZZ.json in finally, the same way the earlier one does. php tests/seo-public-pages.unit.php passes 31/31 here, and the probe file is gone afterwards.

Browser regression shard 4/4 on 7c9f2d7 failed the flaky-test audit: 593 passed, 0 failed, 1 flaky. The flaky test is I don't think this PR causes it.
No fix exists yet. The fix belongs in the spec or in the update check, not in this PR. I can't re-run the job from here: the API answers 403, so the failed job needs a manual Re-run failed jobs from the Actions page. The next push to this branch will also run it again. Generated by Claude Code |

The probes write locale/zz_ZZ.json and used to delete it afterwards. A file already at that path now gets its content back; only a file the test created is deleted. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01EY98MP9mUiKL95YcoDGcUm

✅ No new issues found. This commit changes only the test, and it handles the case CodeRabbit raised.
Reviewed changes
I reviewed 2bd4db8, which makes the probe-locale test safe on a checkout that already has a locale/zz_ZZ.json.
- Probe file restored instead of deleted — before the first write, the test saves any existing
locale/zz_ZZ.json. Bothfinallyblocks now call a shared$restoreProbeclosure. It writes back the saved content, or removes the file only when the test created it. The second block now reuses$probeFileinstead of building the path again.
php tests/seo-public-pages.unit.php passes 31/31 here, and locale/zz_ZZ.json is gone afterwards.

Why
A look at a production library's public pages showed that every page carried about 620 KB of HTML, almost all of it the JavaScript translation table inlined by the layout. On an Italian install every entry of that table maps a string to itself. The same review found a few crawl and meta issues that hold on any install:
about-usandprivacy-policy, which answer with a 301.llms.txtadvertises every interface translation as a language the catalogue is available in.What changes
/i18n/<locale>in their<head>. It is a script versioned by the content of the locale file (?v=, xxh3, about 0.1 ms), served with a one-year immutable cache, without a session, and allowed in private mode. It carries only the strings that differ from their key, since__()already falls back to the key. An Italian page now loads 10 entries instead of 8,000+, and the other locales download their table once instead of with every page. On a local Italian install the home page went from 828 KB to 196 KB..jsextension on purpose. nginx configs written from.nginx.conf.examplesend every*.jsto a static location (try_files $uri =404) that never reaches PHP, and server configs are not updated with the code. The response is stillapplication/javascriptwithnosniff.<head>, not at the end of the body. There, the blocking request held back the deferred bundles (SweetAlert included) while the page above it was already clickable. An early click on a confirm button then fell back towindow.confirm().about-us→/chi-siamoon an Italian install). Author, publisher and genre names with a slash or a backslash are left out, because Apache refuses an encoded slash before PHP. The filter runs in SQL beforeLIMIT, so those names don't take places under the cap.Bookschema no longer points at the placeholder.Tests
tests/seo-public-pages.unit.php(26 checks) covers:full-test.spec.js,seo-feed.spec.jsandissue-regression.spec.jspass, as do the sessionless, LiteSpeed edge cache, security scan and sitemap unit tests./i18n/en_US?v=x→ 200application/javascript,/i18n/xx_XX→ 404, and both the home page and the admin dashboard load/i18n/it_IT?v=…from the head. Against a local database, with a cap of 1, the sitemap lists a valid author ahead of newer ones named with/and\.swal-plugins-other.spec.js(NCIP delete partner) andworkspace-controls-2026.spec.js(genre edit toggle) failed in the deep-regression shards. Both pass locally with the script in the head and fail without that change. All deep-regression shards pass on d08ed46.Additional review regression coverage
Five additional scenarios: script breakout characters, Unicode and multiline translations, cache URLs across timestamp-only deployments, the French legacy cookie route and an independent Unicode CMS slug. The SEO suite now passes 31 checks.
