fix(activity): find a chat tool call's details by its id, not its timestamp - #486
Conversation
…estamp Windows' clock advances every 15.6 ms, so a tool result and the next assistant message often share created_at. Timeline._call_arguments took the latest assistant message at or before the result and could pick the next call's, dropping this call's "query: ..." line from Activity. It now finds the message that holds the call's id. test_stop_everything_drops_calls_still_waiting killed the fake Claude Code as soon as the process existed; it now waits until the fake has logged its run, which comes late on Windows (claude.cmd, then cmd.exe, then Python). Closes existence-master#485

specifically for the serialized JSON id field rather than any quoted value in
tool_calls; construct the search parameter from call_id using JSON serialization
while preserving the existing session, timestamp, ordering, and Python
validation behavior.

Review on existence-master#486: the lookup searched for the raw '"<id>"'. Tool calls are saved with json.dumps, so an id with a character JSON escapes was never found. Search for json.dumps(call_id) instead; the Python check after the query still confirms the id. The same-timestamp test now places the call a tick earlier, with its result and the next call in the same tick, so it fails on main every time, and a new test covers an id that JSON escapes. Thanks @Tanmay-Ts, nice catch and a careful fix. I reproduced it on main with a real engine: a call whose result shares a timestamp with the next call lost its "query: ..." line in Activity. With your branch, both calls keep their details, and the restore path is fixed too. Your reasoning on the CodeRabbit thread holds. Approving and merging!
What and why
Closes #485. Same family as #236, in a query it didn't cover.
sentient/activity/timeline.py):Timeline._call_argumentsread a chat tool call's arguments from the latest assistant message withtool_callsat or before the tool result'screated_at. Windows' clock advances every 15.6 ms (Python 3.12'stime.time()usesGetSystemTimeAsFileTime; 200,000 calls here gave 109 distinct timestamps), so a tool result and the next call often share a timestamp, and the query could pick the next call's message and drop this call's "query: ..." line. It now finds the message that holds the call's id (instr(tool_calls, '"<id>"') > 0), still the latest one at or before the result.tests/test_claude_code.py):test_stop_everything_drops_calls_still_waitingkilled the fake Claude Code as soon as the process existed, but the fake logs its run only afterclaude.cmd,cmd.exeand Python have started and it has read the prompt, so on a slow startfake_claude.runs()was empty. It now waits until the fake has logged its run. Test-only.changes/485.fixed.md.How I tested it
