What and why

A subagent's files_created was worked out by snapshotting the files folder before it ran and diffing it afterwards. When several subagents run at once (delegate_tasks, or a foreground helper next to a background one), each snapshot window covers the others' writes, so every helper reported every file. It also had a smaller side bug: when the files folder started out empty, the if before guard was falsy and the helper reported no files at all.

Now each subagent collects files from its own successful tool results as they stream past in _run: file_write's saved/path (normalised to a name relative to the files folder) and the files_created list a sandbox run returns. The folder scan (_snapshot_files, MAX_FILES_SCANNED) is gone. docs/API.md now says where files_created comes from, and there is a changelog entry.

Fixes #94

How I tested it

  • New test_parallel_subagents_each_report_only_their_own_files in tests/test_subagents.py: two subagents run through delegate_many, each writes a different file with file_write, then both wait at a rendezvous tool so their runs overlap. Before the fix the first one reported ['alpha.txt', 'notes/beta.md']; after it, each reports only its own file, both in the return value and in the stored row.
  • pytest -q tests/test_subagents.py: 10 passed.
  • ruff check sentient tests packaging: clean.
  • Full pytest -q: 2714 passed, 3 skipped, 4 failed. The 4 failures (test_docker_backend, test_stop_everything_drops_calls_still_waiting, test_detect_never_fails_when_every_probe_does, test_mic_goes_off_when_audio_stops_and_on_close) fail the same way on unchanged main on this machine (macOS arm64), so they aren't related to this change.

Real test

  • Setup: no separate engine run. The test above builds a real SentientApp and runs both subagents through the real Agent.run_loop and the real file_write tool against a temporary SENTIENT_HOME.
  • Model: no model involved. The scripted FakeProvider gives each subagent its own replies, so the overlap is the same on every run. A real model wouldn't make the overlap any more reliable.
  • Not tested: a real-model delegate_tasks run in the app.

Checklist

  • Tests added or updated, and pytest / npm run typecheck pass locally for what I touched
  • ruff check sentient tests is clean
  • docs/API.md updated if the desktop ↔ engine contract changed
  • A changelog entry in changes/ (for example changes/123.fixed.md, see changes/README.md) if users will
notice this change. Don't edit CHANGELOG.md.
  • No keys, tokens or personal data in the code, tests or screenshots

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Subagents now report only files created during their own execution, preventing concurrent subagents’ files from appearing in results.
    • File reporting remains consistent when tasks complete successfully, are cancelled, or encounter errors.
    • Files are recorded from successful tool results when their paths are within the configured files directory, while unrelated paths and metadata-only results are excluded.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified that delegated task results list files saved by the subagent’s own tool calls.
    • Added a changelog entry describing the corrected file-tracking behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

Subagent file tracking now collects paths from successful tool results instead of comparing filesystem snapshots. Paths are normalized, deduplicated, and sorted. Tests verify concurrent reporting and exclude unrelated tool output.

Changes: Subagent file reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Collect files from tool results
sentient/agent/subagents.py
The subagent extracts paths from successful tool results. It removes filesystem snapshot scanning and its file-count limit.
Finalize and verify file lists
sentient/agent/subagents.py, tests/test_subagents.py, docs/API.md, changes/94.fixed.md
Completion handling deduplicates and sorts collected paths. Tests verify that concurrent subagents report only their own files and ignore unrelated tool results. Documentation describes the files_created behavior.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 55f75

The file-reporting change is ready to merge after normal checks; no outstanding issue was established.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 55f75

Concurrent tasks now report files from their own results rather than observing one another’s writes. The reviewed change affects reporting, not file-access permissions or approval requirements. No material security regression was identified in the assessed flows.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed exposure is per-run reporting metadata returned through delegation, published as updates and included in background messages. The traced consumers do not use the list to open, delete, transmit or authorize access to files.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Absolute result.path values are resolved and accepted only inside the configured files directory. Entries in result.files_created receive only a string-type filter, so their containment depends on the producer contract. The current sandbox producer generates relative output names after rejecting symlinks and source paths escaping its run directory; file_write independently confines actual writes.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — File-write restoration is guarded around the mutation itself, independently of the completion list. Losing a late attribution event therefore does not disable that restoration guard, and the finalizer does not use reported names for cleanup or undo.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before adding consumers that perform file actions from this list, define and enforce a normalized relative-path contract for every files_created entry. Keep attribution metadata separate from file-access authority.

Explanation

Issue #94 requires concurrent subagents to report only the files that they write. sentient/agent/subagents.py now collects paths from each subagent's successful tool results and sandbox files_created values. It removes shared-folder snapshot comparison. The added parallel test verifies separate return values and stored rows for two overlapping subagents.

The changes stay within issue #94. The implementation changes subagent file tracking. The tests cover concurrent reporting and path filtering. The API documentation and changelog describe the changed files_created behavior.

Thanks @ShryukGrandhi, and welcome! Four PRs on your first day: fixes for three of our flaky tests (#482, #483, #484) and #94 here. That's exactly the kind of help that makes the project better for everyone. We test every change end to end before merging, so I'm running the flaky ones many times under load and this one with real helpers writing files in parallel. I'll follow up with reviews on each.

Thanks @ShryukGrandhi, this works! I reproduced the mix-up on main with a real chat, two helpers in parallel each writing one file, on both Claude Sonnet and qwen3:8b: both helpers listed both files. On your branch each listed only its own, on both models. 🎉

One thing before we merge. _files_from only counts results from tools named file_write and execute_code (subagents.py ~471), and that list doesn't quite fit:

  • helpers can never run execute_code, because it's an exec tool and helpers can't use those (subagents.py ~353/~373), so that half never matches;
  • helpers can save files with other tools, like chart_save_image (integrations/plugins/charts.py ~62/~80), which returns the same saved/path shape and is now missed (the old before/after comparison caught it).

Could _files_from count any result whose path is inside the files folder (plus any files_created list), instead of checking tool names, and drop the raw saved fallback? That still keeps skill_save out (CodeRabbit's concern), because its path is outside the files folder.

Smaller things:

  • docs/API.md ~2518 says files come from the helper's own execute_code calls; "files its own tool calls saved in the files folder" would be accurate.
  • The 5 s real-time wait at the meeting point in the test (tests/test_subagents.py ~276) could be 30 s, so a busy runner can't quietly skip the overlap.

Thanks, and great first day!
