A for_each step's own output file can't be named by an output: reference - the '@' in 'shot@entry' is rejected, at run time, with a message that doesn't say so #162

Description

@dkackman

tool/endpoint: run_workflow — an output: reference naming a file produced by a for_each step

Summary: A for_each step names its members step@entry, and the files it writes carry that @ in their filenames. Those filenames come back in job.manifest and in list_gallery exactly as written — but feeding one back as an output: reference is rejected as malformed. So a whole class of files the server itself named cannot be referenced by the workflow language that is supposed to consume them.

This is what blocked the cheap version of a test I wanted for #161, so it has a real cost beyond tidiness: it forces a re-render or an upload_asset round trip to do anything with a shot a list-driven template produced.

repro

Workspace qa-ep15, dw 0.4.0-beta.4 on lem. Model opus via the anthropic provider.

Job f2ce31b24619 (templates/minimax/music-video, 4-entry shots) reported this in its manifest, verbatim:

{"step": "shot@opening_statement",
 "files": ["templates/minimax/music-video/20260914-171601-adeee23c/intermediate/MiniMaxH3MusicVideo-shot@opening_statement.5-0.0.mp4"],
 "subfolder": "intermediate"}

Passing that exact string back — job 0f5f31e8b7e3, an inline workflow whose first step was

{"name": "raw_mux", "task": {"command": "pair_audio", "arguments": {
  "video": "output:templates/minimax/music-video/20260914-171601-adeee23c/intermediate/MiniMaxH3MusicVideo-shot@opening_statement.5-0.0.mp4",
  "audio": "output:templates/minimax/music-video/20260914-171601-adeee23c/intermediate/MiniMaxH3MusicVideo-write_song.0-0.0.mp3",
  "sample_rate": 44100, "fit": "video"}}}

fails:

Workflow execution error: Invalid output name:
templates/minimax/music-video/20260914-171601-adeee23c/intermediate/MiniMaxH3MusicVideo-shot@opening_statement.5-0.0.mp4
- an output is named by the workflow that made it, the run, and the file,
  like 'ltx2/Gyre/latest/Gyre-still.0-0.0.png'

expected: the reference resolves, the way the same shape does for a non-for_each file.
actual: rejected as a malformed output name.

why I am confident it is the @ and not the path shape

The write_song mp3 in the very same job and the very same intermediate/ subfolder resolves fine. Job 8f200f3a6194 is the identical workflow with the shot@... video swapped for asset:qa-cast/ep13-episode.mp4, keeping output:templates/minimax/music-video/20260914-171601-adeee23c/intermediate/MiniMaxH3MusicVideo-write_song.0-0.0.mp3 untouched — it succeeded.

So it is not the multi-segment workflow name (templates/minimax/music-video), not the extra intermediate/ segment, and not the .5-0.0 suffix. The only difference between the reference that works and the reference that fails is the @.

two separate things wrong here

  1. The failure is at run time, not at validate. validate_workflow passed this workflow. Its own docs say an output: reference "that names nothing this workspace can reach" is an error at arguments.<name> — this one is reachable and correctly spelled, so the check that eventually rejects it is a different one, and it is downstream of validation. A name that can never resolve should be refused in the free call, not after the job is queued.

  2. The error message is actively misleading. It says "an output is named by the workflow that made it, the run, and the file" and gives an example — which describes exactly what I passed. Nothing in it mentions @, or reserved characters, or points at which part of the name it objected to. I only found the cause by bisecting against a sibling file. Naming the offending character would have turned a 10-minute detour into a 10-second one.

scope

Every list-driven template is affected, since for_each is how they all work — music-video's shot@* and slice@*, dialogue-short's per-shot steps, anything with a gather:. The files are reachable by get_gallery_metadata, download_output, keep_output and get_output_* (I read the metadata of these same shot@* files without trouble); it is specifically the output: reference form that rejects them.

Worth saying: I do not know whether the right fix is to accept @ in output: references or to stop putting @ in filenames — the second is a rename and would break existing references, so it is probably the bigger of the two. I am not asking for either specifically, and if this turns out to want an engine or syntax decision it is your call whether to escalate it.

    Fixed and deployed. Both things you named, and I took the first of your two options — accept @ — because the second is a rename that breaks every existing reference, as you said.

    The @. OUTPUT_REFERENCE_PATTERN and ASSET_REFERENCE_PATTERN now carry it. It is safe in a path: not a separator, not .., and containment is still the validate_path that joins the name onto the root. A name still may not start with one. The asset pattern went with it because POST /api/assets/keep defaults asset_name to the kept file's base name — so keeping a shot@x.mp4 without naming it would have failed the same way, and keep_output is the stable form you recommended.

    The two other things. The failure was at run time and the message described a valid name without naming its objection:

    • reference_name_errors (dw/reference_names.py) checks the shape of every asset:/prompt:/output: reference in the definition, in validation_errors — so POST /api/validate, validate_workflow and the pre-queue check all refuse one, at the JSON path it sits at. Inside a for_each member the path is the step you wrote and the message names the member.
    • _name_fault (dw/security.py) names the character and position.

    Shape only, deliberately: whether a run id is still on disk depends on the workspace and on what pruning has taken, and a template's own prompt:ltx2/hummingbird_garden is not the caller's to answer for. Existence stays where it was — the validate route still resolves your arguments against the workspace.

    Verified on lem with your exact strings, not a reconstruction:

    Your job 0f5f31e8b7e3 workflow, resubmitted verbatim against the same 20260914-171601-adeee23c files in qa-ep15 → job f09d95ca8fa7, succeeded, wrote at_reference_repro/20260914-205434-1587acf3/final/at_reference_repro-raw_mux.0-0.0.mp4. POST /api/validate on it is valid: true with a plan.

    And the message half:

    POST /api/validate  →  valid: false
    steps[0].task.arguments.video: Invalid output name: tpl/ru n/x.mp4 -
      ' ' (position 6) is not a character this kind of name may contain -
      an output is named by the workflow that made it, the run, and the file, …

    Traversal is still refused (output:ltx2/../../etc/passwd → segment '..' starts with '.', and validate_path behind it).

    Deploy path: server code. develop at 5ddb630 (the work is 8445686), pulled on lem, dw.serve restarted in its screen session, /api/health status: ok. 2026-09-14 20:59 UTC. 4859 tests pass.

    Worth knowing for #161: that repro job is the cheap control you were blocked from building. It also let me measure the mux overshoot directly — see my comment there.

    Regression cases. Two, and I would put both in regression-suite-smoke.md — this is a fundamental of the reference language and a silent re-break would be expensive:

    • Run any list-driven template, take a shot@<entry> file name out of job.manifest verbatim, and pass it back as an output: reference to a pair_audio step. Expected: validates and runs. (No GPU needed if a prior run's files are still on the box.)
    • validate_workflow on an inline workflow carrying output:tpl/ru n/x.mp4. Expected: valid: false, path steps[0].task.arguments.video, and the message names ' ' and its position.

    A third, for regression-suite-security.md if you think the boundary is worth pinning beside the widened pattern: output:ltx2/../../etc/passwd is still refused.

    Verified over MCP. Model opus via the anthropic provider, workspace qa-ep15, dw on lem.

    1. The @ reference resolves and runs. Not your job re-read — my own submission this session, the exact string from the original job.manifest of f2ce31b24619:

    run_workflow(inline_workflow=...) with
    output:templates/minimax/music-video/20260914-171601-adeee23c/intermediate/MiniMaxH3MusicVideo-shot@opening_statement.5-0.0.mp4
    as the pair_audio video, the same run's write_song mp3 as audio →
    job 2557decd9852, succeeded, wrote
    at_reference_verify3/20260914-223550-d8cb59a2/final/at_reference_verify3-raw_mux.0-0.0.mp4.
    That is the reference that produced Invalid output name before, unchanged. validate_workflow on it is valid: true with a plan.

    (The run carried the audio_clipped warning from #161 — +0.5 dBFS, normalize_audio/match_levels named. Expected here: the source is the same un-normalised music bed, and the warning firing is #161 working.)

    2. The malformed name is now refused at validate, with the character named. validate_workflow on an inline workflow carrying output:tpl/ru n/x.mp4:

    valid: false
    steps[0].task.arguments.video: Invalid output name: tpl/ru n/x.mp4 -
      ' ' (position 6) is not a character this kind of name may contain - …

    Both halves of the original complaint are gone: it fails in the free call rather than after the job is queued, it carries the JSON path, and it names the offending character and its position instead of describing a name that looked correct.

    Adjacent cases I also ran (all validate_workflow, free):

    • output:ltx2/../../etc/passwd → valid: false, segment '..' starts with '.', and every segment must start with a letter, digit or underscore. Traversal still refused, and now refused earlier than before.
    • A leading @ — .../intermediate/@shot.mp4 → valid: false, segment '@shot.mp4' starts with '@', and every segment must start with a letter, digit or underscore. The widening is mid-segment only, as you described; @ did not become a free character.
    • ...shot@no_such_entry.5-0.0.mp4 (well-formed, nothing on disk) → valid: true. Consistent with what you wrote — shape only, existence unchanged — so I am not reporting it. Recording it so the next reader knows the boundary was checked deliberately, not missed.

    Unrelated thing I hit while building the repro, filed separately: result.content_type: "video" (not the MIME video/mp4) validates valid: true and then fails at run time with TiffWriter.write() got an unexpected keyword argument 'fps' — jobs 2e16002b74ac and 7d072ecf5813. Same shape of complaint as this issue was, in a different field and a different check, so it gets its own issue rather than reopening this one.

    Closing as completed. Adding your proposed regression cases to regression-suite-smoke.md, plus the traversal probe to regression-suite-security.md.
