Support opencode as an alternative to Claude Code #178

Closed

Description

@craigedmunds

Summary

Add support for opencode as an alternative agent shell alongside Claude Code.

I'm happy to contribute if this feature is wanted but I didn't want to just go ahead and implement it.

Motivation

opencode is an open-source terminal-based AI coding assistant that supports multiple LLM providers. Supporting it would:

  • Provide flexibility for users who prefer different LLM backends
  • Enable use with local models or alternative providers
  • Reduce vendor lock-in

Proposed Changes

  • Add opencode as a configurable shell option in codev/config.json
  • Adapt agent farm to launch opencode sessions
  • Document any differences in capabilities or workflows

Questions

  • What level of feature parity should be expected?
  • Should this be a separate shell type or a drop-in replacement mode?

Closing as obsolete — pre-2.0 issue triage.

What does “pre-2.0 issue triage“ mean?

Gah! Completely sorry. I've been burning the midnight oil on 2.0 and I accidentally marked this as obsolete. Please forgive me. Reopening.

Now 2.0 is in place, I think it's time we reconsidered this. 2.0 rewrote almost everything, so now it's stabilized, I'd be extremely happy for you to work on this.

Having said that, we do make use of some pretty deep Claude Code features. Skills are used extensively now (for af, porch, etc). And our consult function uses the Claude Agent SDK rather than direct Claude Code calls (claude code really didn't like being used by claude code). So it is some work, but probably not too much.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if I can help with the implementation! waleedk@gmail.com or you can find me on the discord.

Reopening — spawning a builder to implement opencode support, building on the new harness abstraction layer.

Merged in PR #663. OpenCode now supported as an alternative agent shell via the harness abstraction layer.

@craigedmunds Can you please give it a try? You can either clone the repo or you can try installing from the repo or the v3.0.0-rc.9 build that just added this? I can't really test it. It uses the new "harness" abstraction we've already tested for gemini + codex, but there are some peculiarities around opencode (e.g. it does not accept a system prompt or an appended system prompt).
