Summary

  • Generate start.ts with createCsrfMiddleware before clerkMiddleware() so server functions retain CSRF protection.
  • Update existing createStart configs in either arrow-function form, appending Clerk to an existing requestMiddleware array without creating a duplicate key.
  • Skip unsupported configs with an explicit manual instruction instead of reporting a successful edit that only added an import.
  • Add regression tests and a patch changeset for the clerk CLI package.

Why

A custom start.ts disables TanStack Start's default CSRF middleware (since @tanstack/react-start 1.168.0). The previous CLI-generated file registered only Clerk middleware. For an existing file, the text replacement matched createStart(() => { return { ... } }) but missed the common createStart(() => ({ ... })) form. It could also insert a second requestMiddleware key whose value was overridden by the original key.

To reproduce the existing-file bug, run clerk init on a project with createStart(() => ({ requestMiddleware: [csrfMiddleware] })): the old action added a Clerk import but never registered the middleware.

After merge

  • Confirm the CLI release workflow opens or updates its Version Packages PR; merge it and verify the stable clerk@latest release completes. -> ci(repo): Version Packages #532
  • Smoke-test the published clerk init on a fresh TanStack Start app: generated src/start.ts should register CSRF middleware before Clerk middleware.
  • Smoke-test an existing src/start.ts with createStart(() => ({ requestMiddleware: [csrfMiddleware] })): clerk init should append Clerk without losing CSRF or duplicating the property.
  • Once the stable CLI release is verified, clear the CLI release gate for the Docs PR.

Recommended order

  1. SDK — clerk/javascript#10102. Merge its follow-up Version Packages PR and verify the new @clerk/tanstack-react-start release before merging the Docs PR. Dashboard, Skills, and Quickstart can merge in any order.
  2. CLI — clerk/cli#523. Merge its follow-up Version Packages PR and verify a stable clerk@latest release before the docs PR.
  3. Dashboard — clerk/dashboard#10372.
  4. Skills — clerk/skills#95.
  5. Quickstart — clerk/clerk-tanstack-react-start-quickstart#16. Its existing Clerk SDK 1.6.4 lockfile entry already works with the PR's pinned Start and Router versions.
  6. Docs — clerk/clerk#3539. Merge last, after the SDK and CLI stable releases and the other source PRs. Remove its do not merge label only when those gates are met.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The TanStack Start initializer now generates src/start.ts with CSRF middleware filtered to server functions before Clerk middleware. For existing files, it uses AST parsing to update supported configurations and checks the installed Start version before adding CSRF middleware. When it cannot safely edit a file, it skips the edit and provides applicable manual setup or upgrade instructions. Tests and documentation cover these changes.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7c7fb

In unusual start.ts shapes, clerk init can report a successful edit while Clerk middleware is not actually registered. Fix or explicitly reject those shapes before merging. The documentation gap about the Router minimum is minor.

When the TanStack Start scaffold can't safely add clerkMiddleware() to an
existing start.ts, surface it as a next step instead of only a dimmed SKIP
line. Without it, a re-run where everything else is in place reported
"Clerk is already set up" while the middleware was missing.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reject unresolved computed middleware keys before editing.

If key equals "requestMiddleware", the valid config { [key]: [csrfMiddleware] } passes this check as though it has no middleware property. Line 224 then inserts Clerk’s property before the computed property. The computed property overwrites it at runtime, but the scaffold reports a successful edit with no manual instruction. Reject unresolved computed keys, or resolve them before selecting the property to edit. (tc39.es)

Account for conditional returns before reporting success.

If the callback conditionally returns one config and ends with a top-level return of another, this filter sees only the top-level return. The edit adds Clerk to that config but leaves the conditional return unchanged. When the conditional path runs, Clerk is still unregistered despite a successful scaffold result. Skip block callbacks with other return paths unless the edit can update every returned config. (old.tanstack.com)

  • Ran the same version check before creating start.ts, and read the installed version first so catalog:, workspace:*, and latest resolve
  • Switched the generated start.ts to the createStart(() => { return { … } }) form the docs use
  • Added CSRF and Clerk edits in the existing file's quote and semicolon style, without reformatting the rest of the file
  • Updated the init README and changeset, since existing files get CSRF too
