BUG|Crash on Android phone when download podcast #113

Closed

Description

@gianfelicevincenzo

Obsdian: v1.7.7
Android: 14

Hi. I'm new to obsidian. This plugin works very well from pc. It also works well on the phone. The only problem on Android is when you try to download some podcasts. In fact, if you download the podcast, the obsidian application crashes during the download. Everything else works fine

    @chrsdk

    It still crashes on mobile on a fresh install of 2.17.0 with default settings.

    Cross-posting my reply to give an update here as well:

    Thanks for letting me know. I've been testing on my own mobile, which is a newer iPhone, and haven't experienced crashes after this PR. Following your comment here, I thought that it might be due to the app running out of memory.
    I managed to recreate the crash again by downloading 8 episodes simultaneously. Since we previously didn't stream-download (rather, we downloaded -> wrote in file-batches), that would lead to running out of memory.

    I've fixed that in #218 and will release it momentarily. Would you please help me test the next release, when it comes out? That'd be a great help.
    I would also appreciate any details behind the crashes (e.g. episode length, amount of episodes being downloaded, phone specs, ...).

    Re-checked on current master (07b2812, PodNotes 2.20.2) in Obsidian 1.13.7 on desktop Linux, in an isolated test vault.

    What a desktop can check: downloads now stream to disk in 4 MiB range requests instead of loading the whole file into memory. Downloading four 150 MB episodes at once kept the app's JS heap under 170 MB, all four files were complete, and there were no errors. The old code held each episode in memory in full, which fits the crash with several downloads.

    Still needs confirmation on an Android device. @chrsdk @gianfelicevincenzo, could you try the latest release (the streaming fix shipped after 2.17.0) and tell us whether downloads still crash?

    Verified PodNotes 2.21.1 in real Obsidian 1.14.4 on an Android 14 x86_64 Pixel 6 emulator.

    Android verdict: passed. I selected Lex Fridman episode 501 from https://lexfridman.com/feed/podcast/ and invoked podnotes:download-playing-episode. It downloaded 249,955,445 bytes in 134.6 seconds. The persisted registration and file size matched exactly, no partial file remained, and the app and WebView renderer kept their PIDs.

    Native PSS before/after was 90,921/95,567 KiB for the app and 102,278/83,960 KiB for the renderer. Samples used dumpsys meminfo --local; they do not establish peak memory. File, process, and memory evidence.

    Android download completed
