Summary

RSS-only subscriptions now use the shared refresh and episode-catalog contract for foreground discovery, auto-downloads, Smart Downloads and push hydration. Existing saved imports repair in place without requiring a catalogue match.

Closes #1079.

Motivation

Imported feeds previously had limited freshness support and were excluded from release automation. Private and premium feeds need working refresh and downloads even when they have no catalogue listing.

What changed

  • Add a source-aware catalog adapter for RSS-only shows, with conditional GET, a six-hour automatic cooldown, forced manual/push refresh and the existing shared fetch limit.
  • Repair legacy imports while preserving show and episode IDs, archive entries, preferences, playback state and downloads. Restore retains the saved show ID across redirects.
  • Admit RSS releases through the existing auto-download ledger and Smart Downloads paths, preserving background consent, network and retention restrictions.
  • Add explicit public-feed confirmation for notification activation, with device-local, URL-bound consent and registrations that one listener can remove without disabling others.
  • Teach the shared notification checker and weekly backup about RSS registrations, with quiet activation, exact release hydration and no catalogue fallback for RSS-only feeds.
  • Bind RSS notification topics and release history to the accepted saved feed URL; reject mismatched deliveries before display or hydration.
  • Persist registration cleanup and retry interrupted opt-outs across app restarts, including disabled or unsubscribed shows and legacy registrations.
  • Read complete bounded checker feeds, retain state after interrupted reads, and ignore unplayable entries.

Behavior & compatibility

  • Adding an RSS feed alone does not register it with the shared notification checker. Refresh and downloads work with notifications off.
  • Enabling RSS notifications requires confirmation that the feed is public. Its URL is published by the existing weekly GitHub backup workflow, and episode details are published too. Private, premium and token-protected feeds should keep notifications off.
  • Imported or cloud-restored notification settings cannot supply consent on another device.
  • Existing catalogue notification topics and payloads remain compatible. RSS payloads keep canonical show IDs and resolve the exact locally stored episode. Different URLs under one saved RSS ID have independent notification topics and release history.
  • Event-driven registration cleanup retries failed RTDB deletion and topic removal; it does not poll publisher feeds.
  • No new phone notification polling worker, Room schema change or identity re-keying.

What changes in the user's life: Imported RSS shows refresh and support automatic and Smart Downloads like catalogue subscriptions. Public RSS feeds can also receive release notifications after confirmation; private feeds remain usable with notifications off.

CHANGELOG.md

Added

  • Support automatic refresh, auto-downloads, Smart Downloads and explicitly opted-in public-feed notifications for RSS-only subscriptions.

Fixed

  • Repair existing RSS imports without catalogue matching or changing saved show and episode identities.

README What's New / Upcoming

Improvements

  • Imported RSS shows now refresh and support automatic and Smart Downloads. Existing imports upgrade while keeping your saved state.
  • Enable release notifications for public RSS feeds after confirmation. Keep notifications off for private or premium feeds because the shared checker publishes feed URLs in public backups.

Test plan

  • Follow-up RSS wording and Home header polish: 32 relevant JVM tests passed, including inline icon alignment for narrow layouts, enlarged text and RTL; Detekt, ktlint and Android lint passed; updated debug build installed on the connected device.
  • 2,801 JVM tests passed, including RSS repair, sticky identity, conditional GET, release hydration, activation baselines, source switching, chronological playback continuation, consent and restore regressions.
  • 47 Node checker and backup tests, including oldest-first large feeds, aborted/oversized reads, Atom attribute order, XML release-key decoding, non-media entries, grouped listeners, quiet activation and no RSS catalogue fallback.
  • Review regressions cover foreign URL deliveries, consent changes before display, interrupted publication and cleanup, restart with no enabled shows, an existing restore sentinel, legacy cleanup, corrupt/failed journal writes, URL-scoped backups and resource-based accessibility assertions.
  • Detekt, ktlint, merged Kover gate, Android lint, architecture scripts and dependency guards.
  • Debug APK built and installed on the connected device.
  • Live shared-checker-to-device RSS notification delivery after deployment.
  • Required remote checks green before merge.

Notes

Add RSS now uses one simple feed-link instruction. Feed-link publication is explained only when enabling notifications, and Home uses a small inline RSS icon in place of the source badge.

Review fixes isolate RSS sync failures, persist failed-refresh cooldowns, handle consent write failures without implicit reactivation, localize disclosure copy, and test the ViewModel notification actions through plain JVM helpers. Current master is incorporated; both notification entry points require RSS disclosure and retain its feed URL, while suspended preference saves preserve the latest independent toggle choice.

Live RSS notification delivery remains unverified: the updated scheduled checker takes effect after this PR is merged. Device UI automation was not run. All edits and Git operations were confined to the feature worktree; the primary checkout was not changed.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • RSS subscriptions now support episode browsing, playback, automatic downloads, and release notifications alongside catalog-based shows.
    • RSS feeds refresh during subscription sync, and incoming episode alerts can match saved-feed items without a Podcast Index lookup.
    • Enabling RSS notifications requires confirming that the feed URL and episode details may be shared. Consent is stored on the device and tied to the feed URL.
    • Restored RSS subscriptions retain their show identity and feed settings. RSS shows are also identified in the selected-show header.
  • Changes
    • RSS notifications remain optional and separate from automatic downloads. No periodic on-device notification polling has been added.
    • RSS refreshes use conditional requests where available, with retry delays after failed automatic refreshes.

Walkthrough

This change adds an RSS-backed episode catalog and connects RSS subscriptions to refresh, notification, auto-download, Smart Downloads, and push hydration flows. It also adds feed-URL-bound notification consent and updates the public RSS checker and backup handling.

Changes

Pure RSS parity

Layer / File(s) Summary
RSS catalog routing and refresh
core/domain/..., core/model/..., core/database/..., core/rss/..., core/catalog/..., app/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/AppContainer.kt, ARCHITECTURE.md
SubscribedEpisodeCatalog routes catalog operations by RSS podcast ID. RssEpisodeCatalog reads and refreshes RSS episodes, uses conditional GET when applicable, and persists eligible results. Subscription sync includes RSS episode tips. RSS episode IDs and saved show identities are retained.
RSS notification consent and restore
core/catalog/..., core/rss/..., feature/info/..., feature/settings/..., app/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/AppContainer.kt
RSS notification enablement requires consent for the current HTTPS feed URL. Consent is stored on-device, and RSS notification registrations use device-specific keys. Restore paths preserve RSS podcast IDs. The info screen presents disclosure before notification activation.
RSS episode automation and hydration
core/downloads/..., core/database/..., app/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/fcm/..., app/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/AppContainer.kt
RSS episodes can be discovered and resolved for auto-download. Existing RSS episodes are seeded as handled during activation. RSS push hydration skips Podcast Index baseline loading and uses saved-feed catalog matches.
Public RSS checker and backups
scripts/check-new-episodes*, scripts/backfill-tracked-podcast-feeds-lib*, scripts/README.md, scripts/data/tracked-podcasts-backups/README.md
The checker groups RSS registrations by show, resolves RSS releases, and stores hashed pure-RSS episode keys. Feed reads consume the full response within the size limit. Weekly backups group public RSS metadata and omit device registration IDs.
RSS identity and show presentation
feature/home/..., feature/info/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/feature/info/PodcastInfoEpisodeList.kt
The selected-show header displays an RSS icon when source metadata or the canonical ID identifies an RSS show. Release automation is enabled in the episode toolbar for all shows.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 76b25

Devices following different feeds under one saved show can receive an episode alert for a feed they did not approve. Separate delivery by accepted feed URL before merging; also correct the checker’s baseline documentation.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 76b25

The change adds meaningful privacy controls for imported feeds, but notification identity and opt-out recovery have unresolved design weaknesses. Listeners sharing a saved show identity can receive alerts from a different accepted feed URL, and interrupted opt-out can leave a feed registered for continued checking and backup. The demonstrated scope is feed processing and notifications, not credential theft or administrative compromise.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Consent and registrations are URL-specific, but release state and notification topics are keyed only by preserved show ID. Restore and refresh can retain that ID across URL changes, allowing independently accepted URLs under one identity. The checker selects the first usable registration and broadcasts its release to all listeners on the shared topic. Initial Android notification presentation checks subscription and notification flags, not a successful feed-specific match. When registered URLs represent different content, a listener can receive an alert outside its accepted feed scope. Exact local hydration limits subsequent episode acceptance, but does not gate the initial alert. This RSS-only exposure is newly reachable in the PR.
  • Medium · security · inferred: RSS disable and unsubscribe persist local revocation before removing the remote registration. Interruption between those steps, or an unsuccessful remote deletion, can leave the previously accepted feed eligible for shared polling and future backup publication. Remote database Tasks are not acknowledged by the repository, and the inspected reconciliation path scans only notification-enabled rows and is sentinel-gated. No durable cleanup obligation was established for disabled or unsubscribed rows. Local flags suppress ordinary alert presentation after disable, and the feed was originally confirmed public; the concern is continued processing after opt-out, not demonstrated disclosure of an unaccepted private URL. The asynchronous pattern predates this PR for catalog shows, but RSS-only feed registration and its revocation lifecycle are new.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The notification identity concern affects listeners sharing one preserved RSS show ID, not demonstrated arbitrary-show or administrative access. Stale registrations additionally affect shared polling and repository backup processing. Effective cross-user database mutation authority remains unknown because deployed authorization rules were not verified.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Feed-controlled release content can cross into another listener's initial notification when differing accepted URLs share a saved show ID. The checker chooses one registration and sends to the common topic; the receiving handler presents payload details before requiring exact hydration. This does not establish arbitrary private-feed access or automatic acceptance of a foreign episode.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — For RSS-only hydration, push data cannot replace the saved fetch URL. Hydration resolves catalog keys against that show's storage, and the worker requires a local episode before accepting the release or updating the notification. These controls constrain the shared-topic concern after initial presentation.
  • observed — Android fetching preserves HTTPS input validation, bounded response reading, and safe XML parser settings. The Node checker bounds streamed bodies and checks the final response URL's scheme after following redirects. Arbitrary HTTPS fetching existed before this PR; these controls do not establish destination ownership, private-address isolation, or effective runtime egress restrictions.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — RSS download admission retains activation-time and playable-audio checks. Ledger activation transactionally seeds existing RSS episodes as handled, preventing archive bootstrap; pending records remain replayable. Scheduling awaits unique-work admission and preserves network constraints, while the background gate denies unknown permission or device state and can cancel guarded work after policy changes. These are bounded controls, not proof of every transfer-worker terminal state.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Align notification routing and release-state identity with the accepted feed scope, or define an explicit authoritative-URL policy for registrations sharing a show ID. Gate initial RSS alert presentation on that identity check rather than relying on later hydration.
  • proposed — Persist registration cleanup obligations before completing local opt-out, acknowledge remote removal, and reconcile outstanding cleanup independently of notification-enabled rows. A registration expiry mechanism could additionally bound orphaned registrations after device loss.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 9.84% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 254 functions across 54 files. (9 skipped: 9 unsupported.)

Full details: Unresolved Review Threads

Explanation

Two current review findings remain outstanding: one Trivial finding in SelectedShowTitleTest.kt and one Minor finding in scripts/README.md. Neither is marked resolved or explicitly dismissed. The nine posted CodeRabbit threads are marked resolved, but that does not resolve these current findings.

Resolution

Resolve or explicitly dismiss both current findings before merge. Update SelectedShowTitleTest.kt to obtain the RSS content description from its string resource in both lookups. Update scripts/README.md to clarify that a catalogue row with lastEpisodeId but no lastRssKey can notify on its first RSS check when the newest feed item matches a different current Podcast Index episode ID.
