The ess:specifying skill's minimal example started a new specification on format: ess/1, and an agent copied it into a new repository while ess 0.52.0 implements up to ess/20.

  • A new specification starts on the newest ess release (checked against the latest GitHub release; ess:upgrade when behind) and the newest format that release implements.
  • The minimal example uses ess/20; it validates unchanged under every format ess/1…ess/20 with ess 0.52.0 (checked one by one).
  • Until ess can list its formats (CLI: show which specification formats a build implements, and what each format added ess#460), the unsupported_format_version refusal is the way to read them from the binary.
  • references/syntax.md keeps ess/1 and now says it is the lowest header each construct needs.

Local gate: task check exit 0 (valid: 17 eval case(s), valid: marketplace b10x, 5 plugin(s)).

- specifying: a new specification starts on the newest ess release
  (check against the latest GitHub release, upgrade through ess:upgrade)
  and the newest format that release implements, never on ess/1. The
  minimal example now uses ess/20; it validates unchanged under every
  format from ess/1 to ess/20 with ess 0.52.0.
- How to read the implemented formats from the binary today (the
  unsupported_format_version refusal lists them), with beyond10x/ess#460
  for a listing command and a format changelog.
- references/syntax.md says its ess/1 header is the lowest each
  construct needs, not the header to start a document on.
- An agent started a new repository on ess/1 by copying the old example.
- ess 0.53.0 (released 2026-10-05) implements formats up to ess/22;
  the example validates unchanged under ess/20, ess/21 and ess/22.
