Purpose

The test runner docs still ask for Node.js 20.x. That version no longer works.

  • On 2026-09-08, wordpress-develop trunk raised its requirement to Node.js >=24.18.0 and npm >=11.16.0 ("Build/Test Tools: Upgrade Node.js to 24.x").
  • wordpress-develop/.npmrc sets engine-strict = true.
  • prepare.php clones trunk and runs npm install && npm run build.

So a host that follows the docs installs Node.js 20, and prepare.php then fails at npm install with an engine error.

Change

  • Requirements: NodeJS 20.x → NodeJS 24.x / npm 11.x, with the reason.
  • Install commands: setup_20.x → setup_24.x.

WordPress trunk raised its Node.js requirement to 24.18 (npm 11.16) on
2026-09-08, and wordpress-develop sets engine-strict=true, so npm install
in prepare.php now fails on Node.js 20.

Related: #347 adds a README section that explains why NodeJS is needed. It covers engine-strict and the Gutenberg build step.
