fix(release): add changelogTitle config to prevent changelog header orphaning - #30
wyre-agent-fleet[bot] wants to merge 4 commits into
Conversation
…rphaning The @semantic-release/changelog plugin's changelogTitle option was unset, so prepare.js never recognized the existing title/preamble block in CHANGELOG.md and kept prepending new release notes above it, pushing the header further down the file on every release. - .releaserc.json: convert the bare "@semantic-release/changelog" plugin entry to array form with changelogTitle set to "# Changelog" so future releases insert new entries below the header instead of above it. - CHANGELOG.md: move the orphaned header block (title + description) back to the top of the file, above the real version history. Same fix pattern as WYRE-AI/node-domotz#49.

…ease.mjs
The prior commit on this branch added changelogTitle to .releaserc.json,
but this repo's real release mechanism (prepare-release.mjs, invoked by
release.yml's PREPARE-mode step) calls semanticRelease({ dryRun: true }),
which skips semantic-release's own prepare lifecycle step entirely -- so
@semantic-release/changelog's changelogTitle-aware insert logic never runs
here. changelogTitle was inert; the header-position fix would have been
undone on the very next release through this pipeline.
insertReleaseNotes() now detects an existing title/preamble/Unreleased
scaffold (by finding the first real release heading -- "## [<digit>" or
a bare "# X.Y.Z " -- and treating anything before it as scaffold to
preserve above new notes) and inserts new release notes below that
scaffold instead of at column zero. Falls back to the original unqualified
prepend for any repo/state with no such scaffold, so this is a no-op for
every other case.
Verified against this exact file (not a parallel reimplementation): ran a
real test importing insertReleaseNotes from this script with
semantic-release actually installed, covering 6 cases (no-header-repo
parity with the original prepend, header+Unreleased, header-without-
Unreleased, header-only/no-releases-yet, brand-new-repo/no-existing-file,
and a repeated-release idempotence check) -- all pass. Also ran this exact
script directly (node scripts/prepare-release.mjs) against this branch to
confirm the refactor (wrapping main() behind an import.meta.url guard so
insertReleaseNotes is importable without triggering a real dry run) didn't
change the script's own real behavior.
Found via CodeRabbit's CHANGES_REQUESTED on the prior commit -- flagging a
real gap in the fleet-wide changelogTitle sweep's original diagnosis.

Recognize linked # release headings.
When the first existing release uses # [2.0.0](...), headingRe does not match it. The no-match branch then appends new notes after the release history instead of placing them below the scaffold. scripts/extract-release-notes.mjs explicitly recognizes linked # headings as release sections. Add that heading shape to this matcher.

CodeRabbit catch on the previous commit: the direct-execution guard compared import.meta.url (URL-encoded -- a space becomes %20, a # becomes %23) against a naively file://-prefixed process.argv[1] (a raw filesystem path, never encoded). A checkout path containing either character would make the comparison silently false and never invoke main() at all. Reproduced directly (a path with a space: encoded comparison -> false, fileURLToPath-based comparison -> true) before applying the fix, not just read-and-trusted. CI's own checkout path doesn't contain either character today, so this was latent, not a live failure -- fixing it anyway since the safe form costs nothing.

Reviewed as the representative PR for the 11-PR Correctness: looks right.
Two findings, neither blocking, both worth a response before/alongside merge:
No concerns with the |
Adds unit coverage for scripts/prepare-release.mjs's insertReleaseNotes,
flagged in PR review as shipping with no committed test despite its own
code comment admitting the Unreleased-exclusion edge case was only caught
by an ad-hoc test during development. Covers all branches: no existing
changelog, header-only scaffold with no release headings, heading at
index 0 (no scaffold), header-plus-entries (this repo's actual shape),
the Unreleased-exclusion regression this PR fixes, and the bare
first-release heading format ("# X.Y.Z (date)", no link).
Verified as a real regression test, not just a passing assertion: reverting
the heading regex to the unqualified /^## \[/ form (the bug this PR fixes)
fails exactly the Unreleased-exclusion test and no others.

Node.js official documentation ESM import.meta.url symlink resolution process.argv[1] preserve-symlinks-main applicable current behavior
💡 Result:
**Current documented behavior:** By default, Node resolves file-based ESM modules to their real paths. So if you launch an ESM entry point through a symlink, `import.meta.url` ordinarily identifies the resolved module path, not necessarily the symlink path. Node’s ESM resolution documentation specifies real-path resolution; `import.meta.url` is the current module’s absolute `file:` URL. ([nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org/api/esm.html?utm_source=openai))
To preserve the symlink path for the **main module**, use `--preserve-symlinks-main`. It is separate from `--preserve-symlinks`; the former alone does not preserve symlinks for other imports. To preserve both, use both flags. ([nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org/api/cli.html?utm_source=openai))
`process.argv[1]` is documented as the entry-point path. **Inference:** with `--preserve-symlinks-main`, it should reflect the preserved main-module path, but the docs don’t explicitly guarantee `process.argv[1]`’s symlink behavior under that flag. ([nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org/download/release/v25.6.0/docs/api/process.html?utm_source=openai))

Normalize both entry-point paths before the direct-execution guard.
When this script runs through a symlink, Node can resolve import.meta.url to the target path while process.argv[1] retains the symlink path. The comparison then skips main(). Normalize both paths so the guard also works with --preserve-symlinks-main.

Update the direct-execution guard comparing `fileURLToPath(import.meta.url)`
with `process.argv[1]` to normalize both paths before comparison, so invoking
the script through a symlink still runs `main()`, including with
`--preserve-symlinks-main`.

Summary
@semantic-release/changelog'schangelogTitleoption was unset, soprepare.jsnever recognized the existing title/description block inCHANGELOG.mdand kept prepending new release notes above it on every release — silently pushing the header further down the file each time..releaserc.json: converted the bare"@semantic-release/changelog"plugin entry to array form withchangelogTitleset to"# Changelog", so future releases insert new entries below the header instead of above it.CHANGELOG.md: moved the orphaned header block (# Changelogtitle + one-line description) back to the top of the file, above the real version history, verbatim (no wording changes). Note this repo's header is a shorter variant than node-domotz's — no Keep-a-Changelog preamble or## [Unreleased]section exists here, so only the title + description line were moved.Same fix pattern as WYRE-AI/node-domotz#49, applied here as a follow-up across the other affected WYRE-AI node-* client repos.

Correction (2026-10-16, warden, verified independently): the "same pattern/fix as node-domotz#49" line above is wrong and should not be read as implying domotz already has equivalent header-aware logic. node-domotz#49 is a smaller, earlier, config-only fix (
.releaserc.json+1/-1,CHANGELOG.md+9/-0) — it has noscripts/prepare-release.mjschange at all. This PR (and the other 10 in this batch) carries real logic inscripts/prepare-release.mjsthat #49 never needed, because domotz is the one repo in this fleet still running a realnpx semantic-releasedirect-push pipeline where@semantic-release/changelog's ownchangelogTitleoption genuinely works — the other 11 repos use adryRun+PR-based flow where that config option is inert and the fix has to live in a custom script instead. Does not affect this PR's own correctness; see task_1791494181526_78986701 for the full writeup.
