Closes #395.

Myopic runs with unit commitment currently retain commitment rows only for the last window. At d5148dbb, write_uc_results deletes all rows for the scenario before inserting each window (data_puller.py:85). The myopic sequencer writes with append=True (myopic_sequencer.py:300), but the commitment writer never receives the flag. The sequencer's clearing lists (myopic_sequencer.py:38–67) and TableWriter.clear_scenario (table_writer.py:375) omit the commitment table.

Pass append through the capacity writer to the commitment writer. Include output_unit_commitment in scenario cleanup and myopic period cleanup, while allowing databases without that optional table. Earlier periods survive, overlapping periods are replaced, and a new scenario run clears old results. Perfect-foresight writes and MGA iteration writes retain their replacement behavior. The change does not alter optimization equations, output thresholds, units, or the database schema.

Add one regression with three periods, one generator, and two time slices. Two windows overlap in 2030. The test checks every period, row counts, and the expected online, started, and stopped capacities with pytest.approx at 1e-5, then repeats the scenario. The expectations follow from constant demand and the generator's unit capacity; no saved reference outputs are used.

With the implementation at d5148dbb, the test fails because it finds [2030, 2040] instead of [2020, 2030, 2040]. With this change it passes. The full local suite passes all 290 tests with the bundled Gurobi licence, and mypy passes all 191 source files. Ruff and the whitespace check pass. Additional local checks cover old rows outside the new horizon, unrelated scenarios, repeated perfect-foresight writes, MGA iteration replacement, and databases without the commitment output table.

CI run 39263264136 passed on every machine with fail-fast: false. Each of the nine test jobs passed all 290 tests. The type-check job passed all 191 source files.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Unit commitment results now follow the configured append behavior when capacity results are written, helping preserve results across iterative runs.
    • Unit commitment output is included in cleanup between runs and myopic periods, preventing stale results from carrying over.

Walkthrough

The unit-commitment result writer now honors append mode during myopic windows. Scenario and period cleanup include the output table and ignore its absence. A regression test runs a two-window scenario twice and checks retained periods and commitment totals.

Changes

Myopic unit-commitment output

Layer / File(s) Summary
Append-aware result writing
temoa/_internal/table_writer.py, temoa/extensions/unit_commitment/core/data_puller.py
write_results passes append through capacity-table writing to write_uc_results. The unit-commitment writer deletes existing scenario rows only when append is false.
Unit-commitment table cleanup
temoa/_internal/table_writer.py, temoa/extensions/myopic/myopic_sequencer.py
Scenario and period cleanup include output_unit_commitment. Cleanup ignores an operational error when that table is missing and re-raises other operational errors.
Myopic output regression test
tests/testing_data/uc_myopic.sql, tests/test_full_runs.py
The fixture and test cover two runs of a two-window scenario. The test checks the output periods, row counts, online capacity, starts, and stops.

Explanation

Direct issue #395 is addressed. The reviewed changes add output_unit_commitment to scenario and myopic period cleanup, pass append from write_results through write_capacity_tables to write_uc_results, and preserve replacement when append is false. The writer tolerates a missing optional commitment table. The added regression covers periods 2020, 2030, and 2040, row counts, online/start/stop values with the required tolerance, and a repeated scenario run. The supplied evidence also states that perfect-foresight and MGA replacement behavior, thresholds, units, equations, and schema remain unchanged.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #395. Production changes modify commitment-output propagation and cleanup. The SQL fixture supplies the minimal regression model. The test verifies retention, overlap replacement, values, and rerun cleanup. No unrelated optimization, schema, threshold, or unit changes are identified in the reviewed evidence.

Use a stale row before the first future period.

The first base year is 2020, so clear_results_after(2020) removes the proposed 2050 row. Add an existing 2010 period and move the first run's 2040 rows there before the second run. The foreign-key schema permits this row, while period cleanup does not remove it. The second-run assertion will then detect a broken clear_old_results() implementation.

Make the overlapping-period assertion distinguish the later window.

The fixture gives both windows the same unit-commitment totals. The current query can therefore pass when stale 2030 rows remain from the first window. It catches the original scenario-wide deletion bug because 2020 disappears, but it does not verify replacement of the overlapping period. Add a window-dependent expected value or a focused writer test for 2030 replacement.

The fix is right. I hit this in CANOE's Ontario myopic runs: output_unit_commitment kept only the last window, so 2025–2035 commitment output was lost. Passing append through write_capacity_tables to write_uc_results, and adding the table to both myopic clearing lists, is the minimal change. The repeated-run loop in the test also covers the overlap period.
