Samuel Sorial

Senior Backend Developer at Cloud Imperium Games in Montréal. I build and operate distributed services for high-throughput workloads, with a focus on scalability, data consistency, and reliability in production.

Selected work

  • ~9 million updates per day: Implemented Kafka change data capture flows into 2 downstream data stores, keeping downstream processing off the hot path.
  • 3,000 concurrent sagas: Built a BullMQ and Redis framework with custom sharding, retries, and compensating actions for partial failures.
  • Designed sharded backend services and distributed storage patterns for large, write-heavy workloads.
  • Led a migration to Redis Cluster across multiple services, adapting access patterns for sharding and horizontal scaling.
  • Designed geospatial access patterns with PostGIS and Redis GEO for high-concurrency proximity queries.

Experience and tools

I have worked on game backend services at Cloud Imperium Games since 2021, and previously built multi-tenant IoT services at Garment IO and healthcare applications at Neevi Studio.

Languages: TypeScript, JavaScript, Rust, Python
Data and messaging: Cassandra, ScyllaDB, PostgreSQL, Redis Cluster, Kafka, RabbitMQ
Infrastructure and observability: AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana
