Summary

Add OpenRouter as an explicitly selectable QCX inference provider. Existing automatic provider selection remains unchanged unless INFERENCE_PROVIDER=openrouter is set.

Implementation details

  • Add an OpenRouter adapter on https://openrouter.ai/api/v1 using the existing @ai-sdk/openai dependency and its Chat Completions model factory. This avoids sending OpenRouter requests to OpenAI’s Responses API.
  • Route shared QCX language-model calls through OpenRouter in explicit mode, retaining the existing streaming, tool-call, structured-output, and image-input workflows when the selected OpenRouter model supports those capabilities.
  • Allow separate text and image-capable models through OPENROUTER_MODEL and OPENROUTER_VISION_MODEL. Defaults use openai/gpt-4o; the provider reports a clear configuration error if OpenRouter is selected without OPENROUTER_API_KEY.
  • Route document ingestion and retrieval embeddings through the same provider selection. The OpenRouter embedding default is the existing openai/text-embedding-ada-002, preserving QCX’s current embedding model and the database’s 1536-dimensional vector schema. Changing this model would require re-embedding stored document chunks (and updating vector dimensions if needed).
  • Skip the Gemini-only Google Search grounding shortcut in explicit OpenRouter mode so it does not bypass the configured provider. The geospatial tool continues through its existing mapping/MCP path.
  • Document the server-side environment variables in .env.local.example and the README. No API keys are added to the repository.

Configuration

Set these in the server runtime/deployment environment:

INFERENCE_PROVIDER=openrouter
OPENROUTER_API_KEY=your_openrouter_api_key
OPENROUTER_MODEL=openai/gpt-4o
OPENROUTER_VISION_MODEL=openai/gpt-4o
OPENROUTER_EMBEDDING_MODEL=openai/text-embedding-ada-002

OPENROUTER_SITE_URL and OPENROUTER_APP_NAME optionally set OpenRouter attribution headers. The chat model can be changed to another OpenRouter model slug; choose a model that supports the capabilities used by QCX. Keep the embedding model unchanged unless performing an embedding migration.

Validation

  • bun tests-unit/openrouter.test.ts passes, covering missing-key validation, default and configured chat models, vision-model selection, and the compatible ada-002 embedding model.
  • The focused TypeScript check for the adapter and unit test passes.
  • git diff --check passes.
  • The full application typecheck still reports five errors in unchanged Google Maps files (components/map/google-geojson-layer.tsx and components/map/map-3d.tsx). No diagnostics were reported in the files changed by this PR.
  • A live OpenRouter inference request was not run because no OpenRouter API key is available in this environment.

Deployment note

This code makes OpenRouter selectable but does not provision production secrets. Add INFERENCE_PROVIDER=openrouter and OPENROUTER_API_KEY to the deployment’s server-side environment before enabling it in production.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds OpenRouter as a selectable chat and embedding provider. It adds API key validation, model defaults, optional attribution headers, and environment configuration examples. Document ingestion and retrieval use provider-aware embeddings, and OpenRouter requests bypass the Gemini Google Maps grounding branch.

An authentication lookup failure can prevent a chat request from reaching the explicitly configured OpenRouter provider. Move provider selection ahead of that lookup; the current evidence indicates a bounded risk rather than a general outage.

Resolve OpenRouter before the preference lookup.

getSelectedModel() calls auth() before its error handling. If that call rejects during a chat request, getModel() exits before selecting OpenRouter. Move the explicit provider branch before getSelectedModel().
