fix(nvca): stop a rejected worker.timeouts value from crash-looping the operator - #2498

…he operator A negative duration (e.g. heartbeatInterval=-1s) is syntactically valid, so it reaches cfg.Validate() inside DecodeConfig, which correctly rejects it. That failure was wrapped as a FatalError, so the operator exited, restarted, read the same invalid ConfigMap, and exited again. Classify this one case narrowly (isAgentTimeConfigError, matching the validator's own message) and return it as a plain error instead: not fatal, so the operator stays up and just logs and retries; not invalidAgentConfigError either, since the rejected value was never applied and the running agent is unaffected, so AgentStatus is left alone. Also add an optionalDuration schema definition for the 8 worker.timeouts fields, mirroring the existing optionalResourceQuantity pattern, so helm template rejects a negative interval immediately, by field name, before it ever reaches the operator.

- Line 1663: Update AgentTimeConfig.Validate to return a typed validation error
and change isAgentTimeConfigError to identify it with errors. As, rather than
matching text in err.Error(). Preserve DecodeConfig’s wrapped error identity so
the typed error remains detectable.

Accept all nonnegative Go duration forms in the Helm schema, detect negative agent timeouts with a typed error instead of string matching, make the schema test portable across Helm versions, and drop private tracker IDs.

The go-lib codegen freshness check regenerated deepcopy methods for the new error type. An error type does not need them, so opt it out of the package-wide deepcopy-gen.

TL;DR
A rejected
worker.timeoutsvalue (e.g.heartbeatInterval: -1s) used to crash-loop the operator instead of being rejected. It's now caught athelm upgradetime by the chart schema, and as an operator-side backstop it's logged and retried without exiting or touchingAgentStatus.Additional Details
AgentTimeConfig.Validate()correctly rejects a negative interval, but that check runs insideDecodeConfig, called fromgetRawAgentConfigToMerge. AnyDecodeConfigfailure other than a resource-quantity decode error was wrapped asFatalError, so the operator exited, restarted, read the same invalidagent-config-mergeConfigMap, and exited again.helm upgrade --waitjust timed out with no field name. What changed:
nvcaagent_reconcile.go:isAgentTimeConfigErrornarrowly matchesAgentTimeConfig.Validate()'s own message. A matched error is returned as a plain, non-fatal error: the operator logs it and retries on the next resync. It's deliberately notinvalidAgentConfigErroreither — the rejected value was never applied, so the running agent andAgentStatusare unaffected. A blanket match on the validate stage was too broad: it also caught an unrelatedworkload.stargateQUICInsecure/transportTLS.trustModeconflict that two existing tests require stay fatal.values.schema.json: newoptionalDurationdefinition (mirrorsoptionalResourceQuantity), applied to all 8worker.timeouts.*fields, sohelm template/helm upgraderejects a negative interval immediately, by field name, before the value ever reaches the operator. For the Reviewer
getRawAgentConfigToMerge's classification of the threeDecodeConfigfailure stages (parse / decode / validate).isAgentTimeConfigError's narrow string match and why it's scoped that way (see the TransportTLS test note above). For QA
go test ./pkg/operator/reconcile/...passes (two pre-existing, environment-only failures excluded: sandboxedos.Exitpatching, missingKUBEBUILDER_ASSETS— both fail identically on unmodifiedmain).deploy/helm/nvca-operator/tests/worker_timeouts_schema_test.shpasses; wired intobuild-test.yml.helm template ... --set worker.timeouts.heartbeatInterval=-1s) — now rejected with the field name.Summary by CodeRabbit
