What does this PR do?

Type of change: Bug fix

broadcast/allgather in modelopt/torch/utils/distributed.py and the Megatron expert-parallel (EP) export gather handled peer-supplied buffers with unrestricted pickle (torch.load(..., weights_only=False) and torch.distributed.gather_object), so a compromised rank could execute code on the others.

  • _deserialize and the EP export load use torch.load(..., weights_only=True), passed explicitly so TORCH_FORCE_NO_WEIGHTS_ONLY_LOAD=1 cannot re-enable pickle.
  • The EP export gathers raw bytes with a new gather_bytes (root-only, chunked tensor gather) instead of gather_object, which unpickles the outer object before any restricted load.
  • Hparam/TracedHp (broadcast by the Megatron pruning path) are registered as safe globals, and Hparam pickles its default importance estimator as a marker instead of a bound method (which needs getattr).
  • Not covered: DistributedProcessGroup.get_dist_syncd_obj uses all_gather_object; left for a follow-up.

Why not utils/serialization.py::safe_load, JSON or safetensors? safe_load deliberately honors TORCH_FORCE_NO_WEIGHTS_ONLY_LOAD so users can trust a local checkpoint; trusting a local file must not also trust every peer, so peer payloads pin weights_only=True. Payloads are small heterogeneous Python objects (bools, dicts, tensors, hparams), which JSON/safetensors cannot carry without a larger redesign.

Usage

No API change. Custom classes sent through broadcast/allgather must be registered with torch.serialization.add_safe_globals.

Testing

  • tests/unit/torch/utils/test_distributed.py: a __reduce__ gadget is rejected by _deserialize, with and without TORCH_FORCE_NO_WEIGHTS_ONLY_LOAD=1 (fails when the fix is reverted); a TracedHp subclass (DepthHparam) round-trips through _serialize/_deserialize.
  • tests/gpu/torch/utils/test_distributed.py, run locally on 2 GPUs (8 passed): real broadcast/allgather round trip (incl. TracedHp); gather_bytes (uneven sizes, empty sender, small chunks); gather_state_dicts (the EP export's gather-and-load) accepts ordinary state dicts on the root only and rejects a gadget sent from a non-root rank without running it, with and without the env override.
    • The gather_* tests need 2 ranks and use need_2_gpus, so they skip on CI's single-GPU gpu runner; checked locally with CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=0 (4 passed, 4 skipped).
  • tests/unit/torch/{nas,opt}: all pass locally except 4 opt/plugins collection errors that also occur without this change (broken package metadata in the local env).
  • CI: gpu_megatron (real Megatron EP export and NAS/prune paths, which the local env cannot import), gpu_vllm, linux unit and example jobs passed on 1661191.

Before your PR is "Ready for review"

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Distributed workflows can gather byte payloads and state dictionaries at a destination rank.
  • Security

    • Distributed data transfers use restricted deserialization to help prevent unsafe object execution, including when a PyTorch environment setting would otherwise allow unrestricted loading.
    • Expert-parallel exports transfer data without loading pickled objects.
  • Compatibility

    • Distributed broadcasts and allgathers reject unregistered custom classes. Register classes with PyTorch’s safe-globals mechanism before using them in these operations.
    • Hyperparameters and traced hyperparameters are registered for safe PyTorch checkpoint loading.

Drop weights_only=False from the broadcast/allgather helpers and the Megatron
expert-parallel export gather so a malicious peer cannot run code via pickle.
Register Hparam/TracedHp as safe globals and make Hparam pickle without a
bound-method importance estimator.

📝 Walkthrough

Distributed payload loading now uses weights-only deserialization. New byte-gathering utilities gather state dictionaries, and Megatron expert-parallel export uses them. Safe-global registrations support custom classes. Tests cover gathering behavior and pickle-gadget rejection.

Changes: Safe deserialization and distributed gathering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Safe custom-class loading
modelopt/torch/nas/traced_hp.py, modelopt/torch/nas/hparams/concat.py, modelopt/torch/nas/hparams/container.py, modelopt/torch/nas/plugins/megatron.py, modelopt/torch/opt/hparam.py, tests/unit/torch/utils/test_distributed.py
Hyperparameter classes are registered as safe globals. Hparam state hooks replace and restore its default importance estimator. Unit tests cover safe loading and DepthHparam round-tripping.
Restricted loading and byte gathering
modelopt/torch/utils/distributed.py, CHANGELOG.rst, tests/gpu/torch/utils/test_distributed.py, tests/unit/torch/utils/test_distributed.py
Distributed deserialization uses weights_only=True. New utilities gather byte strings in chunks and yield gathered state dictionaries on the destination. Tests cover distributed object operations, gathering, and pickle-gadget rejection, including when TORCH_FORCE_NO_WEIGHTS_ONLY_LOAD is set. The changelog records the loading restriction and safe-global requirement.
Export integration and validation
modelopt/torch/export/unified_export_megatron.py
Megatron expert-parallel export gathers state dictionaries through gather_state_dicts and merges gathered expert states on the receiving rank.

Bot review (gpt-6.1-sol) — DM the bot to share feedback.

Changes requested: the Megatron gather still unpickles peer input before the restricted loader, and environment overrides can disable both new loading protections.

Needs action:

  • Replace gather_object in _grouped_mlp_slicing with a root-only tensor/byte collective and add a malicious-peer regression; see inline comment.
  • Set weights_only=True explicitly at both changed load sites and test gadget rejection with TORCH_FORCE_NO_WEIGHTS_ONLY_LOAD=1.
  • Explain the serialization choice in the PR body versus existing utils/serialization.py::safe_load and plain-data JSON/safetensors, including the distinction between trusted-checkpoint overrides and untrusted peer payloads.

No action needed:

  • Existing test assertions remain intact; additions cover ordinary collective payloads and direct gadget rejection.
  • Tests were inspected, not executed.

Changes requested: the unsafe gather and environment override are fixed, but the previously requested malicious-peer regression for EP export remains missing.

Needs action:

  • 💬 Author replied: raw-byte gathering has a two-GPU test — still add a malicious-peer regression through _grouped_mlp_slicing or a shared production gather-and-load helper, including the environment override; see inline comment.

No action needed:

  • ✔️ Resolved since the last review: unrestricted outer gathering, implicit weights_only, serialization design rationale, and compatibility documentation.
  • The PR body reasonably distinguishes peer loading from safe_load checkpoint overrides and explains rejecting JSON/safetensors for heterogeneous payloads.
  • Existing test assertions remain intact; tests were inspected, not executed.

LGTM: prior security concerns are resolved; human sign-off remains for the justified edits to existing test files.

Needs action:

  • Confirm the test-file edits: imports are updated for the new helpers, security regressions are added, and existing assertions remain intact.

No action needed:

  • ✔️ Resolved since the last review: unsafe outer gathering, environment-override bypass, missing EP malicious-peer coverage, serialization rationale, and compatibility documentation.
  • The EP export now uses the tested gather_state_dicts helper. Tests cover non-root gadget rejection without side effects, both environment settings, ordinary state dictionaries, and root-only results.
  • The design reasonably rejects checkpoint-oriented safe_load, JSON/safetensors, and pickle-based object collectives for this peer-loading boundary.
  • Tests were inspected, not executed.

Stream serialized EP payloads from disk-backed storage.

gather_state_dicts does not bound host memory as documented. gather_bytes allocates a complete serialized payload for every rank on the destination before iteration starts. The EP loop then retains each decoded dictionary in self._state_dict. Peak memory can therefore include the full decoded expert state and all remaining serialized payloads. Large EP exports can exceed host memory.

Store each gathered payload in a temporary file, then load one file at a time. This keeps only one serialized payload in host memory while preserving the existing eager collective.

### What does this PR do?

Type of change: Bug fix

`broadcast`/`allgather` in `modelopt/torch/utils/distributed.py` and the
Megatron expert-parallel (EP) export gather handled peer-supplied
buffers with unrestricted pickle (`torch.load(..., weights_only=False)`
and `torch.distributed.gather_object`), so a compromised rank could
execute code on the others.

- `_deserialize` and the EP export load use `torch.load(...,
weights_only=True)`, passed explicitly so
`TORCH_FORCE_NO_WEIGHTS_ONLY_LOAD=1` cannot re-enable pickle.
- The EP export gathers raw bytes with a new `gather_bytes` (root-only,
chunked tensor gather) instead of `gather_object`, which unpickles the
outer object before any restricted load.
- `Hparam`/`TracedHp` (broadcast by the Megatron pruning path) are
registered as safe globals, and `Hparam` pickles its default importance
estimator as a marker instead of a bound method (which needs `getattr`).
- Not covered: `DistributedProcessGroup.get_dist_syncd_obj` uses
`all_gather_object`; left for a follow-up.

**Why not `utils/serialization.py::safe_load`, JSON or safetensors?**
`safe_load` deliberately honors `TORCH_FORCE_NO_WEIGHTS_ONLY_LOAD` so
users can trust a local checkpoint; trusting a local file must not also
trust every peer, so peer payloads pin `weights_only=True`. Payloads are
small heterogeneous Python objects (bools, dicts, tensors, hparams),
which JSON/safetensors cannot carry without a larger redesign.

### Usage

No API change. Custom classes sent through `broadcast`/`allgather` must
be registered with `torch.serialization.add_safe_globals`.

### Testing

- `tests/unit/torch/utils/test_distributed.py`: a `__reduce__` gadget is
rejected by `_deserialize`, with and without
`TORCH_FORCE_NO_WEIGHTS_ONLY_LOAD=1` (fails when the fix is reverted); a
`TracedHp` subclass (`DepthHparam`) round-trips through
`_serialize`/`_deserialize`.
- `tests/gpu/torch/utils/test_distributed.py`, run locally on 2 GPUs (8
passed): real `broadcast`/`allgather` round trip (incl. `TracedHp`);
`gather_bytes` (uneven sizes, empty sender, small chunks);
`gather_state_dicts` (the EP export's gather-and-load) accepts ordinary
state dicts on the root only and rejects a gadget sent from a non-root
rank without running it, with and without the env override.
- The `gather_*` tests need 2 ranks and use `need_2_gpus`, so they skip
on CI's single-GPU `gpu` runner; checked locally with
`CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=0` (4 passed, 4 skipped).
- `tests/unit/torch/{nas,opt}`: all pass locally except 4 `opt/plugins`
collection errors that also occur without this change (broken package
metadata in the local env).
- CI: `gpu_megatron` (real Megatron EP export and NAS/prune paths, which
the local env cannot import), `gpu_vllm`, `linux` unit and example jobs
passed on 1661191.

### Before your PR is "*Ready for review*"

- Is this change backward compatible?: ❌ objects of unregistered classes
sent via `broadcast`/`allgather` now fail to load; register them with
`add_safe_globals`.
- If you copied code from any other sources or added a new PIP
dependency, did you follow guidance in `CONTRIBUTING.md`: N/A
- Did you write any new necessary tests?: ✅
- Did you update Changelog?: ✅
- Did you get Claude approval on this PR?: ❌

## Summary by CodeRabbit

* **New Features**
* Distributed workflows can gather byte payloads and state dictionaries
at a destination rank.

* **Security**
* Distributed data transfers use restricted deserialization to help
prevent unsafe object execution, including when a PyTorch environment
setting would otherwise allow unrestricted loading.
* Expert-parallel exports transfer data without loading pickled objects.

* **Compatibility**
* Distributed broadcasts and allgathers reject unregistered custom
classes. Register classes with PyTorch’s safe-globals mechanism before
using them in these operations.
* Hyperparameters and traced hyperparameters are registered for safe
PyTorch checkpoint loading.
