Comment: the blog is technically accurate (numbers, 126-candidate sweep, config schema and :ref:quant-cfg`` all check out), but it ships a reproduce command pointing at a recipe that doesn't exist plus several typos in public-facing prose.
Needs action:
- Fix the
--recipepath indocs/source/announcements/local-hessian.rst;modelopt_recipes/models/Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B/does not exist today (onlyQwen3.8-2.4T-A95B), so the command fails as written. Land after #2363 or drop it. - Correct the typos/grammar flagged inline: "critieria", "exhuastive", the double-"while" sentence, "In Table 1 we compares ... dor weights".
- Repoint the "Model Optimizer Local-Hessian code" link at
local_hessian_calibrate; it currently targetslayerwise_calibrate. - Run
sphinx-buildbefore merge:announcements.cssis loaded site-wide viahtml_css_files, so the new unscopeddiv.math/.yue .math-wrapperrules restyle equations on every docs page, not just announcements.
No action needed:
- Docs-only change, so no tests expected; table averages are internally consistent with the reported scores.

Comment: the prose fixes landed, but the blog still documents a --recipe path that does not exist, and the PR now carries an undescribed backward-breaking calibration default flip.
Needs action:
- Fix or drop the
--recipepath indocs/source/announcements/local-hessian.rst:291; onlymodelopt_recipes/models/Qwen/Qwen3.8-2.4T-A95B/exists, so the reproduce command fails as written (land after #2363). - Justify or scope the
get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layerdefault flip inmodelopt/torch/quantization/config.py— four shipped max/mse layerwise recipes had to be pinned back tofalse, which argues for keeping it per-algorithm (GPTQ/Local-Hessian) instead of global. - Update the PR body (still says "Documentation only; no code paths change") or split the config/mode/model_calib default change into its own PR.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review: the prose typos, the
layerwise_calibrate→local_hessian_calibrate:func:anchor, the block-diagonal wording, and the site-wide CSS check (author confirmed verified). - Test edits in
test_config_validation.pyare justified by the default change; coverage is preserved.

Comment: the missing recipe now ships in this PR, but the global get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer default flip is still unscoped and the PR body still describes this as docs-only.
Needs action:
- 💬 Author replied "no A/B tests — default recommendation from our GPTQ understanding" — still needs the flip scoped to
GPTQCalibConfig/LocalHessianCalibConfig(or evidence), since this PR pinsfalseback into four shipped max/mse recipes, which argues the new global default is wrong for them. - Update the PR body: it still says "Documentation only; no code paths change" while the PR changes
config.py/mode.py/model_calib.pydefaults and adds three recipes — or split the default change out. - Rename or clearly mark
modelopt_recipes/models/Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B/ptq/nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_max.yaml; it has nometadata, so--recipe .../nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_maxfails even though it sits beside a loadable recipe.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review: the nonexistent
--recipepath (recipe now shipped), the prose typos, thelocal_hessian_calibrateanchor, the block-diagonal wording, and the site-wide CSS check. test_config_validation.pyedits are justified by the default change; coverage is preserved, and shipped recipes stay covered by the existing load smoke tests.

The default is now True for every layerwise algorithm, but this same PR adds get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer: false to four shipped max/mse recipes to keep their behaviour — and the description right below still says "We recommend setting this to True for GPTQ and Local-Hessian". That combination reads as "the new global default is wrong for max/mse". Consider restoring the per-algorithm default (move the removed _gptq_qdq_default validator onto GPTQCalibConfig + LocalHessianCalibConfig) so AWQ/SmoothQuant/max/mse layerwise users aren't silently changed without A/B data.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
🤖 Bot comment.
Thanks for the careful read, but we're keeping the global default as True here — this is intentional rather than an oversight.
The reasoning is a design choice about what the layerwise abstraction is for, not an empirical claim. Layerwise calibration exists principally to serve GPTQ and Local-Hessian, whose error propagation depends on prior-layer QDQ activations, so get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer=True is the behavior that matches what enabling layerwise is normally asking for. Making that the default of LayerwiseConfig keeps the abstraction coherent rather than requiring every principal consumer to opt back into it.
On the four shipped recipes pinning false: that is the intended reading of them, not evidence against the default. max/mse are algorithm-specific exceptions that want full-precision activations for subsequent layers, so they state that explicitly in the recipe. They remain free to use layerwise calibration; they just carry the flag.
To be straight about what this is and isn't: we have no A/B data, and we are not claiming True produces better quality for max/mse. It is a default chosen from the design intent of layerwise calibration. Because it does change behavior for existing layerwise max/mse/AWQ/SmoothQuant users who never set the flag, it is documented as a backward-breaking change in CHANGELOG.rst, and setting get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer=False restores the previous behavior.

This file is an $import fragment (a bare QuantizeConfig, no metadata/quantize), but it is named like a recipe and sits next to one in models/<org>/<id>/ptq/. --recipe models/Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B/ptq/nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_max — the max baseline the blog compares against — fails with a metadata.recipe_type error. Other fragments in recipe dirs use a distinguishing name (*.quant_cfg.yaml, disabled_quantizers.yaml); please follow that, or promote this to a real recipe with its own metadata.

🤖 Bot comment.
Leaving this one as-is. The file is deliberately an internal $import fragment, not a recipe that was accidentally left unloadable.
nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_max.yaml is a bare QuantizeConfig holding the precision assignment exported by the AutoQuantize sweep. Its only consumer is the sibling nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_local_hessian.yaml, which imports it as its quantize base. That sibling is the user-facing, runnable entry point, and it is the one documented in modelopt_recipes/ptq.md and referenced by the blog. So the absence of metadata.recipe_type is expected: the fragment is not meant to be a supported top-level --recipe target, and --recipe .../nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_max failing is the correct outcome rather than a regression.
That said, your point about signalling isn't wrong — a reader scanning the directory can't tell the two apart by name. I'm not claiming the current placement is beyond improvement. If maintainers want stronger internal-fragment signalling here, naming or placement can be revisited separately; I'd rather do that as its own change than fold it into this PR.
Leaving the thread open for maintainers to weigh in.

[IMPORTANT Compatibility] Flipping this to a global True (and deleting GPTQCalibConfig._gptq_qdq_default) changes behavior for max/mse layerwise runs, and the field description now contradicts the default it documents.
What the diff shows. Of the six shipped recipes with layerwise.enable: true, four had to be given get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer: false in this PR (general/ptq/nvfp4_experts_only-kv_fp8_layerwise{,_export,_offload}, model_type/minimax_m3_vl/ptq/mxfp8_nvfp4_experts); only the GPTQ and local-Hessian recipes want true. So the new global default is the wrong value for the majority of in-tree layerwise users, and every out-of-tree recipe or mtq.quantize(..., {"algorithm": {"method": "max", "layerwise": {"enable": True}}}) call silently gets the flipped behavior on upgrade.
Why it matters. Beyond the value change, this drops a property those four recipes rely on: with false, layerwise max/mse produces the same _amax as the equivalent non-layerwise pass, so layerwise.enable: true is a pure memory/time optimization. With true it is no longer amax-equivalent — the same recipe with enable: true vs false now yields different scales, which is a surprising thing for a knob whose own description (line 719-721) sells it as a per-layer execution strategy. The CHANGELOG.rst entry does declare the break, so this is not undeclared; the concern is the direction.
Also, the description is self-contradictory as written. Line 729 says If True (default) and line 733 says We recommend setting this to True for GPTQ and Local-Hessian — i.e. the field ships the value it implicitly does not recommend for max/mse, and gives the reader no guidance for those algorithms.
Suggested fix — pick one:
- Keep the per-algorithm default and just widen it, instead of flipping globally. Rather than the deleted per-class validator, put the default on the algorithm config base as a class var so
gptq/local_hessianopt in andmax/msekeepFalse:
class QuantizeAlgorithmConfig(ModeloptBaseConfig):
# Algorithms whose per-layer objective needs prior-layer QDQ activations.
_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer_default: ClassVar[bool] = False
@model_validator(mode="after")
def _apply_qdq_default(self):
if "get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer" not in self.layerwise.model_fields_set:
self.layerwise = self.layerwise.model_copy(
update={
"get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer": (
self._qdq_activations_from_prev_layer_default
)
}
)
return selfwith _qdq_activations_from_prev_layer_default = True on GPTQCalibConfig and LocalHessianCalibConfig. That gets local-Hessian the default it wants without touching max/mse, and lets the four recipe edits above be reverted.
- If the global flip is intentional, make the description match the default and name the consequence, e.g.:
"If True (default), capture each layer's next-layer inputs after it is "
"calibrated, so QDQ error and in-place weight updates propagate forward — "
"required for GPTQ and Local-Hessian. If False, capture before calibration, "
"so the next layer sees the same FP activations as a non-layerwise pass; use "
"False for max/mse when layerwise results must match the non-layerwise pass."
Either way, note in the CHANGELOG.rst backward-breaking entry that max/mse layerwise calibration is no longer amax-equivalent to the non-layerwise pass by default — that is the part existing users are most likely to be caught by.
| quantize: | ||
| $import: preset |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
[IMPORTANT Compatibility] This recipe runs local-Hessian without layerwise calibration, contradicting the recommendation this same PR adds in three other places.
configs/ptq/presets/model/nvfp4_w4a4_weight_local_hessian.yaml (the imported preset) declares only:
algorithm:
method: local_hessian
fp8_scale_sweep: truewith no layerwise block, so LayerwiseConfig.enable stays at its False default. Meanwhile this PR adds to local_hessian_calibrate's docstring "We recommend using Local-Hessian with layerwise calibration enabled ("layerwise": {"enable": True}) and a calibration batch size of 1", the blog's own usage snippet sets "layerwise": {"enable": True}, and the model-specific models/Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B/ptq/nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_local_hessian.yaml sets enable: true. The GPTQ sibling general/ptq/nvfp4_default-kv_none-gptq.yaml also enables layerwise.
Why it matters. This is the shipped, model-agnostic entry point for the algorithm — it is the recipe ptq.md points readers at, and the one a user will reach for after reading the blog. As written it silently gives the non-recommended configuration, i.e. the accuracy the blog advertises is not what this recipe produces. The ptq.md row ("local Hessian + FP8 sweep") gives no hint that layerwise is off.
Suggested fix. Override the algorithm block here rather than editing the preset (the preset is also reached via the --qformat nvfp4_local_hessian alias path, where forcing layerwise would be a surprise):
quantize:
$import: preset
algorithm:
method: local_hessian
fp8_scale_sweep: true
layerwise:
enable: true$import merges inline keys over the imported mapping (_resolve_value in modelopt/torch/opt/config_loader.py), so the sibling algorithm: replaces the preset's wholesale — the same pattern the Qwen recipe uses. If layerwise is deliberately left off here (e.g. to keep this recipe usable on VLMs whose decoder layers layerwise_calibrate cannot locate), say so in a comment and in the ptq.md local_hessian bullet so the gap against the blog is explicit.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
🤖 Bot comment.
Good catch, fixed in 8fdf7352b. Rather than overriding the general recipe, I enabled layerwise calibration in the shared preset configs/ptq/presets/model/nvfp4_w4a4_weight_local_hessian.yaml, so the change reaches every consumer: the general/ptq/nvfp4_default-kv_none-local_hessian recipe, the exported mtq.NVFP4_W4A4_WEIGHT_LOCAL_HESSIAN_CFG, and --qformat nvfp4_w4a4_weight_local_hessian.
All three previously resolved to layerwise.enable=False, which was inconsistent with the layerwise configuration used in the blog and recommended by the Local-Hessian API documentation. We did not run an A/B comparison, so this is a configuration-consistency fix rather than an accuracy claim.
One consequence worth stating plainly: layerwise_calibrate raises when a model has no identifiable decoder layers or when forward_loop is None. Callers of the public config in those situations previously fell back silently to a non-layerwise pass and will now fail loudly. That tradeoff is called out in the PR description because the silent fallback masked this configuration mismatch.
I left checkpoint_dir out of the shared preset because it would hardcode an output path into every consumer, and left get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer implicit because it already defaults to True. The focused preset test landed with the fix; c832f1169 additionally covers both the --qformat mapping and the separately loaded exported public config.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
🤖 Bot comment.
Correction to my earlier reply: I have reverted that approach.
Enabling layerwise in the shared preset propagated into the exported mtq.NVFP4_W4A4_WEIGHT_LOCAL_HESSIAN_CFG, and that broke tests/gpu/torch/quantization/test_quantize_cuda.py::test_quantize[config13-SimpleLinear]: SimpleLinear is a plain nn.Sequential, so layerwise_calibrate raised ValueError: Could not find transformer layers in model. Chenjie caught this on the preset thread and was right; I reproduced the failure locally before reverting.
In 22f3f9e1b the preset is restored byte-identically and layerwise remains only in models/Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B/ptq/nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_local_hessian.yaml, which already had it—that is the recipe the blog's numbers come from. The shared preset, general recipe, exported config, and --qformat value therefore keep layerwise off and remain usable on models without identifiable decoder layers. Please disregard the "reaches every consumer" framing and the raise-instead-of-silent-fallback tradeoff in my earlier reply; both described the approach now withdrawn.
That leaves the original point open: general/ptq/nvfp4_default-kv_none-local_hessian again resolves to layerwise.enable=False, so the model-agnostic entry point still does not match the blog's recommendation. Fixing it in that recipe rather than the preset is the narrower option and avoids the public-config breakage; I am flagging that for a maintainer call rather than changing scope again unilaterally.
A test now pins both halves: layerwise on for the Qwen recipe, off for the preset, exported config, and --qformat mapping.

[SUGGESTION] This is a bare QuantizeConfig fragment (no metadata: block) living in a directory where every other file is a runnable PTQ recipe.
Consequences:
--recipe models/Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B/ptq/nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_maxfails —load_reciperequiresmetadata.recipe_type, and_peek_recipe_typereturnsNonehere. A user browsing the directory after reading the blog's max-vs-local-Hessian comparison will very reasonably try exactly that._all_shipped_ptq_recipe_paths()intests/unit/recipe/test_loader.pyskips it (it filters onmetadata.recipe_type == "ptq"), so nothing breaks in CI — but it also means this file gets none of thetest_load_recipe_all_builtins/test_shipped_ptq_recipe_algorithm_config_constructssmoke coverage the sibling recipe gets. Itsquant_cfgis only validated transitively through the local-Hessian recipe's$import.- That same test module's comment states the convention plainly: "Units/presets under
configs/are fragments, not standalone recipes." Every other sharedQuantizeConfigfragment in the tree lives undermodelopt_recipes/configs/.
Suggested fix: move it to modelopt_recipes/configs/ptq/presets/model/qwen3_8_27b_nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn.yaml (or a configs/ptq/units/ path if you prefer) and update the imports: base: reference in nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_local_hessian.yaml. Alternatively, if you want the max baseline to be directly runnable — which would be genuinely useful given the blog compares against it — give it metadata: {recipe_type: ptq} with the quant_cfg nested under quantize:, add a ptq.md row, and have the local-Hessian recipe $import the shared fragment instead of the recipe.

Claude review — CRITICAL: 0, IMPORTANT: 2, SUGGESTION: 2
Scope: full review (the trigger comment carried no scoping instructions). 19 files changed; reviewed all 3 modelopt/torch/quantization/ files, all 7 modelopt_recipes/ files, the tests/unit/recipe / test_config_validation.py deltas, CHANGELOG.rst, README.md, and the two docs .rst files. Did not open the two .png assets or announcements.css.
Worth noting up front: the PR title and body still describe this as a docs-only blog PR ("Documentation only; no code paths change"), but the diff now flips a calibration default in modelopt/torch/quantization/, deletes a config validator, adds two recipes, and rewrites config tests. Worth refreshing the description and the Testing section before this goes ready — a reviewer reading the body would not know to look at config.py.
Most impactful findings
1. [IMPORTANT] The get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer default flip goes against the in-tree evidence — modelopt/torch/quantization/config.py:725
Of the six shipped recipes with layerwise.enable: true, four needed get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer: false added in this PR; only GPTQ and local-Hessian want true. So the new global default is the wrong value for most in-tree layerwise users, and it drops the property those four rely on — that layerwise max/mse yields the same _amax as the non-layerwise pass, making layerwise.enable: true a pure memory optimization. After this change the same recipe with enable: true vs false produces different scales. The break is declared in CHANGELOG.rst, so it is not silent at the release-notes level; the question is the direction, and the inline comment sketches a ClassVar-based per-algorithm default that gets local-Hessian what it needs without moving max/mse. Separately, the field description is self-contradictory as written: line 729 says If True (default) while line 733 says We recommend setting this to True for GPTQ and Local-Hessian, leaving max/mse users no guidance for the value they now get by default.
2. [IMPORTANT] The new shipped local-Hessian recipe does not enable layerwise — modelopt_recipes/general/ptq/nvfp4_default-kv_none-local_hessian.yaml:26
It imports configs/ptq/presets/model/nvfp4_w4a4_weight_local_hessian, which declares only method: local_hessian + fp8_scale_sweep: true — no layerwise block, so enable stays False. Meanwhile this same PR adds "We recommend using Local-Hessian with layerwise calibration enabled" to local_hessian_calibrate's docstring, sets "layerwise": {"enable": True} in the blog's usage snippet, and sets enable: true in the Qwen3.8-27B recipe. The GPTQ sibling nvfp4_default-kv_none-gptq enables it too. This is the model-agnostic entry point ptq.md points readers at, so as written it ships the non-recommended configuration.
3. [SUGGESTION] models/Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B/ptq/nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_max.yaml is a bare QuantizeConfig fragment (no metadata:) in a directory that otherwise holds runnable recipes — not loadable via --recipe, skipped by _all_shipped_ptq_recipe_paths() so it gets no smoke coverage, and off-convention versus every other fragment under modelopt_recipes/configs/.
4. [SUGGESTION] _coerce_layerwise_input (config.py:788) exists to preserve model_fields_set via exclude_unset=True, and its comment says so — but with _gptq_qdq_default deleted, no validator reads self.layerwise.model_fields_set any more. The deleted test case comment ("_coerce_layerwise_input must preserve model_fields_set so the GPTQ default still kicks in") was the only thing pinning that contract, and the replacement test_qdq_default_respects_user_explicit_value now passes trivially for the LayerwiseConfig(enable=True) case because the expectation matches the new default. Either drop the now-unmotivated exclude_unset=True and its comment, or keep both and restore a test that actually exercises the preservation. (Moot if you take option 1 on finding 1, which reintroduces a model_fields_set consumer.)
Verified clean
- No unintended recipe regressions from the default flip. Walked all 23 recipes matching
layerwiseinmodelopt_recipes/: every one withenable: trueeither explicitly sets the flag now or is the GPTQ/local-Hessian recipe that wantstrue. The rest areenable: false, where the flag is unread. Nothing was missed. $importmerge semantics are correct fornvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_local_hessian.yaml._resolve_valueinmodelopt/torch/opt/config_loader.py:580-603merges the imported mapping then applies inline keys, so the siblingalgorithm:block fully replaces the base'salgorithm: maxrather than being dropped or deep-merged. TheQuantizeConfigschema declared by the base matches thequantize:field type.- Checkpoint restore is unaffected. The flag only steers calibration-time capture order; the serialized
LayerwiseConfigdump carries an explicit value, so existingmodelopt_stateround-trips unchanged. No mode registration, state schema, or export path is touched. - Blog math and numbers check out.
XX^Tas half the Hessian is consistent with the Frobenius-squared objective as stated — the earlier CodeRabbit finding about a missing1/Nno longer applies to the current text. The 126-candidate FP8 count is right (128 positive E4M3 codes, minus zero, minus NaN). All six "Average drop" figures in Tables 1 and 2 reproduce from the per-benchmark scores to the stated precision, and the per-column bold marks in Table 1 land on the actual column maxima. ptq.mdbookkeeping is consistent withtests/unit/recipe/test_recipe_docs.py: the count went 25 to 26 to match the addedgeneral/ptq/file, the new recipe stem is backticked in the table, andQwen/Qwen3.8-27Bappears in the model-specific section astest_every_model_specific_ptq_dir_is_mentionedrequires.- The blog's
--recipepath now resolves to a file that exists, closing open item 1 from the PR description.
Risk assessment
Moderate. The blog, CSS, and recipe additions are low risk. The risk is concentrated in the one-line default flip: it is a behavior change for every out-of-tree layerwise.enable: true config, and the fact that two-thirds of the in-tree layerwise recipes had to opt back out is a signal the default may be pointed the wrong way. Nothing here is a correctness bug — both IMPORTANT findings are design/consistency calls that want an explicit decision from the author rather than a mechanical fix.

The imported preset configs/ptq/presets/model/nvfp4_w4a4_weight_local_hessian declares only method: local_hessian + fp8_scale_sweep: true — no layerwise block — so LayerwiseConfig.enable stays False here. That contradicts three other places this PR adds: the local_hessian_calibrate docstring ("We recommend using Local-Hessian with layerwise calibration enabled"), the blog's usage snippet, and the Qwen3.8-27B recipe. The GPTQ sibling nvfp4_default-kv_none-gptq.yaml does enable it. Since this is the model-agnostic entry point ptq.md points readers at, please either override the algorithm block here with layerwise: {enable: true} (inline keys merge over $import, as the Qwen recipe does) or note the deliberate gap in ptq.md.

This propagates into mtq.NVFP4_W4A4_WEIGHT_LOCAL_HESSIAN_CFG, which tests/gpu/torch/quantization/test_quantize_cuda.py::test_quantize runs against SimpleLinear — a plain nn.Sequential with no registered decoder layers. wrapped_calib_func now takes the layerwise branch, and layerwise_calibrate raises ValueError("Could not find transformer layers in model...") before calibration; there is no fallback to the non-layerwise pass. That GPU case should start failing.
Either drop the exported constant from that parametrization (or override layerwise.enable: false there with a comment), or set layerwise in the consuming recipes rather than the shared preset so the public config keeps working on models without decoder layers.

You are right, and thank you—I reproduced it before changing anything: test_quantize[config13-SimpleLinear] failed with ValueError: Could not find transformer layers in model at model_calib.py:2089, exactly as you described. config13 is mtq.NVFP4_W4A4_WEIGHT_LOCAL_HESSIAN_CFG, and there is no fallback to the non-layerwise pass.
I took your second option: layerwise is set in the consuming recipe rather than the shared preset. In 22f3f9e1b the preset is restored byte-identically to its pre-change content, and layerwise remains only in models/Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B/ptq/nvfp4_w4a4_mlp_fp8_attn_local_hessian.yaml, which already carried it. The public config, --qformat nvfp4_w4a4_weight_local_hessian, and the general recipe therefore keep working on models without decoder layers, and that GPU case passes again.
I also added a regression test that pins both directions—layerwise on for the Qwen recipe, off for the preset, exported constant, and --qformat mapping—so re-adding it to the shared preset fails in unit tests rather than only on a GPU runner.
The tradeoff is that general/ptq/nvfp4_default-kv_none-local_hessian goes back to layerwise.enable=False, which reopens the point raised on the other thread. I am leaving that for a maintainer call rather than moving scope again.

### What does this PR do? Type of change: documentation Introduce AutoQuant KV as a general mixed-precision KV cache quantization feature. The blog explains isolated layer scoring and budget-constrained format selection with a diagram and compact equation, demonstrates the Python API and CLI, and shows how KV search follows GEMM AutoQuant. The scoring explanation makes explicit that GEMM formats and scales stay fixed in the reference and every trial. Deployment guidance recommends scoring on the intended GEMM configuration, covers BF16 and already-quantized KV-only use cases, and explains that NVFP4-K/FP8-V is excluded by the current export path rather than an accuracy comparison. A Qwen3-8B case study compares default-scale recipes against BF16 across seven benchmarks, including Native 6.25 and AutoQuant 5.33/5.76. At 5.76 effective bits, AutoQuant uses 64% less calculated KV payload than BF16 with a −1.04 percentage-point RULER-128K change. Every recipe difference is **result minus BF16**. Three vector SVG figures, the CSV, and evaluation settings accompany the article. The case study uses BF16 weights and a development runtime with asymmetric K/V candidates; the shipped starter example uses a different candidate menu. Payload savings are calculated, accuracy differences are point estimates, and unmatched controls are withheld. ### Usage No new API or flag. The article demonstrates `modelopt.torch.quantization.auto_quantize` and the shipped `general/auto_quantize/kv_fp8_nvfp4_cast_kl_div_at_5p4bits` recipe, plus the composed GEMM/KV recipe. ### Testing - Scoped pre-commit hooks and `git diff --check` passed. - Focused Sphinx HTML build passed with warnings treated as errors; all three SVG figures parsed successfully and contain no embedded raster images. - Verified seven BF16 scores and 40 recipe differences against 47 saved records, including response coverage and two withheld cells. - Statically checked Python example syntax and API keywords, nine CLI flags, and both recipe paths. Enumerated all 16 allocations in the illustrative diagram. - Confirmed the install pin `1d392999b45626f9c06ff0bc9797b03529fe24e3` is the merge commit for #2273, includes #2272, and is an ancestor of `main`. - Chrome checks passed at 1440 px and 390 px: figures and math render, the mobile table scrolls without page overflow, and the announcement filter works. No new GPU evaluation or full API documentation build was run. ### Before your PR is "*Ready for review*" - Is this change backward compatible?: ✅ Documentation only. - If you copied code from any other sources or added a new PIP dependency, did you follow guidance in `CONTRIBUTING.md`: N/A. Adds the Local-Hessian NVFP4 weight-scale announcement blog at
docs/source/announcements/local-hessian.rst, together with the calibrationdefault and the recipes needed to reproduce it.
Documentation
16x16localHessian, with numbered equations.
Four-over-six, plus composition with GPTQ.

renders above the equation. This anchors it to the right instead, and
shrinks the table-note class.
Calibration behavior (backward breaking)
layerwise.get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layernow defaults toTrueforall layerwise calibration, and the per-algorithm
GPTQCalibConfigvalidatorthat previously injected it is removed. Layerwise calibration exists
principally to serve GPTQ and Local-Hessian, whose error propagation depends
on prior-layer QDQ activations, so this is the behavior that matches what
enabling layerwise normally asks for. This is a design default, not an
empirical quality claim — no A/B data is offered for it.
max/mse/AWQ/SmoothQuantusers who never set the flag, so it is listed under Backward Breaking
Changes in
CHANGELOG.rst. Setlayerwise.get_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer=Falseto restore theprevious behavior.
max/mseis no longer amax-equivalent to thenon-layerwise pass by default, so
layerwise.enable: trueis no longer apure memory/time optimization for those algorithms.
max/mselayerwise recipes pinget_qdq_activations_from_prev_layer: falseexplicitly, asalgorithm-specific exceptions that want full-precision activations for
subsequent layers.
gptqandlocal_hessian_calibrateAPI docs now recommend layerwisecalibration with a calibration batch size of 1.
Where layerwise is enabled
Layerwise calibration is enabled in the Qwen3.8-27B local-Hessian recipe —
the recipe the blog's numbers come from — and only there. The shared preset
modelopt_recipes/configs/ptq/presets/model/nvfp4_w4a4_weight_local_hessian.yamldeliberately leaves layerwise off, and so do its consumers: the
general/ptq/nvfp4_default-kv_none-local_hessianrecipe, the exportedmtq.NVFP4_W4A4_WEIGHT_LOCAL_HESSIAN_CFG, and--qformat nvfp4_w4a4_weight_local_hessian. Layerwise calibration requires amodel with identifiable decoder layers, and those three are general-purpose
entry points that must keep working on models without them (a plain
nn.Sequential, say). Users who want layerwise on the public config can enableit explicitly via
"layerwise": {"enable": True}, as the snippet below shows.Recipes
