Linux support needs to be broken into subtasks, as Linux has no unified display management API. Some initial thoughts on subtasks:

    1. X11 (xrandr) - Most mature, covers legacy setups
    2. Wayland - wlroots compositors (Sway, river, etc.)
      • wlr-output-management-unstable-v1 protocol
    3. Wayland - Hyprland - wlroots-based but hyprctl IPC required for headless display creation
      • Large userbase, especially among Sunshine users
      • Well-documented, stable IPC
      • Headless display creation extremely easy. Hyprland also a common target for gamers.
    4. Wayland - KDE Plasma - kde-output-management-v2 protocol
    5. Wayland - GNOME/Mutter - DBus API (org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig)
    6. DRM/KMS - Headless/TTY scenarios

X11, Hyprland, and wlroots would likely cover the majority of Sunshine's Linux userbase.

I can share notes on setting up headless displays in Hyprland if anyone is seeking this.

While I don't have usage numbers, Bazzite offers both KDE and GNOME desktop environments. While sunshine currently works great, if this library is being implemented it would be great to see support for Bazzite's supported DE's prioritized.

Hi! Thanks a lot for all the developers' effort put into Sunshine and it's Linux support in particular, but let me disagree on this.

Gnome 50 released a week ago already dropped X11 from it's codebase. KDE Plasma is going the same way in six month according to the release schedule.

So, the two main DEs won't be able to run Sunshine to it's full glorious potential unfortunately. And while it still be usable for some people's headless "cloud-gaming" setups, it will be hard to use as a best vnc/rdesktop solution on the market. And therefore it's not realistically to say that X11 will be able to cover any significant amount of Linux userbase.

@dmchmk yes you're right I should have said X11, wlroots, KWin and Mutter, given changes coming down the pike.

Not sure how much the latter two compositors would differ from the wlroots implementation
