feat(telemetry-receiver): daily version trend (spec 022 FR-042) - #697
Conversation
Spec 022 FR-042 (T111-T113, T115, T116): two daily-count tables, daily_install_version and daily_version_change, written in the extended ingest transaction; semver ordering through golang.org/x/mod/semver (non-semver labels are unordered, OD-8); and extended.versionTrend in the views, with stale counted against the newest semver in the range, pre-releases included (OD-7, OD-10). New tests in versiontrend_test.go. Also renumber the Phase 11 tasks from T101-T110 to T111-T120: the amendment reused IDs already taken by Phase 9b. WalkthroughThe receiver now records and displays daily version trends for extended-reporting installs. The specification documents standalone and multicluster reporting, including schema 2 deployment metadata, environment aggregation, and behavior when managed clusters are unreachable. Rename the basic "Versions" card to "Reports by version" (OD-9), add the "Versions by install" card the template already renders, and add the "Version trend" card under it (FR-042): upgraded, downgraded and changed (unordered) panels on one shared scale, and stale installs on a scale of their own. New chart/series-3 (green) and chart/series-4 (amber) tokens pass the dataviz validator in both modes. Export of i0xK1E and variables.json in the same commit (rules 1, 2). Follow the T114 design: the basic chart is titled "Reports by version", and a "Version trend" card sits under "Versions by install". Its three change panels share one scale; stale installs get a full-width chart of their own, labelled with the newest release. "View as table" swaps the card for one Day/Upgraded/Downgraded/Changed (unordered)/Stale table. Column charts take a layout, so the trend panels render their axis text near 11px, and two new series classes (s3 green, s4 amber) come with light and dark tokens. No inline style or script (CSP). …dth (spec 022) The full-width "Versions by install" card stretched its 600-unit bar chart to the page width, so its labels rendered near 28px. It now draws a 1320-unit layout on wide screens. The stale panel of the version trend gains a panel-width layout for screens up to 720px, where the 1320-unit chart shrank its text to about 4px. CSS picks the layout, so the CSP-locked pages still need no JavaScript. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
Reports from a central or standalone panel count every managed cluster (OD-11), skip clusters that can't be reached and still go out on schedule (OD-12), and carry a cluster/standalone deployment marker in a new extended schema version (OD-13). Adds FR-043 to FR-045, US5 scenario 10, SC-018, research R23, plan slice 7 and Phase 12 tasks T121 to T127. OD-14 (older reports in the breakdown) and OD-15 (environment fields on a standalone panel) are open, so Phase 12 is blocked until they are ruled. ## Requirements *(mandatory)*
### Functional Requirements
- **FR-020**: The provider MUST keep **daily aggregates** (UTC) for at least 12 months, and they MUST survive provider restarts.
- **From basic data**, per day:
- reports accepted
- count per sanitized version
- server and template distributions by size band
- server and template totals
- **From extended data**, per day:
- unique active installs, and new installs
- per-category counts for each environment field
- installs and servers per official module, plus "custom"
- per-feature adoption counts
- the number of reports that included extended data
- active installs per reported version
- installs that upgraded, downgraded, or changed version without an order (FR-042)

# Feature Specification: Default telemetry destination, extended telemetry, and telemetry dashboard
## Requirements *(mandatory)*
### Functional Requirements
- **FR-042**: The provider MUST derive a daily version trend from extended reports only, because basic reports carry no install ID. For each day in the range it shows:
- **upgraded**: installs whose first non-duplicate report that day carries a semver version higher than their activity record's last version
- **downgraded**: the same, with a lower semver version
- **changed (unordered)**: installs whose version changed where either side isn't semver (OD-8)
- **stale**: installs active that day on a semver version lower than the newest release reported by any install in the range (OD-7). The newest release is the highest semver version seen, pre-releases included (OD-10). Installs on a version that isn't semver are never stale.
An install's first report (no activity record yet) is never a change. Versi...

493-493: 🗄️ Data Integrity & IntegrationThe concern is refuted for R23’s failure mode.
WatchClustersdoes not probe remote connectivity. A failed list call or rejected credential occurs after the client is published, and this watcher does not remove that client. It removes entries only for deletion events. A local kubeconfig or secret-loading failure can prevent initial publication, but that is distinct from R23’s failed-list-call case.
Booleans combine as any-cluster, tunnels as a union, and only counts are summed (FR-043, plan slice 7). R14's local-only counting scope is marked as superseded by R23 for schema 2. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>

Before: the dashboard's "Versions" panel counts reports, so one install on
pr617with 6 daily reports showed up as "pr617 6". Nothing showed installs upgrading, downgrading or falling behind over time. After: the basic panel is renamed "Reports by version". Under "Versions by install", a new "Version trend" card shows, for each day, how many installs upgraded, downgraded, changed between versions that can't be ordered (for example
pr617tov0.3.0), or stayed behind the newest version seen in the range. The view also has a table version.GET /api/v1/viewsreturns the same data asextended.versionTrend.This PR also writes the next amendment, standalone and multicluster reporting, into spec 022 (OD-11 to OD-16, FR-043 to FR-045, Phase 12). That work is built on its own branch after this PR merges.
How:
store.go: addsdaily_install_versionanddaily_version_changewithCREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS, so existing providers gain them on restart. It also adds both tables to the retention sweep.versionorder.go: addsclassifyChangeandisSemver, built ongolang.org/x/mod/semver. Labels that aren't semver are unordered (OD-8).ingest_ext.go: inside the extended-ingest transaction, a non-duplicate report counts toward its version for the day, and a change from the install's last version is counted by kind. A new install is never a change, and nothing is linked to an install ID (FR-014).views.go:queryVersionTrendreturns one entry per day of the range. Stale is measured against the highest semver in the range, pre-releases included (OD-7, OD-10).telemetry-dashboard.penplus export) and templates (T117): the trend has three change panels on one scale and Stale on its own scale. CSS picks a narrow chart layout on phones and a wide one for "Versions by install", so the CSP-locked pages still need no JavaScript.versiontrend_test.gocovers ordering, a two-day population (SC-017), the empty range and error wrapping.lifecycle_test.gonow also checks the two new tables in the retention sweep (user sign-off on 2026-10-15).telemetry-receiver/README.mdandspecs.md.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
