macOS (Intel, Monterey): splash, pane fold, Save greyed + thumbnail render error, Dock icons per helper, cluttered Build panel #344

Description

@ohlincha

Found 2026-10-15 testing the wip/test-912 build (x86_64 dmg) on macOS 12.7.

  1. Splash shows for less than a second. Expected about 3 s in front, as on Linux and Windows.
  2. Folding a Builder pane with its minimise button makes the pane float, instead of collapsing it to its caption.
  3. Save: Save stays greyed out in the Builder, and saving reports "VizRender error: unable to render scene graph" (VizRender::thumbnail), i.e. the offscreen thumbnail render fails on macOS.
  4. Dock: every ECCE helper process (Organizer, gateway, ...) shows its own Dock icon. Clicking one does nothing. Helpers should not appear in the Dock (LSUIElement / background activation policy), only ECCE.app.
  5. Build panel looks cluttered on macOS (screenshot to follow).
  6. File dialog (Add Structure from File) has no way to show other file types (no * filter). See Builder: use the native file dialog for files on this computer #342 for the native dialog.

Also seen: on first start "The machine you are running on, montereywifi, has just been added to your list of registered machines" (expected).

To check: whether Cmd+A and Cmd+S work; the tester tried Ctrl, which is not the Mac modifier.

    More from the merged build, 2026-10-15:

    • Downloads unreadable. Add Structure from File lists no files in ~/Downloads and reports "Cannot read /Users/andy/Downloads/em.gro". macOS protects Downloads, Desktop and Documents. ECCE.app's Info.plist has no NSDownloadsFolderUsageDescription / NSDocumentsFolderUsageDescription / NSDesktopFolderUsageDescription, and the helpers run as separate processes, so no permission prompt appears. Being confirmed with a copy in ~/ecce-test.
    • Preferences under 'organizer'. It appears in the app menu titled 'organizer'; it should be 'ECCE'. Same cause as the Dock icons: the helpers are separate apps.
    • Splash not seen at all in this build.

    Confirmed: the same em.gro copied to ~/ecce-test (not a protected folder) is listed and loads. The Downloads failure is macOS folder protection. Fix: add the folder usage descriptions to ECCE.app's Info.plist, and run the helpers inside ECCE.app, so macOS asks once and remembers.

    Status 2026-10-16 (test build 440744a on macOS 12.7, Intel):

    • OK: each tool is its own app with the ECCE icon and name, gateway not in the Dock, Cmd+Tab, Dock icon kept in the Dock starts ECCE; Builder Save with thumbnail, no VizRender error; pane fold collapses; splash visible.
    • Open:
      • ~/Downloads lists nothing and no prompt appears. The TCC log shows the responsible process is /bin/bash, because ECCE.app's executable is a shell script. Fix in progress: a compiled launcher as CFBundleExecutable that keeps the script as its child.
      • The Builder opens minimised / not in front. Probably because it is started by the background gateway, so the app is never activated. Fix in progress.

    Released in 9.2.0: tools as their own apps, gateway out of the Dock, thumbnails, pane folding, splash, and access to Downloads, Desktop and Documents through a compiled launcher. The TCC log now shows org.friendsofecce.ecce as the responsible process, and the prompt was requested.

    Kept open until checked by hand on a Mac:

    • the Downloads prompt (answer Allow, then Add Structure from File lists ~/Downloads);
    • a tool opened from the Organizer comes to the front, not minimised.

    Confirmed on macOS 12.7 (Intel), 2026-10-16: Downloads opens after the one-time prompt, em.gro from ~/Downloads loads, the Builder comes to the front. Shipped in 9.2.0.
