Change

local-agent-loop-profile - feat(local): agent loop self-host profile

Goal

Let one persistent local Compose project run the existing external checker service and get every operator prerequisite in place for agent work through the public contributor flow: a registered checker, service identities, a no-human-review project with an UNPAID contribution policy, and a live acceptance lifecycle.

Intent And Planning Context

  • Intent: self-host the local agent loop with supported operations only. Guide-rule setup (compilation that selects the checker) is decided separately and stays a marked placeholder.
  • Commitrail record: .commitrail/changes/local-agent-loop-profile.md

What Changed

  • docker-compose.agent-loop.yml: opt-in overlay (selected with COMPOSE_FILE), with three services:

    • checker-volumes-init: a root one-shot step that makes the volume roots 0700 and owned by LOCAL_UID:LOCAL_GID;
    • checker-registry: a loopback-only registry;
    • checker: the existing Rust service from docker/checker/Dockerfile.release, in docker-dev/runc mode, with no network, a read-only root, all capabilities dropped and the Docker socket mounted.

    Backend, worker and beat share two named volumes:

    • the material root, mounted at its Docker-daemon path /var/lib/docker/volumes/<project>-checker-material/_data and set as both WORKSTREAM_ARTIFACT_SCRATCH_ROOT and WORKSTREAM_EXTERNAL_CHECKER_MATERIAL_ROOT;
    • the socket volume, holding /run/ws-checker/checker.sock.
  • external_checkers/harnessy_proof/: a networkless proof-claim checker (checker.py, Dockerfile) and publish_local.py. The publish helper builds the image, pushes it to the loopback registry, resolves the platform-manifest digest, then writes the checker-service config and the PRE and POST ExternalCheckerRegistrySpec bodies.

  • backend/scripts/provision_local_service_actors.py: provisions 12 journey service identities through POST /api/v1/service-actors. It uses a stable Idempotency-Key per identity, a bounded Retry-After wait on 429, and sends the token only to loopback or HTTPS.

  • backend/scripts/transition_review_lifecycle.py: runs JointLifecycleController with the operator's own AUTH decision. It moves forward only (disabled -> shadow -> live), and a rerun is a no-op.

  • docs/engineering/local-agent-loop.md: the runbook. Also a link from local-pilot.md, roadmap entries, a .gitignore entry for generated config, and the lane catalogue entry with its fingerprint.

Why It Changed

docker-compose.yml had no checker service. The hosted composition assumes host paths and gVisor. Docker Desktop adds two constraints:

  • Host-shared paths refuse chmod on Unix sockets, and socket paths must stay within 107 bytes.
  • The checker's docker run --mount type=bind,src=<material> is resolved by the daemon, so the material path must be identical in every container and on the daemon.

Design Chosen

  • Overlay instead of editing the base file. Compose cannot add environment to a service conditionally by profile, and an empty socket setting fails settings validation.
  • Named volumes for socket and material. The material volume is mounted at its own daemon path.
  • One runtime UID throughout. The socket is 0600, and the service requires grant roots owned by the sandbox UID.
  • Socket group. The checker gets group_add GID 0, because Docker Desktop's socket is root:root 0660. The docs warn that this is root-equivalent access. On Linux, set WORKSTREAM_DOCKER_SOCKET_GID.
  • OPENSSL_armcap=0. It is already set in the backend dev image. The Rust service, the Docker CLI and the stdlib-only proof checker do not load PyCA's OpenSSL, so the overlay adds no further default.

Alternatives Rejected

  • A separate local checker Dockerfile: the release image runs under a user: override.
  • Host bind mounts for the socket or material: chmod is refused, and the paths differ from the daemon's.
  • A single bootstrap command that hides authority decisions.

Scope Control

Allowed Files Changed

  • The files listed above.

Files Outside Stated Scope

  • None. The base docker-compose.yml, backend runtime, checker-service source, lifecycle controller, authorization catalogue and migrations are unchanged.

Product Behavior

  • No Workstream product behavior changed. The overlay, image and scripts use existing owners and public APIs.

Evidence

Drill on Docker Desktop 27.5.1 (Apple Silicon, containerd image store):

  • Ran as a separate Compose project, ws-agentloop-test, with its own ports and fresh volumes.
  • The existing workstream-local-* containers stayed up and untouched.
  • The CLI was built from this branch.

Commands Run

docker compose --profile backend up --build --wait # plus checker-registry
python3 external_checkers/harnessy_proof/publish_local.py --registry localhost:25000 --compose-project ws-agentloop-test --sandbox-uid 501 --sandbox-gid 20 --out-dir .local-agent-loop
docker compose up --build --wait checker

docker compose exec -T backend python scripts/provision_local_service_actors.py --admin-subject local-access-admin
docker compose exec -T backend python scripts/transition_review_lifecycle.py --actor-profile-id $OPERATOR_ID --phase shadow|live

Acceptance Criteria Proof

  • The checker service starts healthy, and the backend adapter reaches it over the shared socket.
  • The proof image registers by platform-manifest digest and executes through the composed service.
  • The identity and lifecycle scripts run, are idempotent and are denied without the required authority.
  • UNPAID + human_review_required:false reaching FinalAcceptance: NOT verified. Guide activation readiness reports post_policy_unavailable. No task can exist until guide compilation selects the checker, and that is out of scope here. The public journey probe proved false-mode FinalAcceptance only with a compensated policy. Unpaid participation is covered only at module level (tests/reviews/acceptance/test_participation.py, not run here).

Test Delta

Tests Added

  • backend/tests/checkers/external/test_harnessy_proof_checker.py:
    • each claim rule;
    • unreadable or linked or oversized proof;
    • verdict exactly when an error finding exists;
    • results validated through ExternalCheckerExecutionResult.model_validate_json with request identity bound;
    • publish bodies valid as ExternalCheckerRegistrySpec;
    • overlay paths equal the publish helper's;
    • loopback registry guard.
  • backend/tests/test_local_pilot_scripts.py:
    • forward-only lifecycle path;
    • stable keys and classification;
    • 429 resend with the same key;
    • admin bearer URL guard.

Tests Modified

  • backend/tests/test_ci_lane_catalogue.py: shared-family fingerprint updated for one added module.

Tests Removed Or Skipped

  • None

Impact-Routed Reviewer Results

Reviewer Result Blocking findings Proof boundary and uncertainty
security PASS WITH LOW RISKS none All five low findings were fixed: caller-trust docs, admin bearer URL guard, exact loopback registry, O_NOFOLLOW/O_NONBLOCK proof open, and the compensated-acceptance warning. The socket is root-equivalent by design for a local profile only.
senior_engineering PASS WITH LOW RISKS none Fixed: stale-socket health (now a connect probe), partial lifecycle steps reported on failure, a token per request, a data-root check, and the copied-code sources named.
qa / test_delta PASS WITH LOW RISKS none Added: identity-field binding, the 429 resend test, the overlay-path test, and URL and registry guard cases. run, publish() and the exit codes are proven only by the drill.
documentation PASS WITH LOW RISKS none Fixed: four should-fix items (readiness overstatement, bootstrap conflict, guide wording, roadmap Next column) and five low items.

CI And Gate Integrity

  • No workflow weakening.
  • No lint/test/docstring gate weakening.
  • Tests protect meaningful behavior; coverage percentages are diagnostic only.
  • No package script weakening.
  • No unpinned new GitHub Action.
  • Checkout credential persistence disabled where checkout is used (no workflow change).

scripts/test_hosted_release_config.py and scripts/test_hosted_release_images.py could not run locally because they need the Docker/Compose CLI inside the test container. They cover unchanged hosted files, so hosted CI is the authority.

Remaining Risks

  • The checker has root-equivalent Docker daemon access through the socket. Use this profile only on a developer machine.
  • The proof checker trusts proof.json claims; it does not verify them against GitHub.
  • The material path assumes the default /var/lib/docker data root. The runbook checks DockerRootDir.
  • Not run: Intel Docker Desktop, native Linux, sleep/resume.

Follow-Up Work

  • Decide guide-rule setup that selects harnessy.work_proof for PRE and POST. Then run the UNPAID false-mode FinalAcceptance drill on the persistent stack.

Human Review Focus

Please inspect:

  • the Docker socket grant (group_add GID 0) and checker hardening in docker-compose.agent-loop.yml;
  • the daemon-path material volume and its data-root assumption;
  • the proof checker trust limit and the runbook wording around automatic FinalAcceptance.

Human Merge Ownership

  • I can explain what changed.
  • I can explain why it changed.
  • I know what could break.
  • I accept the remaining risks.
  • The user explicitly approved this specific PR for merge.

Add an opt-in Compose overlay that runs the existing checker service in
docker-dev/runc mode beside the local stack, with the material root on a
named volume mounted at its daemon path and the socket on a separate
named volume. Add a networkless Harnessy proof-claim checker image with
a host-side publish helper, scripts that provision service identities
through POST /api/v1/service-actors and move the joint review lifecycle
through its owner controller, and a runbook. Guide-rule selection stays a
placeholder step.

Report committed lifecycle steps on failure, issue a fresh admin token per
service-actor request and send it only to loopback HTTP or HTTPS, require
an exact loopback registry, open proof.json without following links,
probe the checker socket by connecting, and add --capability-version for
rebuilt images. Tests now bind result identity fields, resend on 429 and
compare the overlay paths with the publish helper. Runbook clarifies the
bootstrap, readiness, data-root check and trust limits.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Open proof.json non-blocking, document the admin API URL guard, rewrap a
runbook line and extend the URL and registry guard cases.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds an opt-in local agent-loop Compose stack, a proof-claim checker and image publisher, and operator scripts for service-actor provisioning and lifecycle transitions. The runbook documents setup and contributor steps. Guide-rule checker selection and persistent-stack FinalAcceptance remain incomplete.

Changes: Local agent-loop stack

Proof checker and image publication
external_checkers/harnessy_proof/*, backend/tests/checkers/external/test_harnessy_proof_checker.py, backend/scripts/test_lane_catalogue.py, backend/tests/test_ci_lane_catalogue.py
The checker validates proof schema, commit SHA, GitHub URLs, CI status, and merge status. It emits a hashed result and rejects missing, oversized, or linked proof files. The publisher creates the image and generates service and phase-specific registry specifications. Tests cover validation and result contracts.
Compose checker runtime
docker-compose.agent-loop.yml, backend/tests/checkers/external/test_harnessy_proof_checker.py
The opt-in overlay configures backend, worker, and beat to use shared checker material and socket volumes. It adds volume initialization, a loopback registry, and an isolated checker service. Tests check generated paths against the overlay.
Operator identity and lifecycle scripts
backend/scripts/provision_local_service_actors.py, backend/scripts/transition_review_lifecycle.py, backend/tests/test_local_pilot_scripts.py
The provisioning CLI uses deterministic subjects and idempotency keys, bounded rate-limit retries, and API URL validation. The lifecycle CLI supports forward transitions from disabled to shadow and live, with transactional controller updates. Tests cover helper behavior and invalid paths.
Local setup and contributor runbook
docs/engineering/local-agent-loop.md, docs/engineering/local-pilot.md
The runbook describes stack setup, checker publication and registration, identity provisioning, project and policy setup, lifecycle transitions, contributor steps, and cleanup. It states that checker selection, guide activation, and task creation are not covered.
Profile and roadmap status
.commitrail/changes/local-agent-loop-profile.md, .gitignore, docs/roadmap_status.md
The profile and roadmap record the stack scope, constraints, acceptance results, and remaining guide-selection and FinalAcceptance work. .local-agent-loop/ is ignored.

Docker socket mount gives the checker service root-equivalent control of the host daemon.

Any process that can reach /var/run/docker.sock can start a privileged container or mount host paths. The read_only, cap_drop, no-new-privileges and network_mode: none settings do not limit Docker API calls over the socket. On Docker Desktop, group_add with GID 0 also adds the process to the root group. The PR documents this as a remaining risk, and the overlay is opt-in for local use.

If the checker service must keep launching docker run, put a socket proxy in front of the daemon. The proxy should allow only the operations the checker needs, such as container create, start, wait, remove and image inspect. Alternatively, document that this overlay must never run on a shared or production host.

Review comment at @docker-compose.agent-loop.yml at line 97:
Remove the direct /var/run/docker.sock mount from the checker service and route
its Docker API access through a restrictive socket proxy permitting only the
required container and image operations; if direct access must remain for local
use, clearly document that this overlay is not suitable for shared or production
