[failproofai-legion-868] Stop Dependabot proposing the fixture fix SECURITY.md forbids - #870

Conversation
#838 and #867 were the same pull request, with the same three pins: `ai@4.3.19` -> `5.0.52`, `ai@5.0.263` -> `7.0.122`, `@mastra/core@0.24.9` -> `1.71.0`. Both were rejected for the same reason, which `SECURITY.md` had already written down before either arrived: a major bump in an integration fixture does not update the fixture, it deletes the release the fixture exists to hold and drops a supported version from the matrix silently. #867 also did not install — `@mastra/mcp@0.14.5` peers on `@mastra/core@">=0.20.1-0 <0.25.0-0"` — and because the shard's global setup installs every fixture before any test runs, one unresolvable fixture took down three CI shards whole. Nothing stopped a third. `.github/dependabot.yml` had no `npm` entry at all, so there was no `ignore` rule to hang on these directories. It gains one, covering `/sdk/typescript/integration/fixtures/*`, and it exists to switch things off: - `open-pull-requests-limit: 0` disables VERSION updates only. Security-update PRs are explicitly not subject to that limit and do not count toward it, so a transitive advisory fixable in place still opens one — the half worth keeping, and how `undici` in `ai-5` was caught in #869. - `ignore` drops `version-update:semver-major` for every dependency, which is the half that stops the recurrence. `directories` (not `directory`) because only the plural key globs. The cost is stated in the file rather than discovered later: an advisory whose only fix is a major on a pinned framework now opens no PR at all. That is already this repo's standing answer for that case — `SECURITY.md`'s fixture triage, case 2 — where the alert stays open and visible in the security tab with a row in the accepted table as the compensating control. Dependabot offering the forbidden fix was never what kept us informed; it cost two rejected PRs and a red CI run to learn nothing new. `SECURITY.md` now says so where the procedure is, so the config and the policy cannot drift apart silently. `__tests__/ci/fixture-dependabot-pins.test.ts` follows the pattern of the other `__tests__/ci` YAML tripwires. Every way this entry can rot is silent, so each is asserted, and each assertion was verified to actually fail by breaking the config on purpose: the limit raised above 0, the major-ignore dropped, the glob widened to `/sdk/typescript/**` (which would start version-bumping the SDK package itself, deliberately un-managed today), and a fixture landing at a path the glob does not cover. That last one is why fixture discovery walks the tree instead of one level and keys on `package-lock.json`: a one-level scan cannot see a deeper fixture at all, so it would pass by finding nothing, and the lockfile is what separates a fixture from `langchain-dup-core`'s vendored `lc-weather-provider`, which has a manifest and no lockfile. Verified: 375 test files / 7718 tests pass, lint clean (5 pre-existing warnings, none in changed files), and all 15 fixtures on disk are covered by the glob. This section still says that the fixtures have no Dependabot update entry and that only alerts will mention them. The new npm entry contradicts both statements: security-update PRs can also arrive. Update this section so maintainers have one consistent fixture-triage policy.

High: Major security-update PRs remain unsuppressed
- Rule:
COR-001 - Location:
.github/dependabot.yml:115 - Evidence: The entry sets
open-pull-requests-limit: 0at line 112, which the change correctly notes does not limit security updates. Its only attempted suppression isignore.update-types: version-update:semver-majorat line 115. Dependabot appliesupdate-typesonly to version updates; security updates are still raised. Therefore an advisory whose remediation movesaior@mastra/coreacross a major can still produce the same security PR this change says it prevents. The new test only verifies that the ineffective YAML key is present. - Required change: Use a security-update mechanism that actually applies to the affected pinned dependencies/advisories, or revise the policy and documentation to acknowledge that Dependabot security PRs cannot be filtered by update type. Validate the chosen approach against a major-only fixture advisory before relying on it.
…rity updates Both CodeRabbit findings on #870, and the second one invalidated this PR's central claim. **The ignore did not do what the PR said it did.** `update-types: ["version-update:semver-major"]` reads like "never bump a major here" and is silently inert against exactly the pull requests this entry exists to prevent. dependabot-core, `common/lib/dependabot/config/ignore_condition.rb`: def ignored_versions(dependency, security_updates_only) return versions if security_updates_only ... versions_by_type(dependency) + versions end On a security update only the explicit `versions:` list is consulted; `versions_by_type` — the only reader of `update_types` — is never reached, and an ignore with no `versions:` returns an empty list and blocks nothing. #838 and #867 both arrived as security PRs in the `npm_and_yarn` group, so the config as shipped would have stopped neither, while three documents claimed it had. `open-pull-requests-limit: 0` does not cover the gap either: security-update PRs are explicitly exempt from that limit. (Name matching is unaffected — `UpdateConfig#ignored_versions_for` selects conditions by wildcard on the dependency name before any of this, regardless of update kind, so `dependency-name: "*"` does apply.) Replaced with `versions: [">= 0"]`, dependabot's own ALL_VERSIONS constant. That ignores every version of every dependency in these directories, which sounds larger than it is: for these fixtures Dependabot can only ever propose moving a pin, because the frameworks pin their transitive deps EXACTLY — the same fact that makes an override the only lever in SECURITY.md's case 1, and why #837 found `npm update` reporting all five affected fixtures already up to date while the advisories stood against them. Its record here is two PRs, both the forbidden move, one of which did not install. Alerts are untouched. They come from the dependency graph, not this file, so they keep arriving and stay visible in the security tab — which is how every fixture advisory so far was actually found and fixed by hand, the five overrides in #837 and `undici` in `ai-5` in #869. Only the PRs stop. **The coverage test could not see a fixture nested inside a fixture.** The `else` recorded a parent with a lockfile and never descended, so a fixture at `ai-4/inner` — which `fixtures/*` does not cover either — was invisible and the assertion passed by finding nothing. Recurses either way now; verified it fails naming `ai-4/inner`. Both changelog and SECURITY.md paragraphs rewritten to describe the mechanism that actually works, including why the obvious spelling does not, so the next person does not reach for `update-types` again. Two new assertions pin it: one requires a `versions` range on the wildcard ignore, one fails any ignore that sets `update-types` without `versions`. Verified by reverting the config to the inert form — two tests fail. Verified: 375 files / 7719 tests pass, lint 0 errors (5 pre-existing warnings), and each guard confirmed to fail when its config is broken on purpose. The follow-up flagged in #869, now that the fixture advisories themselves are fixed and merged.
The problem
#838 and #867 were the same pull request, with the same three pins:
ai-4ai@4.3.19→5.0.52ai-5ai@5.0.263→7.0.122mastra-0@mastra/core@0.24.9→1.71.0Both were rejected for the reason
SECURITY.mdhad already written down before either arrived: a major bump in an integration fixture does not update the fixture, it deletes the release the fixture exists to hold and drops a supported version from the matrix silently. The major is in the directory name.#867 also did not install.
@mastra/mcp@0.14.5peers on@mastra/core@">=0.20.1-0 <0.25.0-0", sonpm cifailedERESOLVE— and because the shard's global setup installs every fixture before any test runs, one unresolvable fixture took downframeworks(node 20.x),frameworks(node 24.x) andruntimes(node 24.x) whole.Nothing stopped a third.
.github/dependabot.ymlhad nonpmentry at all.The change
One
npmentry covering/sdk/typescript/integration/fixtures/*:directories, notdirectory— only the plural key globs. Why the obvious spelling fails
Both keys are needed, and neither is what you'd reach for first:
open-pull-requests-limit: 0stops version updates. Security-update PRs are explicitly exempt from that limit, so it alone would have stopped neither [sdk/typescript] Keepai-4andmastra-0on their pinned framework majors #838 nor chore(deps): bump the npm_and_yarn group across 2 directories with 2 updates #867 — both arrived as security PRs in thenpm_and_yarngroup.update-types: ["version-update:semver-major"]reads like the right way to forbid a major bump and is silently inert against those same PRs. Fromdependabot-core:versions_by_typeis the only reader ofupdate_types, and the first line returns before it. On a security update only the explicitversions:list is consulted, and an ignore without one returns an empty array.versions: [">= 0"]— dependabot's ownALL_VERSIONSconstant — is the one key that path honors.(The wildcard name match is fine either way:
UpdateConfig#ignored_versions_forselects conditions bywildcard_match?on the name before any of this, regardless of update kind.)Why ignoring every version is narrower than it sounds
For these fixtures Dependabot can only ever propose moving a pin. The pinned frameworks pin their transitive deps exactly —
ai@4.3.19requiresjsondiffpatch@0.6.0, not^0.6.0— which is the same fact that makes anoverridesentry the only lever inSECURITY.md's case 1, and why #837 foundnpm updatereporting all five affected fixtures already up to date while the advisories stood against them. There is no in-range fix for it to offer. Its record here is two PRs, both the forbidden move, one of which took down three shards.Alerts are untouched. They come from the dependency graph, not this file, so they keep arriving and stay visible in the security tab — which is how every fixture advisory so far was actually found and fixed by hand: the five overrides in #837,
undiciinai-5in #869. Only the PRs stop.I considered per-fixture version ceilings instead (
ai-4→ignore ai >= 5,langchain-0.3→>= 0.4, …), which would keep a theoretical in-range security PR channel open. I didn't, because that channel has produced nothing in three attempts and the config cost is ~45 hand-maintained ignore entries across 15 directories. Happy to build it if you'd rather have the finer grain. The test
__tests__/ci/fixture-dependabot-pins.test.ts, following the other__tests__/ciYAML tripwires. Every way this entry can rot is silent, so each is asserted — and each assertion was verified to fail by breaking the config on purpose, not merely to pass as written:open-pull-requests-limitraised to 5update-typesalone/sdk/typescript/**fixtures/group/deepfixtures/ai-4/innerThe last row was CodeRabbit's other finding: my first walk stopped at any directory with a lockfile, so a fixture nested inside a fixture was invisible and the assertion passed by finding nothing — the precise failure mode the test exists to prevent. Discovery now recurses unconditionally and keys on
package-lock.json, which is also what separates a real fixture fromlangchain-dup-core/vendor/lc-weather-provider(manifest, no lockfile).Worth recording that my first attempt at that negative testing was itself broken — the mutation regex hit the explanatory comment instead of the YAML key, so the suite passed and briefly looked like the guards were inert. Same class of mistake as the alias in #869 and the
update-typesignore here: a check that looks right and matches the wrong thing.Verification
