744-751: Keep the native alert when the foreground poll completes a rest after a background period.Suppose the user backgrounds the app and the deadline passes. The Android alarm posts the notification. The user then resumes the app. At that point
didChangeAppLifecycleStatecalls_updateRestTimer, which calls_skipRest(completed: true)while the lifecycle state isresumed. BecauseinForegroundis true, Line 751 callscancel(), andRestAlertReceiver.cancelremoves the delivered notification. This may be intended, because the user is now looking at the app. The opposite case is not handled. Suppose the user returns before the deadline, then_restWasBackgroundedis reset and foreground completion runs as normal. No defect is established, so this comment only records the behavior.

🌐 Web query:
official Android documentation POST_NOTIFICATIONS denied request permission again shouldShowRequestPermissionRationale target 33
💡 Result:
For an app **targeting API 33 or higher** on Android 13+, the official docs say you control when to request `POST_NOTIFICATIONS`. After denial, you may request it again; check `shouldShowRequestPermissionRationale()` first. If it returns `true`, show an explanation before requesting again. ([developer.android.com](https://developer.android.com/develop/ui/compose/notifications/notification-permission?authuser=50&utm_source=openai))
A `false` result **doesn’t by itself prove** the user permanently denied permission: it can also occur before the first request. Android’s general permission guidance says to proceed with the request when no rationale is needed; the notification-specific docs don’t spell out every `shouldShowRequestPermissionRationale()` result after repeated denials. ([developer.android.com](https://developer.android.com/training/permissions/requesting?authuser=0&utm_source=openai))
Important distinction: the notification docs’ “not prompted again until uninstall/reinstall or target Android 13+” rule applies to apps **targeting API 32 or lower**—updating the target to 33+ restores control over request timing. ([developer.android.com](https://developer.android.com/develop/ui/compose/notifications/notification-permission?authuser=7&utm_source=openai))

Avoid repeated notification permission requests after denial.
_scheduleRestAlert calls RestAlertService.schedule, which requests permission before each rest alert. After a denial, MainActivity calls requestPermissions again because it checks only the granted state. Android may show another dialog on a later rest, or return the denial immediately without showing a dialog.
Persist whether the app has requested POST_NOTIFICATIONS. Request it when the flag is clear. After a denial, use shouldShowRequestPermissionRationale and an explicit retry flow. Do not request automatically on every rest start. This preserves the first request and a user-initiated rationale retry while avoiding repeated immediate denial callbacks. POST_NOTIFICATIONS applies to Android 13+, not Android 11+.

When a workout rest period ends, RepForge alerts the user with a notification, optional sound, and vibration. The countdown uses a deadline so it catches up after the app resumes. Skipping or adjusting rest cancels or reschedules the pending alarm. Profile provides separate controls for the alert, sound, and vibration.
The branch includes the current main changes: all 44 offline exercise animations, the full Exercise guide page, and the reviewed screenshot baselines. CHANGELOG.md now has an authored 2.1.8 section covering exercise animations, curated photo guides, and rest alerts. The existing automatic patch bump will advance 2.1.7 to 2.1.8 on merge and can extract that version's release notes.
Validation: the rest-alert implementation passed all eight CI checks, including 1,289 Flutter tests, Android debug builds, release shrinking, and 89.39% patch coverage. The changelog update passes the Python validation and extraction checks for 2.1.8; all three Python tests and 12 app changelog parser tests pass. A scratch run of the actual version-bump script confirms the next target is 2.1.8 and has complete release notes. CI reruns automatically for the final notes update.
Android asks for notification permission when the first rest alert is scheduled. On Android 12+ devices without exact alarm access, a background notification may arrive after the displayed deadline; the foreground countdown remains accurate.
