This release adds dynamic Gemini model discovery, changelog-driven upgrade notes, update notices, complete backups, and the workout-load/personal-record fixes from #67, #68 and #69.

  • Gemini discovers stable Flash/Flash-Lite models through a paginated API, with a shared strict regex and generation-method filter. Other model types and preview variants are excluded; the saved model is never silently changed.
  • Root CHANGELOG.md is the single source for app notes and GitHub Release bodies. Notes are backfilled from 2.0.1 onward, parsed using the documented format, cached separately from update checks, and shown for every skipped version between the previous and installed versions. CI validates the format and release builds require the exact target entry.
  • Shared release/category accordions keep long notes readable in the upgrade sheet and Profile release history. Debug suffixes are normalized only for installed/stored versions; published preview tags remain excluded. Update badges use published stable releases rather than future changelog entries.
  • Backups validate the complete payload before merging and preserve chats, attachments, settings, programs, personal records and workout-load metadata across Hive and SQLite. Partial backups are accepted and refresh failures are distinguished from import failures.
  • Explicit external/assisted/weighted load conventions, bodyweight snapshots and compatible-history filtering protect recommendations and charts. Handle-aware, encoding-aware personal-record identities and SQLite migrations preserve existing records.
  • Shared plain-language Gemini failures explain access, usage limits, busy servers and network interruptions. Coach retry preserves the original message, attachment and history without duplicate user turns, and is disabled after tool actions. Chat-save failures recover loading state; deleting the active chat clears retry state; adjacent user turns are combined for Gemini.
  • PR builds publish a separately installable RepForge (Debug) APK and verify its package ID and label. The artifact action is pinned to a verified commit.

Validation: all 1,242 Flutter tests and 3 release-script tests pass. Exact 2.1.6 release-note extraction passes. No new analyzer findings; 11 existing plugin/style/import findings remain. All actionable inline review threads are resolved. Final GitHub CI passed, including debug APK identity verification and release shrinking.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 90d5e

The incremental changes to AI failure messages, retries and release checks look sound. Two minor concerns from earlier reviews remain open: backup import validation and weight handling in set progression. These are narrow and unlikely to cause serious harm, but should be addressed or accepted before merge.

workout-logger/lib/screens/profile_screen.dart:305-309
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pre-check uses an unchecked cast and rejects valid backups that contain only new sections.

jsonDecode(jsonString) as Map<String, dynamic> throws a TypeError for non-object input. The catch block then shows a generic message. Also, the check requires sessions or routines. decodeBackup accepts backups that contain only trainingPrograms, personalRecords, conversations, or settings. The screen rejects those backups as invalid before the import runs. Remove this duplicate check and let provider.importData validate the payload. Read the counts from the decoded map after the import.

🐛 Proposed fix
-      final data = jsonDecode(jsonString) as Map<String, dynamic>;
-      if (!data.containsKey('sessions') && !data.containsKey('routines')) {
-        if (mounted) _showSnack('Invalid backup file.', AppColors.error);
-        return;
-      }
+      final decoded = jsonDecode(jsonString);
+      final data = decoded is Map<String, dynamic>
+          ? decoded
+          : const <String, dynamic>{};

1037-1047: The set literal does not deduplicate model entries by ID.

The {...} set compares whole (id, label) records. _refreshModels can already add (model, 'model (selected)'). In that case _models.any is true and no second entry is added, so duplicates do not occur on that path. However, discovery deduplicates by ID only in its map, while kGeminiModels and the discovered list are not merged. A duplicate ID with a different label could still reach the dropdown, and DropdownButtonFormField asserts on duplicate values. The current inputs do not produce this state. No action is needed.

workout-logger/lib/screens/widgets/release_widgets.dart (1)

150-171: The update notice shows "Check for updates" while the check is still loading.

Before the future completes, release is null. The tile then reads "Check for updates" with an active tap, and a tap starts a refresh. This state recovers when the future completes and has no other effect. The visual inconsistency is minor.

100-101: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The directory claim is incorrect. The workflow runs from the repository root, and build_release_notes.py reads Path('CHANGELOG.md'), which resolves to the root changelog.

The workflow does intentionally require a changelog entry for each bumped release version. A missing entry causes the validation step to fail before the release proceeds. This is an enforced release precondition, not a defect.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

allRecords is O(n²), and the getter runs inside getRecord.

Each record scans all cached values. getRecord calls allRecords, and getRecord runs for coach tools and for each PR card. The record count is small, so the cost is acceptable for now. Consider computing the filtered list once per cache mutation.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Cast of the decoded body can still throw on a non-object response.

jsonDecode(response.body) as Map<String, dynamic> throws a TypeError if the body is a JSON array or scalar. data['nextPageToken'] as String? at Line 73 has the same risk. The settings screen catches all exceptions and shows the generic refresh error, so the failure is safe. Throwing a FormatException would make the failure mode consistent with the new models validation.

♻️ Proposed change
-      final data = jsonDecode(response.body) as Map<String, dynamic>;
+      final data = jsonDecode(response.body);
+      if (data is! Map) {
+        throw const FormatException('Invalid Gemini model response.');
+      }

645-647: 🩺 Stability & Availability

No unhandled repository caller exists.

streamCoachReply errors now throw, but both production consumers catch them. streamChatReply has no repository call sites; its remaining references are declarations or test doubles. No actionable unhandled-exception path is established.

workout-logger/lib/viewmodels/routine_optimizer_view_model.dart-159-162 (1)

159-162: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Failure message is persisted as a model chat message and is replayed as model history.

The coach view model keeps failures out of history. The optimizer still appends the failure text as a model message. The next _buildHistory call sends that text to Gemini as a previous model turn. This conflicts with the PR objective that failure notices stay out of history.

Expose a transient failure field, as AiCoachViewModel does, or filter these messages from _buildHistory.

Review comments at @workout-logger/lib/screens/ai_coach_screen.dart:
- Around line 137-150: Update AiCoachViewModel.deleteConversation to call
_clearFailure() when the deleted id matches activeConversationId, clearing the
stale failure and retry state while leaving failures untouched when deleting an
inactive conversation.

Review comments at @workout-logger/lib/services/ai/ai_failure.dart:
- Around line 32-39: Update the busy-response condition in AiFailure.from to
keep statusCode == 503 and the “high demand” and “overloaded” text fallbacks,
but remove the “unavailable” text match so model-unavailable responses without a
status code are not classified as retryable busy failures.
- Around line 9-13: Update the access-error condition in AiFailure.from so
text-based matching applies only when statusCode is null; preserve explicit 401
and 403 handling. Replace broad text checks with the specific permission_denied,
unauthenticated, api key not valid, and api key not configured phrases, so
retryable status codes are not overridden by unrelated message text.

Review comments at @workout-logger/lib/services/ai/gemini_ai_service.dart:
- Around line 676-681: Update the FormatException handler in the Gemini response
parsing flow to capture the exception and stack trace and log both with
debugPrint before throwing the existing generic AiFailure; preserve the
user-facing failure message.

Review comments at @workout-logger/lib/viewmodels/ai_coach_view_model.dart:
- Around line 231-235: Move the _conversations.appendMessage persistence call
into the try/finally flow that manages the request, so a saveConversation
failure still reaches cleanup and resets _loading. Preserve the existing
retry-state updates and request behavior.
- Around line 264-274: Update GeminiAiService.streamCoachReply to coalesce the
new user content with the final history entry when that entry has the user role,
appending userParts to its parts; otherwise add a new user entry. Preserve the
existing behavior of keeping failure messages out of coach history.
