Summary

Keep explicitly supplied root flags when a subcommand omits the same option. For example, forgelm --dry-run purge now keeps dry_run=True.

Fixes #414

Resolves: CR-A05-001

Changes

  • Set argparse.SUPPRESS on the eight duplicated optional flags.
  • Cover flags before and after the subcommand, omitted defaults and subcommand precedence using parse_args only. The tests never execute purge.
  • Add the changelog entry and document the parser budget increase from 1372 to 1375 LOC; the new defaults and ruff wrapping exceed the previous budget by three lines.

Testing

Linux verification ran the full canonical gauntlet on Ubuntu with Python 3.11 and CPU torch, including site tests, dry-run, typing and every repository guard. Ruff formatting was checked without rewriting files; mypy used a minimal environment, following the existing CI approach.

At b1e2704: 5,893 passed, 22 skipped, with the rest of the gauntlet green. On Windows, the final CLI/subcommand/module-size suites passed all 148 tests. Against the old parser, eight new before-subcommand cases fail.

An earlier Windows full-suite attempt reported 5,531 passed, 74 failed and 104 skipped, including symlink privilege failures (WinError 1314). The final full-suite verification above is on Linux.

  • pytest tests/ passes
  • ruff check . passes
  • ruff format --check . passes
  • New tests added for changed code
  • python -m forgelm --config config_template.yaml --dry-run works
(the python -m form is deliberate: a console script's sys.path[0] is
its own bin/ directory, so plain forgelm … validates whatever is
installed in site-packages rather than your working tree)

Checklist

  • My code follows the project's style (ruff formatted) and docs/standards/coding.md
  • I've updated documentation if needed — and its Turkish mirror (-tr.md, or the tr/ tree for user manuals) in the same PR
  • I've added tests for new functionality
  • No new dependencies added (or added as optional: pip install forgelm[...])
  • Config template (config_template.yaml) updated if new config fields added
  • CHANGELOG entry under [Unreleased] if a user or library consumer can observe the change

No new CLI flags or config fields. Existing user documentation already describes the intended behavior, so no EN/TR or config-template changes were needed.

Summary by Sourcery

Preserve root-level CLI flag values across subcommands without changing their existing defaults or override behavior.

Bug Fixes:

  • Preserve explicitly supplied root CLI values for shared flags when subcommands omit those options, while retaining subcommand precedence and omitted defaults.

Tests:

  • Add parser coverage for shared flags before and after subcommands, omitted defaults, and subcommand overrides.

Chores:

  • Update the changelog and parser module-size budget for the CLI changes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Top-level --dry-run, --config, --offline, and --output options are now preserved when a subcommand omits the corresponding option. Explicit subcommand values still take precedence.

Suppress omitted subparser defaults so explicit safety flags and paths survive parsing. Cover both flag positions, omitted defaults and subcommand precedence.

Reviewer's Guide

This PR fixes argparse namespace clobbering by suppressing defaults for duplicated subcommand flags, preserving explicitly supplied root options while retaining expected omission defaults and subcommand precedence. Parser-only regression tests cover all affected flags in both positions, and the changelog and module-size budget document the change.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Prevent subcommand parser defaults from overwriting explicitly supplied root-level shared flags.
  • Set duplicated subcommand options to argparse.SUPPRESS so absent subcommand values leave the root namespace unchanged.
  • Retain normal defaults when a flag is omitted and allow an explicitly provided subcommand value to override the root value.
  • Apply the fix to dry-run, config, offline, and output options across the affected subcommands.
forgelm/cli/_parser.py
Add parser-only regression coverage for shared flag precedence and defaults.
  • Test each affected flag both before and after its subcommand.
  • Verify omitted flags retain expected defaults.
  • Verify subcommand values take precedence over root values without executing command handlers.
tests/test_cli.py
Document the user-visible fix and account for the parser's increased module-size budget.
  • Add the fix to the Unreleased changelog.
  • Increase the parser budget by three lines and record the rationale in budget history.

📝 Walkthrough

Selected subcommand flags now use suppressed defaults when omitted, preserving matching top-level values. Tests cover explicit values before and after subcommands, omitted flags, and subcommand --output precedence. The changelog and module-size budget also reflect the change.

Changes: CLI flag preservation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preserve root values when subcommand flags are omitted
forgelm/cli/_parser.py, tests/test_cli.py, CHANGELOG.md, tools/check_module_size.py
Selected subcommand flags use argparse.SUPPRESS when omitted. Tests check flag ordering, omitted values, and quickstart --output precedence. The changelog and parser size budget record the change.

Priority: ⬆️ High

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: High

Suggested reviewers: cemililik

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 26b62

Users consulting either CLI reference will not learn that a root value is preserved when a subcommand omits the duplicate option, or that an explicit subcommand value takes precedence. Add that clarification to both references to complete the stated documentation requirement.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 26b62

The change preserves explicitly requested options without adding permissions or new operations. No weakened control was identified, but the safety-sensitive command behavior and incomplete broader verification warrant a low-risk assessment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Preserved output values reach existing file-generation and cache-directory consumers. The same operator-selected paths were already reachable through explicit subcommand options; inspection found no new identity transition or additional filesystem authority. External privilege and tenant topology were not supplied.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Preserved purge configuration supplies existing warning and retention-reporting context rather than deletion authority. Row and run target selection retain their existing validation, and policy mode remains read-only. Preserved doctor offline is passed to the existing check runner.

Explanation

Issue #414 requires preservation of root values for duplicated --dry-run, --config, --offline, and --output options, plus a regression test. The parser uses argparse.SUPPRESS for all eight affected subcommand declarations. The added TestSharedSubcommandFlags tests all eight options before and after subcommands, omitted defaults, and subcommand output precedence. The change resolves CR-A05-001. The issue's English and Turkish documentation criterion is non-coding and does not affect this coding assessment.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The parser changes, regression tests, changelog entry, and parser module-size budget update directly support issue #414. The tests validate parser behavior without executing destructive commands, which is appropriate for this regression. No unrelated change is established by the available evidence.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes all required sections, explains the change, references issue #414, identifies the bug-fix type, documents testing, and completes the checklist. The documentation checkbox is left unchecked but the description explains why no documentation change was needed.

Hey - I've reviewed your changes and they look great!

Sourcery assessment

Needs a human reviewer. A root-level --config can now reach purge when the subcommand omits its own value, potentially selecting a retention policy that deletes data. Reverting the parser change would not restore anything already deleted.

Thank you so much for this contribution, and for following the SUPPRESS precedent and the "parse only, never run purge" guidance so carefully. This is a clean, well-scoped fix. 🙏

What I verified (on a throwaway checkout of the PR head):

  • All 8 flags named in the issue are covered. A scan of root/subcommand dest collisions finds none left unprotected (8 on development, 0 on this branch).
  • The new tests really guard the behaviour: the 8 "before-subcommand" cases fail against the old parser, and the remaining cases pass on both.
  • --help output is byte-identical to development for the root parser and the six affected subcommands, and exit codes are unchanged.
  • End to end: forgelm --dry-run purge … now leaves the corpus intact, forgelm --offline doctor uses the local cache instead of probing the Hub, forgelm --config … purge --check-policy surfaces the config-load error, and forgelm --dry-run --output … quickstart … honours both root flags.
  • Full suite passes locally (5817 passed, 98 skipped), and ruff plus the relevant repository guards (CLI help consistency, exit-code prose, module size, import origin, …) are green.
  • The CHANGELOG entry sits under [Unreleased] → Fixed with the finding ID, and Fixes #414 / Resolves: CR-A05-001 are in place.

One small, optional nit: the module-size history entry says "+3", but _parser.py grew by 5 code lines (1370 → 1375). The budget moved by 3 only because 2 lines of headroom were left. Feel free to reword it slightly, or leave it as is; it isn't blocking.

The CI workflow is still waiting for a maintainer to approve it (standard for a first contribution), and we'll take care of that on our side. Approving from my side. Thanks again, this is great work!
