We are pleased to announce AnduinOS 2.0.4, available now for AMD64 PCs and compatible ARM64 UEFI systems.
This release makes installation and recovery more approachable. A new Rescue Center helps you work with an installed system that cannot start, an optional GRUB theme brings AnduinOS branding to the boot menu, and a redesigned installation screen makes progress and diagnostics easier to follow. It also fixes problems reported by users and found through testing on real computers and USB media.
Recovery Even When the Desktop Will Not Start
The new AnduinOS Rescue Center is available from the Live desktop. Boot from the new installation media, select an installed AnduinOS system, and open a dedicated recovery workspace.
From there, you can browse and export files, reset an account password, inspect system information, and restore compatible Btrfs System snapshots. Before restoring a snapshot, the tool enables a safety snapshot of the current System by default. Your separate Home subvolume is left untouched by a System restore.
For supported offline UEFI installations, Guided Boot Repair diagnoses boot files and performs repair with visible progress and expandable command output. Advanced users can open an Emergency Terminal inside the selected offline system. The standard Btrfs Home subvolume is mounted at
/home; on Ext4, the normal Home directory is available through the mounted root filesystem.Recovery has clear limits. Encrypted filesystems are not supported by this release. Guided boot repair requires the EFI partition to be on the same disk as the selected installation; BIOS, separate
/boot, and cross-disk EFI arrangements need manual diagnosis. Custom separate Home partitions also need manual mounting. After a boot repair, restart the computer to confirm that it can boot normally.A New Look Before the Desktop
AnduinOS 2.0.4 introduces the optional HyperFluent GRUB theme, with AnduinOS artwork, menu icons, and a clear selection frame. New installation media includes the theme, and installed systems can use the same appearance for their boot menu.
Existing users can install it with:
The theme is a standalone package that can be removed independently. It changes the boot menu's appearance while keeping the existing boot commands and recovery entries.
Control Panel now offers three boot-display choices: High resolution (if available), Automatic, and Large text mode. High resolution tries the display's preferred mode and falls back when firmware cannot provide it. Large text mode favors lower resolutions for readability. These settings help accommodate different displays, although the available early-boot resolutions still depend on the computer's firmware.
A Clearer Installation Experience
The installation progress page has been redesigned around a full presentation view, with refreshed backgrounds, illustrations, and text. Slides advance automatically, and you can also browse them yourself while installation continues.
The current status and overall progress remain visible below the presentation. An Output button opens a dedicated view of the installation steps and live command logs. If installation fails, this view opens automatically. When installation succeeds, the page shows the completion result and restart action.
Save Log now uses the desktop's native file chooser, making it easier to keep diagnostics wherever you need them. The installer also includes a localized Help menu with an About dialog and direct links to the project and support pages.
We have improved installation on small displays, including 800×600 screens that may be encountered before graphics drivers are available. Large page banners collapse when space is limited, content can scroll, and navigation remains reachable throughout the installer.
Firmware detection now advances automatically after a successful check. The Secure Boot recommendation is skipped when Secure Boot is already enabled or unsupported, while failed detection keeps its diagnostic information and retry action. Keyboard-layout and variant searches now filter their lists correctly.
More Reliable Installation Media and Updates
The Live boot now checks the installation medium and reports progress or a recoverable error. Before making partition changes, the installer verifies its source image again. If that verification fails or cannot be completed, installation is blocked; you can still use the Live desktop to investigate the medium.
This release also fixes a Rufus ISO-mode boot problem that could leave some users at a login prompt instead of a usable Live desktop. The fix is included in newly built 2.0.4 media; updating an installed system does not change an older USB installer.
Other reliability improvements include:
update-initramfscommand and deferred package triggers, allowing kernel configuration to finish before boot images are generated. On Dracut systems, Ubuntu's Dracut package supplies that command.Desktop Icons for New Installations
Following reports of desktop icons jumping between monitors, new installations use Desktop Icons NG v85, based on GTK 3, in place of the newer GTK 4 implementation.
Existing GTK 4 users are not automatically switched by a normal upgrade. If you would like to try the GTK 3 edition, install:
APT replaces the conflicting system package. Log out and back in after switching. If you installed a separate user copy of Desktop Icons NG, remove or move that copy aside so the system package can take effect.
Multi-monitor reports remain under investigation. We welcome feedback comparing the two editions on the same computer and display arrangement, including scaling settings and whether the session uses Wayland or X11.
Getting AnduinOS 2.0.4
Download the new AMD64 or ARM64 installation media from the AnduinOS website. Checksum files and Torrents are available alongside the downloads. ARM64 requires a compatible UEFI system; the Legacy BIOS installation path is available on AMD64.
Existing AnduinOS 2 users can receive applicable updates through the normal APT workflow:
Use the new 2.0.4 media to access the updated Live environment, Rescue Center, and installation workflow.
For the complete list of changes and limitations, see the AnduinOS 2.0.4 release notes.
Thank you to everyone who reported problems, tested upgrades and installation media, and helped improve translations. Your feedback helped us turn real installation and recovery failures into practical improvements in this release.
